View Full Version : The Forgotten Mix Tapes
BoyRacer April 6, 2007, 07:35 AM So instead of just posting up a list of songs for others to check-out, I figured I would make you people a mix tape. Just like the ones we made back in the 80's on busted ass cassette's.
Soooooo grab a few of your favorites and zip em up so we can enjoy them.
Since this is in the "Other Music" forum, you can't put any Smiths or Moz on your mix. As for mine, I tried to make it a mix of new & older stuff, but also picked tracks that were obscure or things that the normal Joe will have never listened to but at the same time that I felt were good enough to be included on a mix. Let me know what you think, and I look forward to seeing what you all post up.

Stitchell April 6, 2007, 02:09 PM Great idea for a thread Boy Racer. I used to make mix tapes all the time but not since I got an mp3 player. And mix CD's aren't the same!
I think it can be hard to make a great mix tape. Should it flow or should it be a total mix of styles genres etc. In the end, it goes down to the tracks selected. I'll post something shortly. Hopefully a few other members will too, it coulb be a great insight into everyones tastes!
:)
Stitchell April 6, 2007, 02:14 PM Also, top marks for including a track from the Desaparecidos faultless album!:)
BoyRacer April 6, 2007, 03:04 PM Glad you liked it.
As for setting up your mix.... I think the content is more important than placement, though i fondly remember sitting around for hours planning song placement for that mix tape that with any bit of luck would end up playing up front in the auto as I would be in the back. hehehehehehe
I did not do placement on mine that i posted, mostly because unless I went back and numbered the tracks into position it wasn't gonna happen (I'm lazy like that). So just go with something you think would be cool enough to make the cut.
As for that song "Greater Omaha" ... best one on that disc. hehehehehe
P.S. For everyone else, should you find something on my mix that your interested in getting full copies of, just ask, and I will get you squared away.
XOXOXO

Grahamchard April 6, 2007, 03:45 PM Great idea guys I used to work reg nights and often made mix CD (mp3) to play the full length of shift just to annoy the other two guys I worked with HA HA I will gett one together and post it ASAP.

Uncleskinny April 6, 2007, 04:27 PM 'Tis a good idea. Particularly enjoyed the PIL one. I'll bung one up tomorrow. Really excited about a gadget I'm getting, that will widen my collection. I saw a music centre advertised yesterday that doesn't require a computer, but you put vinyl album on the turntable, and it converts it directly to MP3 for loading on your player or memory card, no computer required. I'm off to delve in the loft to get all that melodic hardcore out now (Leatherface, Drive, Snuff....)

Grahamchard April 6, 2007, 05:58 PM I really think mixtapes show us what frame of mind the maker is/was in when they were made. I have made numerous for work (see above) and I can listen back and think wow I must have been P***** off at that time or WOW thats a happy sounding bunch of tunes so see if you can decied what mood I am in listening to these tracks HA HA HA HA...............................:D

Grahamchard April 6, 2007, 07:40 PM Just a small point would it be wise to try and make the mixtapes so they fit on a cd....... ie 80mins
BoyRacer April 6, 2007, 07:53 PM Agreed.
Working a second one for you guys now.
This is turning out well thus far with just the 3 of us up to this point. There is some stuff on those that I have not heard before, and/or haven't gotten around to checking out. Which in reality was the purpose of starting the thread...... to see what others are listening to that I may or may not be missing out on.
Have another for ya shortly.

I've often thought that when looking back at past mixes: "Ooh, I must have been fun to be around when I made THAT tape...."
Looking forward to your mix Grahma, especially Rhythm is a Dancer! \m/ :)

dallow_bg April 9, 2007, 10:43 PM I didn't have the time to make a full mix for someone recently, so instead I made this quick 3 track EP so she could listen to something on the drive home. It has a sleepy, semi-hypnotic feel. (minus the cutesy first track)
1. Bow Wow Wow - Fools Rush In (cover)
2. Suicide - Cheree
3. Moondog - Pastoral
Hope you listen!

Cemetry Gates April 10, 2007, 12:39 PM Boy Racer,
Thank you for the mixtapes!
It's a forgotten art!
Did you see on MySpace about that company where you can trade tapes, etc? I think it's under International Mixtape Project.
If you check my myspace, spooky84, you'll find it there.
cheers.
PS: Do you do mixtapes for others on a regular basis? I do.
dallow_bg April 10, 2007, 06:00 PM I received two wonderful compilations via the International Mixtape Project.
Cemetry Gates April 10, 2007, 06:06 PM Hey Dallow_bg,
You did? What were they?
Hey, add me to your "friends" list if you'd like.
Slightly_Afraid April 11, 2007, 12:40 AM Hey, hope nobody minds if I join in this little share-party. I've knocked up a "mood" mix tape: this one's full of sad, weepy ballads that is perfect for late night, slightly depressed listening. Some of the stuff on here's not all that tyrendy, but - akk! - who cares, right?
BTW, tracks 17 and 18 are just so gorgeous it hurts!
1. Spiritualized - Ladies & Gentlemen We are Floating In Space
2. Ben Folds Five - Brick
3. Get Up Kids - Valentine
4. The Pipettes - Because It's Not Love
5. Smoking Popes - Megan
6. Third Eye Blind - The Background
7. The Dears - We Can Have It
8. The Thrills - Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
9. Bruce Springsteen - The River
10. Regina Spektor - Samson
11. Manic Street Preachers - Love Torn Us Under
12. Sia - Paranoid Android
13. Art Garfunkel - All I Know
14. Roxy Music - A Song For Europe
15. Rufus Wainwright - This Love Affair
16. Weezer - I Do
17. The Decemberists - Grace Cathedral Hill
18. Youth Group - Forever Young
19. The Beach Boys - Caroline, No

Bluebirds April 12, 2007, 08:07 AM Yeh cheers... loving the sad songs mix tape....the version of Paranoid android is completely despairing. (In a despairing way ie not crap!)
Making a Radiohead song sound even more depressing has to be a miacle of modern science!
I was walking to the shop last night listening to it and had to move on. MOVE ON. Too much for my new man sensibilities.
Stitchell April 12, 2007, 07:02 PM Looks a good mix Slightly Afraid, downloading now. Did anyone download my mix?:( ;)
I shall post another one later.

Stitchell April 12, 2007, 08:52 PM Here's one for the arrival of the global warming-boosted spring:
17 Degrees In Aberdeen (http://www.sendspace.com/file/hacg23)
Just a mix of upbeat tracks that sound good when out in the sun. Quite a few styles, rock, electronica, hip hop and indie. Do I apologise for the inclusion of Kelly Clarkson? Not a chance! This is my prefered tracklisting. Because these things matter.

Beating Heart Baby - Head Automatica
Surf Wax America - Weezer
Blue Skies - Longpigs
Richard III - Supergrass
Too Much Make Up - Turn

hatfull April 18, 2007, 07:28 PM Oh, I miss mix tapes so much! I used to be unbelievably anal ratentive about making them, I would make a list of the songs with the time the song lasted for on the side so I could add it all up and ensure I never cut off a song half way through. If the times wern't on the cd, I used to lie on the floor and time the songs on my cd player. Yes, i am serious. I used to view my mix tapes as a part of me, design the sleeve and post them to my friends. The rules:
1) only 1 song per artist per side.
2) If you had a band featuring a singer and wanted to put on their solo work, you had to leave a 3 song gap between (at least)
3) The tape had to have a 'mood' and a 'flow'
.....OCD? Me? Never (not that it is a bad thing)
I really want to take part in this, but I am a country bumpkin with computers, how do i file share and upload this stuff?

Godlovesugly April 18, 2007, 09:34 PM Right, i really am a total idiot with this stuff. The tracks are on computer. How do i copy and paste them into a zip folder?
You just need to stick the tracks in a normal folder
then use Winrar (right click on the folder, click add to archive the icon looks like a set of books) and then just click o.k when the winrar thing pops up
if you haven't got winrar i could find a full version for you maybe or just use a trial version just google winrar

Hidden By Rags August 25, 2007, 10:08 PM Great thread. Been a while since I made a mixtape, but this is nice, less pressure to get a set amount of people involved.
Here's mine, it's an electro/dance mix, I had no control over the order as it was dumped in track number order (that's a Mac for you!):
Hope someone enjoys it (http://rapidshare.com/files/51285144/electro_dance_mixtape.zip.html)

Stitchell October 18, 2007, 09:26 PM Here's the mix I've been 'working' (arf) on lately, made for a pal who wanted something to play loud and jump about to:
Musically Upbeat Mix (http://www.sendspace.com/file/43xbwu)
My tracklisting:
Walking Barefoot - Ash ...One of the great power pop bands IMHO, a great, bursting intro gives way to an ideal piece of pop to make you smile
Undone (The Sweater Song) - Weezer ...Straight into a track by a band influentual on the previous group, sad and euphoric at the saem time, especially, 'woo hoo hoo' coda
Velouria - Pixies ... Current fave Pixies track, love the keening, soulful verses
The One - Foo Fighters ...More big, dumb rock from Dave Grohl, who should be too old to be writing lyrics like this but its a great bounce along track
Take Me To The Riot - Stars ...amazing standout from the Canadians dramatic new album. Vocals reminiscent of Moz
Israel's Son - Silverchair ...Don't know much about this one, included simply because it's a favourite of the person the mix is made for. Frantic, rock-out at the end
Heinrich Manouver - Interpol ...Who cares about the 'oblique' lyrics when the musis is so dynamic?
Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode ...Probably doesn't need to be introduced to folk on here. Majestic
New Years - Asobi Seksu - Like a punch-up in a candyfloss shop. Thumping, shoegazing pop, full of vocal hooks
Taste The Last Girl - Sons And Daughters ...A Smiths-like standout from the groups excellent last album
Giddy Stratospheres - Long Blondes ...Danceable pop imploring it's subject to dump their boring partner who won't let them take them on all fours again. Cue dancing round the living room
I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You - Black Kids ...Couldn't resist a song with a title like that and glad I didn't. Great lyrics and a chorus to shout.
Standing In The Way Of Control - The Gossip ...Opinions on Beth Ditto aside, she has a great voice and this is great pop
Beating Heart Baby - Head Automatic ...More danceable rock pop, anyone familiar with Daryl's band Glassjaw may well be surprised by this track
Black Minds White Lies - Salty Pirates ...Came across the track on "The Kids At The Club", an indiepop collection. The band are from Sweden and this track is structured to incite euphoria by the second time the chorus explodes
Take The Skinheads Bowling - Camper Van Beethoven ...Found out about this track after it was covered by the Manics, surreal lyrics and great chorus
Shakespeares Sister - The Smiths :)
Perfect - Fairground Attraction ...Thought this would sound good coming after Shakes, same kind of 'vibe', can't fail to smile
Valerie (Zutons Cover) - Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse ...again, opinions aside, Amy could sing Matchbook fuckin 20 tracks and make them appealing. Great production, 100 times better than the original
Lovefool (Cardigans Cover) - Just Jack ...Surprisingly good cover of (IMHO) a sickly sweet original
For Reasons Unknown - The Killers ...some bombast to finish with, my new fave of theirs. Think Morrissey would sound great singing this.
If you download this, let me know what you think!:)
Stitchell October 24, 2007, 07:50 PM Did anyone download my mix?!:)
++++++ October 25, 2007, 01:06 AM Great idea for a thread. I've got some downloading to do.

I mean, somebody does like it, don't they, thats good enough for me :lbf:

Raphael Lambach September 16, 2009, 09:39 PM It's the unreleased songs from Brazilian band called Aborto Elétrico.
http://www.abortoeletrico.hpg.com.br/mp3.htm
They were formed in 78 and end up in 82 when Renato Russo left the band. Their songs was played by Legião Urbana - Russo's band - and Capital Inicial - Fê and Flávio Lemos' band - that goes on today.
Russo died in 96.
