yesterday I heard two different people say, "My kids school clothes were so expensive. They will only wear American Outfitters".

These are high school kids they are talking about. My impression is this. I would not wear American Outfitters if I had a free lifetime shopping spree. There's nothing wrong with it, but it just looks like worn casual clothing, the way my levis and tshirts look when they start to get a little faded. That's fine but it has big logos on it which should just say "consumer robot".

This is not to knock those of you that wear it. Maybe it's really comfortable and has a nice fit. And I do wear some things with logos. With jackets and shoes it's hard not to. And I pretty much wear certain brands of pants, Levis and Ben Davis, mostly. These are functional though, and they last.

I could not imagine going in to American Outfitters and buying one of those "distressed" tshirts when I can buy a perfectly good one at Mervyn's for $6 if I wait for the sale.

I wore some weird stuff in high school because it was what other people were wearing. Maybe I forget about the pressure to fit in. But I have to say I was disappointed to hear that brand mentioned by two random people as something their kids wear exclusively. People are not that tuned in to style in my town anyway, so maybe people elsewhere are more into being an individual, or at least not falling for that overpriced "distressed" look.

well gee i dunno. I am wearing 7 jeans right now. They are 180 bucks yeah, but they are the only ones that fit so well... they look 10000 times better!

i kinda have to buy trendy stuff for when i go into work (i shoot for a trendy company once a month - like the kind of place you might run into moz - all gucci and armani and movie stars and all that) after i got a couple of expensive things for work... i realized that its just so much better fit and quality
made in usa too rather than china where children work for 3 cents an hour.

oh okay good. and i am not an image maker... no... i shoot and retouch the interior and exterior of the stores... I shoot what the store designers create - which is very funky and fun. I just make sure its lit right, technically perfect, i retouch and remove the glare in the windows and make everything ready for presentation and archive.

Its just consistency, accuracy, and quality shooting. I don't decorate the window or stores or anything like that. I do keep up on what is fashionable and the people who I work for are creative genius in business. Wonderfully fashionable but soooo down to earth and fun. I doubt that they would fire or judge me should I wear cheap clothes... its just very uncomfortable for me to walk in wearing cheap clothes when I know how they are sooo into it and notice everything.

I know what you mean... i know that those clothes don't wear me... and i know many people who are worn by them. I live on Long Island just a few miles away from where "The Great Gatsby" took place...

wonderful book by the way... i know you would love it dave. I just know it... i hope you have read it!

(oh and i am not rich either - but i am not poor so that I cannot make space in the budget for clothes... I just choose carefully and do not buy a million things i will never wear. not much stuff... but nice stuff is the way to go for the not so rich i would say... also i am luckier than many - my folks have two houses and i get to "housesit" much of the year... otherwise rent in new york would not allow me to have ever become a freelance photographer - i would be hustling in a 9-5 cause it takes time, money, and learning to even start up... my camera gear for instance... my goodness... you spend A LOT starting a photo business. not easy... but definitely challenging and fun... and you have time to read books... at the moment i am reading THE IDIOT... great book...)
