there have been two seasons of life on mars already, the writers made the decision not to go ahead with a third season because they didn't think it was fair on the fans, they learnt from the mistakes made by the LOST team.
John Simm never wanted to do a third season and i also heard that he turned down the role of the doctor.
i guess he just doesn't like doing long term projects, can't say i blame him.

OOps yes i mean the 3rd series......which isn't happening

i guess the role in Dr who will take up a month or two of his year, and leave room for other roles.

Thats what it needed; it needed money spent on the creatures etc to keep with likes of sci fi telly from the states, using CGI etc.
The character had to become more modern in look, as did his 'assistant'. Rose was a big move away from the type of ones he had in the past and they gave her a back ground story and the adventures were told by her perspective, which added mystery to the character of the Doctor. Also the relationship between them had to be more grown up, which Russell T Davies was good at by introducing to the show.

As much as i love Catherine Tate, i thought that she was absolutely awful in that xmas ep, Freema's gonna be in 3 eps of the second season of Torchwood and kylie will be in this year's xmas special. let's hope that they can come up with a better storyline than the runaway bride bollocks.
Also , could somebody please tell Stephen Moffat that he isn't as clever as he thinks he is and whatever happens please keep him away from Torchwood , he has already ruined that jekyll show.

i haven't watched any of the jekyll programme, as it is a updated version and i just wanted to see a film of the original text.

Hopefully, with the Donna character, it won't be so soppy like it was with Rose & Martha, give the doctor more of a person to knock heads with, as he is better when he is unpredictable.

tbh this show could have been great were it not for this said writer, who has been working on dr who since it came back . The guy nicks his ideas from Joss whedon and tries to pass them off as his own.
I am a huge whedon fan but we only need one of him , people should start thinking for themselves.

I have a Dr. Who problem. The first series I saw was the one with Tom Baker, it was when I was young and impressionable. It's the only one they showed over here for years and years. Now every other Doctor seems like a fraud. Also, Tom Baker in any other guise is upsetting.

hallo ms. clippers.

i feel exactly the same way about dr. who and tom baker. having said that, he did present a kids' tv programme, in the u.k. (early 1980s), called "the book tower" which was quite good. it had a (possibly unintentionally) scary theme tune and he always seemed quite sinister, in it.

I have grown up with the programme, for me the 1st doctor was Jon Pertwee. But mostly i remember Tom Baker when i was very small. The clever idea of the story is that he can change bodies or "regenerate". But if you look at it, there were three other actors who played the character before TB and also Peter Cushing was in the two movies made in the 60s (who played him just like the 1st Doctor anyway). Plus my Mum tells me that William Hartnell was the best Doctor! It's kind of like looking at the actors who played James Bond over the past 40 years, asking "who is the best one", which is a matter of opinion.

Filming is underway for Series Four of Doctor Who, with Catherine Tate reprising her role as Donna, the runaway bride featured in last year's Christmas Special.

The start of the new series will see Donna tracking down the Time Lord during an alien emergency in modern-day London. The couple are destined to experience a series of wonderful adventures throughout the new series including meeting one of Doctor Who's most popular aliens, The Ood in a brand new episode, Planet of The Ood.

Catherine Tate said: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

Donna and The Doctor will also be travelling through time for an encounter with the legendary murder mystery novelist, Agatha Christie, played by Jekyll star Fenella Woolgar. Fenella will be joined by The Good Life actress Felicity Kendal, who will star as Lady Clemency Eddison.

"What a brilliant idea that Agatha Christie and Doctor Who should meet!," noted Matthew Prichard, Agatha Christie's grandson. "Two characters whose contribution to British entertainment is absolutely unrivalled. As far as I know my grandmother, Agatha Christie, never saw Doctor Who, but I am sure she would have been intrigued, excited and above all flattered by all this attention in 2007."

Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer, Russell T Davies comments: "Visiting Agatha Christie has been on my wish-list for ages now, and for the Doctor, it's a real meeting of minds! Viewers can expect many more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

Blackadder and Notting Hill Actor Tim McInnerny will also guest star later in the series.

Freema Agyeman who has played Martha Jones, The Doctor's companion throughout the critically acclaimed third series will return to the show to join The Doctor and Donna mid series.

They plan to make an Ancient Rome-themed episode for Doctor Who’s fourth series there later this year.

But on Thursday night a huge blaze ripped through the studio — destroying masses of expensive BBC equipment.

Fifty firefighters battled the 40-foot flames all night — but by the time the fire was contained a third of the studio was destroyed.

An insider said: “It was a huge blaze. At one point, it looked like the whole studio was a goner. It threw a real spanner in the works for the Doctor Who team.

“They’re planning an episode where the Doctor goes back in time to Ancient Rome and thought it would be perfect to use the set.

“Filming on Rome has finished so it wasn’t being used.”

Rome was a huge critical hit for BBC2 and won plaudits for its extravagant special effects.

The £50million production used five acres of outdoor sets to recreate the ancient city.

Who bosses still plan to use the set once fire damage has been cleared up, with insiders suggesting crucial parts were still intact.

Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner said: “Some of the production team have been looking at locations in Italy for the new series.

“The Doctor will have a Roman adventure.”

Meanwhile, TV Biz can reveal that show star David Tennant is set to take a starring role in a stage version of Hamlet.

The Royal Shakespeare Company is set to announce next month that the actor will play the Danish prince in 2008.

Taking the role is likely to mean David is forced to quit Doctor Who before the end of series four — as we predicted.

The next actor to play DOCTOR WHO on the hit British sci-fi show has been found - TV star HARRY LLOYD.

The show's boss Russell T Davies was impressed with Lloyd when the actor appeared on a recent episode as a student at a posh school.

And when current Doctor Who David Tennant leaves the series, which is rumoured to be in two year's time (09), Davies is convinced he has found a ready made replacement.

He says, "After his audition I sent a note to the casting director saying, 'He's not just good for Baines (his character), that's the next Doctor. Seriously. He's so brilliant."

Lloyd currently plays Will Scarlett in the British TV series Robin Hood.

Doctor Who to return for fifth series in 2010.

After months of media speculation, the BBC can confirm that the BAFTA award-winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in Spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007.

Series Four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in Spring 2008, followed by a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009 Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.

The full-length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010."

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."

Following the critically acclaimed season three finale, the BBC has announced that Catherine Tate is set to return to the TARDIS for the complete 13-week run of series four, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special.

Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of Martha Jones in series three, is also set to return mid series four.

there have been two seasons of life on mars already, the writers made the decision not to go ahead with a third season because they didn't think it was fair on the fans, they learnt from the mistakes made by the LOST team.
John Simm never wanted to do a third season and i also heard that he turned down the role of the doctor.
i guess he just doesn't like doing long term projects, can't say i blame him.

they are currently filming a spin off to life on mars called ashes to ashes which is all about gene hunt (should be great)

Ten-inch on Top Gear
http://i8.tinypic.com/8aauzvo.jpg
Doctor Who star David Tennant has swapped his time-travelling Tardis for a less speedy mode of travel.

Actor Tennant has exchanged criss-crossing the universe for racing around a track as the latest star to take part in Top Gear's celebrity speed contest, Star In A Reasonably Priced Car.

The 36-year-old, seen here with the show's star, the mysterious racing driver known as The Stig, was challenged to race around the track in a Chevrolet Lacetti on the BBC show in the fastest time possible.

But will he be faster than his former co-star, 24-year-old Billie Piper who completed the task in an impressive one minute 48 seconds?

The results will be revealed in the show which is broadcast Sunday on BBC2 at 8pm.

Tennant blames Tate for "quitting" rumours

Tennant, speaking at the launch of the Christmas episode, said: "Catherine Tate stitched me up good and proper."

"I started getting all these phone calls on Saturday lunchtime saying apparently you're leaving Doctor Who," Tennant told the BBC. "Catherine Tate's just announced it on Radio 2 - thanks Catherine!"

He added: "I said to her on Monday morning did you know you've caused a minor diplomatic incident? She was completely oblivious that the phone had been ringing off the hook."

"I'm doing four more specials and beyond that no one's asked me to make any decisions and I'm quite happy to be enigmatic for as long as possible," he said.

The audience included Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain who told the BBC afterwards: "It was absolutely awesome. Millions are going to be glued to their TV sets."

Doctor Who writer and executive producer Russell T Davies said: "I'm delighted with the next series, we're doing stuff we've never done before and it's bigger and better than before."

He said Kylie Minogue was keen to do more acting again.

"She did this because I think that's the way her thoughts are heading. She's missed it and fancied that discipline. I'd cast her again like that," he said.

Asked by a child in the audience whether evil Dalek creator Davros would be resurrected for the new series, Davies said: "I don't know. I'm as in the dark as you are. Would you like us to?"

Amid much laughter, he stroked his chin and added: "I'll see what I can do."

It is on sci-fi at some hour on some day but I would like to see the reruns to catch up on some of the lore of the series. Here in the US with some shows you can catch an entire season repeated over the course of a month such as Seinfeld, ER, Scrubs or Friends. They do not do that here with Dr Who.

The Titanic/Poseidon adventure homage was a bit naff. It was actually like the Poseidon adventure in that the over weight person dies an heroic death. They must pull their socks up to keep the viewers if this is the type of story they are filming. As a friend pointed out to me, it always has killer androids in a mask:rolleyes:

And I'm getting bored of the Doctor falling in love with every assistant.

The Doctor: Well I think it's marvelous.
Romana: So do I. But it's not quite as you described it.
The Doctor: Really? How did I describe it?

The Doctor: It's the only place in the Universe where one can relax entirely.
Romana: Hmm... That bouquet!
The Doctor: What Paris has, - it has an ethos... a life... It has...
Romana: A bouquet?
The Doctor: A spirit all of its own. Like a wine, it has a...
Romana: A bouquet.
The Doctor: It has a bouquet. Yeah. Like a good wine. You have to chose one of the vintage years, of course.
Romana: What year is this?
The Doctor: Oh, well... well, it's 1979, actually. More of a table wine, shall we say? Ha! A randomizer is a useful device, but it lacks true discrimination. Shall we sip it and see?
Romana: Oh, I'd be delighted. Should we take the lift or fly?
The Doctor: Let's not be ostentatious.
Romana: All right, let's fly, then.
The Doctor: [decisively] That would look silly. We'll take the lift, come on.

This is a lot of fun. With great chemist between Tom baker and Lalla Ward. As the two time lords try to stop the Court (Julian Glover) from traveling back in time, which would stop the evolution of life on earth. Lots of running around Paris for the Doctor, as it was the 1st locution shooting outside the UK for this one. The usual dodgy looking models and alien masks, but all so well written, that for me it doesn't matter. Douglas Adams was the script editor and co writer, it has a lot of humour to the dialogue.

More excited than i can put in words:

The eagerly awaited fourth series of Doctor Who, starring David Tennant as the Timelord, arrives on BBC One this spring.

It has been confirmed that comedian Catherine Tate will reprise her role as Donna the runaway bride from 2006’s Christmas special for the complete 13-week run of series four, while Billie Piper will also appear once again as Rose Tyler in selected episodes. Freema Agyeman, who played Martha Jones, the Doctor's assistant throughout the critically acclaimed third series, will also return to the show to join The Doctor and Donna mid-series.

Two episode titles have just been announced. Episode one, written by Russell T Davies, will be called Partners In Crime, whilst episode four has been named The Sontaran Strategem. It's the first of a two-parter by Helen Raynor.

although i dont like the way they call it the fourth series - its about the 47th series isnt it?

http://www.heatworld.com/img/upload/500x400/1000035511.jpg

contains spoilers

heat went to the big Doctor Who launch last night, and we saw the first two epsisoes and we have to say, contrary to the thoughts of some of the show's geekiest fans, Catherine Tate is brilliant in it, adding a whole new layer of humour, humanity and down-to-earth gutsiness to proceedings. The whole event was as exciting as ever, with those new episodes screened in full, plus thrilling trailer for the rest of the series AND a questions-and-answer session afterwards with David Tennant, his new companion Catherine Tate and writer/exec producer Russell T Davies. The first ep (previewed in the current issue of heat) is a fab re-introduction to Tate's character who first appeared in the Christmas special two years ago. The scene in which they first clap eyes on each other is priceless. But the second episode is a classic – set in Pompeii, the day before Vesuvius is due to erupt and it's one of the most spectacular Who stories ever. As well as being funny and moving. Oh, and Tate gets even better, showing she can cry with the best of 'em. As for the rest of the series, we got a glimpse of Billie Piper toting a big weapon. Doesn't get much better than that. We also asked Russell T Davies about the controversial new early timeslot of 6.20pm, which we feel doesn't give us enough time to get back from the shops on a Saturday, and he made his displeasure clear, but also said the BBC had indictaed to him that, midway through the 13-part series, Who will get its old, later slot back. Yay! Don't miss the first episode this Saturday, BBC1, 6.20pm.

I liked this episode, as it was quite like the old series from the 70s. I mean there was lots of running around at a factory and gunfights, like they had with U.NI.T.

I'm rewatching Doomsday (cause for some odd reason I actually MISS Rose. D: which is odd, because I adore Martha and Donna is just...beyond awesome in my eyes.) and oh god, I remember how much I LOVE the Daleks and the Cyberman talking to each other.

It's like little kids battling over who gets to play in the sandbox. It just goes on and on and on and on.

I can't wait for tonights episode though!!!

It wasn't very good :(
I'd say more however it will spoil the urm plot or lack of it.
Next week's looks okay but similar to the one with Queen Victoria.

Last weeks was rubbish, this weeks not much better. Disappointed really.
Everything just seems so ropey, I know that can be a bit of the charm but naaa not happy with these two at all.

holycrapholycrap.

I think this does blow my dad's theory of "this isn't the real Rose, it's the TARDIS trying to warn the Doctor."
which, kinda made sense, cause of Rose looking into the time Vortex, and Rose would be the obvious choice to shape in, as the Doctor loved her, and would prolly listen to her...but still.

me neither. I don't think he's 'loosing it' (maybe I just hope he's not!) Dr Who has always been a bit hit and miss, and I guess a lot of the best ones feature the well known old favourites (cybermen, darleks etc) I wondered if it was to do with the cast. They wern't very convincing at being scared, other than the possessed woman and David T, it lacked tension. It sounds like a great, frightening concept, maybe it just didn't translate that well.

Next week looks fab, I'm at a BBQ, have to watch the repeat! Rose is back (which is good) and...I NEVER thought I'd say it, but...Donna is great, I missed her this week. :o

edit: I mean, were they short of moneyfor the casting? They seem to have grabbed has beens from eastenders and her from holby city in a god awful wig!
