The first of two dates in Philadelphia went down very well. Morrissey was in top form and very talkative and witty. The audience was more responsive than in Washington. There were a few stage invaders, particularly during the encore. The setlist length was brought back to the standard 17 songs by the addition of "Munich Air Disaster 1958".
Morrissey greeted the audience "It's Friday, it's Philly, I'll try not to be silly." Another concert was happening at the same time in Philadelphia, Rock For Change which was put together in support of American Democrat candidate John Kerry. Morrissey actually commented about voting for Kerry somewhere in the show, and he introduced himself as Bruce Springroll, a pun on Bruce Springsteen who was playing the pro-Kerry festival. He also referred to 'Springroll' a second time, later in the show.
Morrissey asked what sitcoms were filmed in Philadelphia and someone incorrectly answered The Cosby Show. At some point he enquired to a fan "What's your name? Oh, I've never heard of you. Must have been an extra from the Cosby Show." He announced that he would be appearing on David Letterman on November 16th. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" was credited by Morrissey as being from "The Queen Is Dad".
There was a sound drop somewhere in "Now My Heart Is Full". It was quickly fixed and some people didn't notice it happening, depending on where they were seated. Morrissey referred to front row regular Julia Riley several times, as was tradition. When some stage climber jumped on Morrissey's back, Morrissey joked "I knew I'd be taken from behind one day." A few shirts ended up in the audience by the end of the show. Before the encore Morrissey said something that sounded like a farewell: "Thank you Philadelphia... we will not be this way again... so thank you and goodbye!"
