Nice thread Deano

That red 'n' black stripped shirt worn by Franny is just fantastic. Classic away strip. What did we have this year, some black shit strip.
Any chance of a pic of Niall Quinn? (in his disco pants!) :)

PS Kewpie - you have permission to delete any of the no doubt daft responses on this thread to come from the many football fans so jealous that they are not from the Sky Blue three quarters of Manchester ;) :D:cool:

There's more to life than football!

But I'm sad the season's over too...I'm very excited about next season.

The only other sports I like are snooker and tennis, so I guess there's always Wimbledon in a bit, but I get a bit bored by it sometimes.

SPL Champions Celtic will travel to Switzerland, England and America to take part in seven pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2007/2008 campaign.

Yeah, a lot of games. When you don't have the income of the EPL, money must be found from other sources to try and compete financially.

Gordon Strachan’s men face Swiss sides FC Basel (Thursday, July 5) and Young Boys of Berne (Saturday, July 7) as part of a five-day trip to Berne, Switzerland.

After returning home to Scotland, Celtic will then travel down south to play Peterborough (Friday, July 13) and Queen's Park Rangers (Sunday, July 15).

Following those fixtures, the squad will fly to America, where the MLS All-Stars (Thursday, July 19) and Chicago Fire (Sunday, July 22) will provide the opposition in Denver and Chicago.

The Hoops’ pre-season schedule then takes them back to England for a glamour friendly with Newcastle United (Thursday, July 26) at St James’ Park.

Celtic’s pre-season fixture schedule:

Thursday, July 5, 2007 – FC Basel v Celtic
(Grenchen Stadium, 8pm kick-off)

Saturday, July 7, 2007 – Young Boys of Berne v Celtic
(Grenchen Stadium, 7.30pm KO)

Friday, July 13, 2007 – Peterborough United v Celtic
(London Road Stadium, 7.45pm KO)

Sunday, July 15, 2007 – Queen's Park Rangers v Celtic
(Loftus Road, 3pm KO)

Thursday, July 19, 2007 – MLS All-Stars v Celtic
(Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Denver, 7pm KO)

Sunday, July 22, 2007 – Chicago Fire v Celtic FC
(Toyota Park, Bridgeview IL, 2pm KO)

Thursday, July 26, 2007 – Newcastle United v Celtic FC
(St James’ Park, 7.45pm KO)

Me and our kid are off to visit my old haunts in the Berner Oberland in a couple of weeks time, shame I didn't know Celtic are over there, I'd have been up for that.

All the City players have been given a questionnaire by the police investigating the joey barton incident.
Any that don't return them are threatened with a trip to the station.

We've no manager.
No new players to score those goals we need.
Some dodgy bloke is trying to buy the club with dodgy money that he might not even have any more.
Ray Ranson is thought to have secured the right to revive his offer if the Thai deal fails. But do we want Ranson?

The whole thing is a bloody circus. And if you want proof drive past the ground.

But even this is better than being a Manure fan.

That's 'Leg End' :D

This is getting serious now - how long before someone comes along and takes Weaver and Ball off us as they are out of contract.
Reminds me of 1995 when Horton was stupidly sacked. Franny Lee promised a top 6 Euro manager and two weeks before the season starts wheels in his pal Alan Ball, who took us down 9 months later.

The board have made us once again into a laughing stock by entertaining Frank Shinawatra. I'd rather have Frank Sidebottom.....:o

Why do we always shoot ourselves in the foot? Mind you, if Samaris shoot himself no doubt he would miss....:D

I hope it's not true.

Lennon was a product of City's youth team, played one Divvy 1 game (when it was Divvy 1) at Birmingham aged 16 or 17 then stupidly sold to Crewe.

So his lawyer tells us today that the deal is still on.

Apparantly Thaksin put the money to buy the club "in 5 accounts in his children's names" before his accounts were frozen.

But he adds that if the deal does not go ahead then it will be the fault of The Assets Examination Committee in Thailand who froze his accounts. A contradiction which doesn't make sense to me.

Personally I don't mind if Peter Swales comes back from the dead and forms a partnership with Owen Oyston, so long as Mark Hughes doesn't get the job.

I am starting to develop a bit of a thing for Man City. I love Manchester as it is so homely. I hate Man Utd so I am glad to see they have had such a shoddy start to this campaign and so if I am choosing a Manchester side it would undoubtedly by City over United. I used to be a Leeds Utd fan but they just became incredibly depressing and I just lost interest. I am currently without a club to support so I would love to get back in but I don't know if I could quite ever get the same sort of passion for City as I had for Leeds back in the good old european days of the late 90s and early 00's. Good on Man City for beating Man Utd on Sunday !

I think it's down to me that Man City are doing so well as I've started working there, I think I'm a good luck charm. Which is a bad thing maybe, because I've just got a job at Man United today. I have a soft spot for Manchester City aswell and feel much more proud working for them. If I wasn't so cash strapped I wouldn't consider working for Manchester United, but I'm desperate. Man City is definitely the better place to work though, and their fans are alot nicer (and bigger tippers too!)

Who hasn't used the dead grandmother excuse?

to recap a plot that could happily lend itself to a Shakespeare comedy, the Manchester City player (it had to be, didn't it?) asked to be excused from the Republic of Ireland squad for the match against the Czech Republic because his maternal grandmother, who had looked after him since he was five, had just died. The Football Association of Ireland laid on a private plane for him to return home. When journalists discovered his maternal grandmother was alive, Ireland got out his spade and dug himself in deeper - this time claiming it was his paternal grandmother, whom he wasn't so close to, who had died, and if he had known he would have played.

Not surprisingly, his paternal grandmother wasn't best pleased. So Ireland had another go - this time saying it was his divorced grandfather's partner who had died. Whopper No3.

Now he claims that he only lied to protect his girlfriend who had just had a miscarriage. But nothing quite rings true any more. Surely, it would have been enough to get him out of the match to have simply told the Irish FA he didn't want to play against the Czech Republic because his girlfriend needed his support after losing their baby.

If we can't trust him on his granny, what can we trust him on? Has he really got a girlfriend? Is his name really Stephen Ireland? (Stephen Ireland playing for Ireland - surely one coincidence too many for this international man of mystery.) Tell one porky and everything begins to unravel. Even his hair weave.

As for the future, what if he drops out of a match claiming injury or bereavement? Will his manager make him swear on his granny's life. Will that set the whole thing in motion again? So many questions, so few straight answers.

Ireland is just upholding the tradition of rubbish footballing liars. We're not talking bung and nightclub beatings here, just honest-to-badness fibbing. When Anton Ferdinand told West Ham he needed to visit his sick granny (amazing how often grannies pop up in footballers' lies) in the Isle of Wight and flew off to South Carolina for an all night booze up, he forgot that a) he was famous; b) friends are not to be trusted, let alone hangers-on and strangers; and c) mobile phones have cameras.

In 2006, Iain Dowie quit as Crystal Palace's manager saying he wanted to move closer to his wife and family in Bolton. Days later he was appointed manager of Charlton, just down the road from Palace. All of which led to a law suit and Dowie being found to have "misrepresented" matters and ordered to pay £400,000 in legal fees.

Last year Youri Djorkaeff told club officials at New York Red Bulls that he had to return to France to attend to a serious family matter. Serious family matter? Kind of. TV cameras caught him celebrating France's World Cup quarter-final win over Brazil (albeit in Germany).

My favourite footballing fibber is Mohammed Sissoko, now of Liverpool. When he told Valencia he couldn't play for his club because his country Mali needed him, he forgot that managers can check up by referring to fixture lists or even making a quick call to the Malian FA. He returned home, and told his boss that Mali had won 1-0 and he'd been pulled off after 48 minutes. Actually the match never took place.

So some friendly advice to footballing liars: 1) make sure your lie is feasible - being taken off in a non-existent match is not feasible; 2) try to have an alibi - photos of sick gran in Isle of Wight are preferable to a snap from the Knock Knock nightclub in South Carolina, Anton; 3) keep your lie low-key and simple - one dead granny is definitely better than two; 4) ask yourself if your lie is so outrageous that it would make a great story if exposed and if the answer is yes don't tell it; and 5) best of all, don't lie.

As Mark Twain said, when in doubt, tell the truth.
problems for many people.

“I would like to apologise to my grandmothers and all my family for any distress I have caused them.

“Ireland manager Stephen Staunton, my Ireland team-mates, the backroom staff and the FAI also deserve my profound apologies. I truly appreciate that the extraordinary lengths they went to put my welfare first and ensure I got home from Slovakia as quickly as possible.

“I am also sorry for causing Manchester City any embarrassment and apologise to the supporters of both Manchester City and Ireland for misleading them and the media.

“I love playing for my country and am grateful for the understanding Mr Staunton and the FAI have shown to me since I told them the truth.

“I have learnt a valuable lesson from this mess and hope those I have hurt by my actions will forgive me.”

Well on the whole it is a mixture now as over the decades people have moved all over the show, but places like Salford / Stretford are traditional red strongholds due to their proximity to old trafford, whilst Moss Side / Fallowfield / Rusholme are Blue areas due to where Maine Road was situated. Then there are pockets of areas, I used to live in Sale which on the whole was just about a red majority, but an estate in the Ashton-on-Mersey area of Sale (The Racecourse Estate) was a big Blue area as it was a Moss Side overspill.
My mum was from Moss Side and everyone was shipped out to the new garden village of Wythenshawe after WW2, so again it was seen as a Blue area, but now very much mixed.
Gorton / Abbey Hey was seen as a big Blue area as the original St Marks FC was from Gorton and the club played in the Gorton / Ardwick area before Maine Road.

Of course, there are other red hotspots such as London, Dublin, Norway, Malta and Singapore too, hence the chant by City fans to united fans
'You're the pride of Singapore':D

My grandad (on my mums side) told me (when I asked him, when I was aged about 7, why we supported City) that it was because we were protestants. Hence united's traditional support coming from the Catholics - and the Irish immigrants who settled in at Manchester with jobs at the docks on the Ship Canal surrounding Salford and Stretford (including Morrissey's old man). Thankfully the religious divide is not around today and it's not a big deal at all. My best mate Jim is a City fan and born Catholic. Interestingly, I have the biography on Bert Trautman the legendary German POW who signed for City after WW2. Manchester's Jewish community were up in arms and it was stated that the Jewish football leanings were always towards City as faced with the choice between the Proddies or the Catholics, the Proddies were seen as 'the lesser of the two evils'!

To be fair, Sunderland were the better team tonight and deserved their 1-0 win and had a goal disallowed with 3 minutes to go which didn't go down well with their players (well done the linesman!) so City won 2-1 on aggregate... bring on Chelski / Villa (1-1 in the 1st leg at Chelski).

Cole actually had a good one season with us, he was top scorer despite only playing half a season. His departure left a nasty taste in the mouth, don't blame him for allegedly doubling his salary, but he did bugger all at Pompey.

Yes, he wants to turn his back on playing against Arsenal, Liverpool, man u, Chelski etc to play against the likes of the mighty St Mirren, Hamilton Academicals, Gretna (oh, they've gone bust after the 'crack' borders team attracted huge attendances of under 1,000) and Inverness Caledonian Thistle four times a season.

He obviously recalls his successful spell in the Dutch league, another Mickey Mouse league in which he scored for fun against poor opposition - mind you, at least the Dutch league is a 3 horse race......

Manchester City has bowed to pressure from SPL side Celtic and relented to the poultry offer of £1million for striker Georgios Samaras.:)

From 16 appearances for Celtic he has only scored five goals. £1M seem a fair price to me. Why did you guys buy him for £6M?

PS Want to get your excuses in before Aug 6th?

For exactly the same reason as you bought him for £1m. Money.
We have it, so the price goes up when buying.
You don't have it, so the price goes down when selling.

I once had the pleasure of spending a long weekend there. My wifes sister took her daughter, who was very young at the time, and the father. We paid for an upgrade and spent a few days with them. The longest 3 days of my life! We had to witness their relationship fall apart, whilst trying to keep a sense of normality for my neice. It was painful.

It was the first weekend of the season, and I seem to remember that there was plenty of options to watch the box in different themed bars all selling exactly the same shite lager and keg bitter. I did a lot of standing in bars "with" my sister-in-laws fella, who just kept sneaking off to phone his bit on the side. Everytime he cameback in he said that he had to phone work. It must be all go being a Carpet Salesman?

Hope you enjoyed yourself!!!!

JJ gave me an early day warning that the City match would be shown on Sultana, so I went to the guest services to find out if any of their bars had sultana, I was informed of hotshots, so I went to check hotshots who told me it's the front room bar that has it, so on Thursday night I went in to the front room bar & asked them if they had sultana & would they be showing the match, I was told yep they had & yes they would. So I settled back with a pint of creamy-flow brown liquid (this was 6pm). 6.45 I went back to the bar (after watching the same loop of $ky sports news to boredom), I asked when will sultana be on? They told me they'd programmed it to come on at 6.55pm, I ordered another soap brown liquid (pint of) & settled down again! 6.55 the programme switched to sultana, load of ads etc then the match starts up, woo, then 7.05pm the blue screen with the air turning that colour too, apparently it was a 5min free-view, the buggers hadn't renewed their subscription & none of the bods on could authorise it ffs! I took the wee lad out to the closest 2 boozers & neither had sultana, so it was back to Butlitz & a couple of britains got talent losers in reds (spits) club!
Yeah thanks it was really great ta! :tears:
Still City got the result & I saw the goals on bbc the next day!
Never again!

We're having a bite and a few pints beforehand. So I'd best watch how many I have, as I have to keep a lid on it tonight. I mean, I might just say the wrong thing...

City reported to Fifa over Elano payment

Fifa have confirmed they have received a complaint from Shakhtar Donetsk over the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Elano to Manchester City.

The playmaker joined City from Shakhtar last summer, and the Ukrainian side are claiming they are still owed £475,000 by the English outfit.

Shakhtar maintain that a ‘solidarity payment’ still needs to be made by City which, at five percent of the original £9.5 million transfer fee amounts to the sum they are asking for.

That fee is spread across clubs that contributed to the player’s youth development, but City reportedly believe the responsibility for that falls upon Shakhtar,

"We can confirm Donetsk have lodged a claim with Fifa regarding this matter," said a Fifa spokesman.

"As the relevant procedure will start in due course, we can't provide further comments for the time being."
