View Full Version : Juvenile lyrics?
Tbevie December 19, 2006, 05:29 PM I was listening to the XFM interview last night (again) and Moz was talking about how he chooses which songs to sing live and he was saying that there were some older songs that he couldn’t sing now because the lyrics were a bit juvenile.
I had a think about it and nothing really stands out, maybe ‘what difference does it make’, but he never really liked that song anyway, did he?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to which songs/lyrics he might have been referring to?
half a person December 19, 2006, 05:35 PM Maybe things like Miserable lie and Handsome Devil... those were the ones that jumped to mind, though I like both of those songs myself.
Mozzaa December 19, 2006, 05:38 PM AS Much As i Love It Maybe Handsom Devil. And Maybe Angel, Angel....(As It Is Apparently About Marr) Or Maybe About Lyrical Context Meaning Things From The Past Like Cemetry Gates Etc.

But he still does the Headmaster Ritual sometimes, doesn't he? And that's 'about the past'...
mozmic_dancer December 19, 2006, 05:43 PM That's a good question. I thought of some that come to mind not because I think the lyrics are juvenille, but because they seem to me they sound like they are spoken in a voice of a younger man. "Piccadilly Palare" could be one ("On the rack I was easy meat and ect."):p
Here are some that come to mind, mostly Smith stuff and early solo:
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
Miserable Lie
Pretty Girls Make Graves
Driving Your Girlfriend Home
I Know Very Well How I Got My Name
Suedehead
Kickstand December 19, 2006, 05:44 PM Vicar in a Tutu.
The Youngest December 19, 2006, 05:45 PM I was thinking about it too and I think This Charming Man could be one.
I also liked the part when he said that he couldn't sing certain songs because he was of a certain age! :D
Christine December 19, 2006, 05:45 PM Maybe 'Ask', although I like that song. By juevnelie do you think he's means written about teenage matters or just lyrics which are childishly/ badly written?
Mozzaa December 19, 2006, 05:46 PM True But I'm Only Making An Observation Like Everyone Else No-One Knows But Himself...So None Of Us Are The Wiser Until He Says..
Mozzaa December 19, 2006, 05:47 PM Most Of These Songs Mentioned Morrissey Has Never Touched Upon As A Solo Artist Most Of The Smiths Ones Anyway,

I love that 'a woman of a certain age' :D I don't care he could be 60 singing about being 16 and I wouldn't care. He knows I'd love to hear 'This Charmng Man' :( :)

Yeah that’s what I thought he meant. Lyrics that maybe he’s a bit embarrassed about now or maybe lyrics that he can’t really identify with anymore.
Amy December 19, 2006, 05:51 PM lol, even Morrissey's most juvenile lyrics are poetic masterpieces in comparison with most artists' turgid, syrupy bile :p
Mozzaa December 19, 2006, 05:53 PM Depends What He Classes As Juvenille I Mean I Think The Kegs Between The Legs In Dear God... Is A Great Lyrics But Juvenille

Worm December 19, 2006, 06:00 PM Girl Afraid, You've Got Everything Now, Rusholme Ruffians, Miserable Lie...
Somehow I think the line "I look at yours, you laugh at mine" would be less than appropriate for a 47 year old man.
But it would be fun if he sang them anyway, improvising "updated" lyrics.

Someone pointed out "explosive kegs" comes from one of Patti Smith's songs, but I can't remember the title of the song.
Danny December 19, 2006, 06:10 PM I don't think he meant juvenile because of the sentiment. Just who the song is meant to come from.
For instance, it would be a bit weird for him to sing about being "a boy with a thorn in his side". He'd have to change it to "man" or it would be ridiculous.
Similarly, Last of the Famous seems a bit young for him now, because it is written from the point of view of a young hooligan.
I don't think he means he thinks the songs are juvenile.

The Patti Smith song that comes to my mind is "Hey, Joe" from Morrissey's Under the Influence where she talks about the "barbed wire between her legs, ya know."
Is there another song?

I believe that's the reference Kewpie meant. I mentioned once on this forum that I think "explosive kegs between my legs" could very well have been inspired by Patti's "barbed wire" line. Morrissey even quoted that line in the sleevenote to Under the Influence.

Isn't "Hey, Joe" a Jimi Hendrix cover? or did she do some lyric alterations Moz style? To be honest I haven't heard the original.

The whole spoken-word part about Patty Hearst was, of course, Patti Smith's addition.
Hendrix was already covering "Hey Joe". For a long time I used to think it was a traditional, but here's what Wikiepedia has to say about the authorship of the song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Joe

Ok, thanks. Always though it was Hendrix who made that one. To be honest I have been more interested in "Piss Factory". That sounds like a Patti Smith thing to add though.
