Alright, here is a list of all the alternate versions of songs (as in released ones, like single edits, not demos, a list of which would probably be far too vast) I've found on Passions Just Like Mine. I'm half requesting those I don't have and many others don't have as well and half uploading those I do have for others. Of course this thread won't end up seeing all these songs posted, but whatever is uploaded will be very appreciated by several people myself included. Don't count on it, but in the end if I can successfully do so, I will attempt to put them all into some kind of folder that I can upload all at once whenever requested so people can get all of them in one place.

In addition, shouldn't the Troy Tate version of Pretty Girls Make Graves (released as B-side to I Started Something...) be mentioned? There are also several live versions of various songs released as B-sides. Out of those, I have:

Handsome Devil
Meat Is Murder
Stretch Out and Wait
Nowhere Fast
Hand In Glove
Shakespeare's Sister
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others

I also have live versions of Girl Afraid and William, It Was Really Nothing that I downloaded from Soulseek, they're tagged as 'Rare tracks on vinyl' so I suppose they should be B-sides too?

Pretty Girls Make Graves (Troy Tate session) (http://www.sendspace.com/file/n7wjri) (used as B-side to I Started Something...)

An excellent version, IMO much better than the one on The Smiths. All Troy Tate sessions are worth hearing. Many of them are superior to the John Porter-produced tracks on the debut. The highlights, apart from Pretty Girls, include Miserable Lie (miles better than the version on the debut, although the Peel session is probably the best), Suffer Little Children (less slow and droning than the one on the debut, has a certain tension that the other version lacks, and it also has a haunting piano coda later used on Asleep), Wonderful Woman (less polished, more raw than the one from TCM, Johnny's guitar might not that beautiful, but Morrissey vocal is very emotional - one of his best early vocal performances). What Difference Does It Make? sounds very unusual due to strange backing vocal, courtesy of Johnny Marr, which gives it a slightly spooky atmosphere.

*About Let the Right One, that is the only version of the song I have, but since it does fade-out, I assume that is the rarer version and that I do not have the more common one.

I doubt it is the in uploading/downloading, it must be from the CD ripping or from however someone got it off of vinyl.

I've been scanning Passions and many of these are not listed which, because that site is so accurate, leaves me thinking many may be unofficial edits made by fans. Such was the case with the edit of Black Eyed Susan that was sent round a while ago. I know to some this doesn't mean a piss but it does to me so this is just a note that they might not be 100% legit edits...

I know I noticed the same thing, the lack of recognition from Passions, the lack of a release. So they might not be 100% legal, or they could be extremely rare alternate edits done by the producer/studio/record company, which is extremely unlikely though.

leipzigcure77, I will eventually upload all of the songs I have that you are seeking. Most of the songs on that list were never uploaded and so not in my possession, but those I do have I will upload, though it will take a while. :)

Re The longer version of Will Never Marry.

The longer version was the original b-side to Everyday is Like Sunday, but for some reason it was shortened when put on Bona Drag. Maybe there wasn't enough room on the record for the extra time, or maybe Moz thought it was better shorter, who knows.

Well that depends on what software and audio player you have. Sorry I'm not an expert on the technical aspects of this stuff, but there are many, many very knowledgeable and friendly people on the forum who have helped me out with similar matters in the past. You could try searching something like "MP3 converting" and probably find a couple threads explaining several ways to do it. :)

The long version is the one you want. You hear a lady (Street's wife), saying "Steven....STEVEN!!!", as if Morrissey's mother is calling him back from the brink of marriage in the manner of a mother calling her child in the playground. Genius.

Peter

I have owned this CD single, long version of "Will Never.." for 20 years (since it came out) and never heard the "Steven, Steven" part until now. I've always heard the "playground" sounds, but never really heard what they were saying. Are they also chanting "Steven"?
But now I hear the "mother" calling him.

It takes a pair of headphones to let one hear what is really in the recording.

Thank you Uncle for your insight.

I have always liked this song and others of its era for the string arrangements. I would like to hear Morrissey go back to this sound...but you can never go home again.

Having to track down everything seems to be a bit of a habit of mine, some might say a problem....But, it sure is great when something really hard to find suddenly shows up.

Here is the flac rip: http://www.sendspace.com/file/k3snjk

This is the first time I've ripped as FLAC so if there is any trouble let me know and I'll try again. I used Winamp to do it.

Excellent, I can't wait to wrap my ears around those.

On a side note, I've been looking over some eBay auctions (not that I have any cash) for some of the other things I need. I found a copy of the US single "My Love Life" on there:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MORRISSEY-My-Love-Life-3-Track-CD-OOP-The-SMITHS_W0QQitemZ230099531715QQihZ013QQcategoryZ307 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230 099531715

This contains the 4:49 full lenght version but the description lists:

- My Love Life - With Chrissie Hynde 4:49

What's the deal, is that a mistake?

I'm looking for the following and I wonder if someone might have them:

The Queen is Dead (6:06) from the CD-single of "How Soon Is Now?"

I Want the one I can't have (Live Paris 2002) (4:41). It was apparently an official download at the time of the IJWTSTBH single.

Anybody have these? Thanks in advance.

Nobody has mentioned this one so far, but it's listed at passions... does that mean you already have it?

Miserable Lie - live in Oxford 18/3/85 {4:27} from a Rough Trade compilation (Canada and Holland various artists compilation)

And I'm still looking for (just as everybody else) for

How Soon is Now? - Phil Brown edit {3:53}
How Soon is Now? - other edit {5:30} UK Buzz #004, a USA radio-only sampler LP
What Difference Does It Make? - single edit {3:25}
The Headmaster Ritual - Phil Brown edit {3:45}

the passionsjustlikemine site also lists:

Rubber Ring / Asleep {7:56} - 12" and cd-single of "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" (except in Japan)

Is this really a mix/do the songs fade into each other? Is there is an actual difference between that and those two songs played back to back?

They fade one into the other. It's nicely done. They never should have split the songs apart.

Well, they barely overlap. Whereas the standalone "Rubber Ring" has a single "you do not want to believe...you are sleeping" after the music stops, the medley has a couple more, during which the howling winds start up for "Asleep."

p.s. I bought my copy from Stephane. Thanks, Stephane!

I asked about them years ago in the old Marketplace. I think I picked them up from a record fair kind of thinking they were bootlegs due to their sparse packaging, but from what I remember someone suggested they could actually be internal promos. They're definitely different runtimes than the released versions.

I've not played them in ages, but on closer examination I think we established that both had their intros shorn down, while someone pointed out that something in the lyrics was very slightly different in Satan.

I'll dig them out and give them a listen. To be honest it may take me a while to notice anything different at all - I've never been big on either track, and it's been a while since I listened to the actual released versions.

CemetryGates
March 7, 2007, 07:23 PM
I'd be interested to hear them myself if you're up for posting them. What does internal promo mean?

lutewhine
March 7, 2007, 08:24 PM
I think the suggestion was "internal" as in CDs for employees of the label, as opposed to distribution to press, radio etc.

Anyway, I'll try and dig them out.

Just add .mp3 to the end of the file that I have posted. I guess the lenghty filename was too much for Sendspace and it got cut off making it unrecognizable to your computer. Try that and if that doesn't work I'll rename it and repost the file again. It's not a re-recording as far as I know, it's just edited down I think.

Morrissey - Roy's Keen (radio edit)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/n53syg

Morrissey - Satan Rejected My Soul (radio edit)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/o40vj3

Roy's Keen is 3:14, compared to the single version which is 3:34
Satan... is 2:43, compared to the single version which is 2:56

As I thought, they come in a lot more promptly than the released versions I've got. They're both labelled as radio edits on the inlays. Couldn't immediately pick out any lyrical difference in either of them, but I do definitely recall someone pointing something out years back.

There's also another CD with the same labelling and packaging, labelled simply "E.P.", which has all the Maladjusted-era B-sides, albeit in a different order from the Rare Tracks CD. It doesn't list run-times, so I'll check them against the singles at some point. Just flicking through it, none of them sound unusual.

I don't hear any lyrical differences, except that the fade-out on "Roy's Keen" either happens later than on the release (so that you can hear a few more vocals) or I just never paid enough attention to the end of the original. The difference in "Satan" seems to be the removal of a non-vocal section. Thanks for posting them! (No chance of 192kpbs uploads of them, is there? We promise not to counterfeit them!)

THANK YOU!

Everything else has either been uploaded for you or unavailable.

I now have everything released besides:

Meat Is Murder (live Oxford 18/3/85) {5:54} ("Animal Liberation" compilation)
Miserable Lie (live Oxford 18/3/85) {4:27} (Rough Trade "Compilation")
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others (without fade-in) {3:14} (David's ordered this hasn't he?)
William It Was Really Nothing (live at Oxford Apollo 18/3/85) (12" test pressing of the Meat is Murder live EP)

Thanks for sharing people.

Of these, I have only the "Meat Is Murder" from the Animal Liberation LP, but I haven't yet digitized it. The extra 20 seconds of crowd noise aren't a big motivator to do so anytime soon :)

I asked about them years ago in the old Marketplace. I think I picked them up from a record fair kind of thinking they were bootlegs due to their sparse packaging, but from what I remember someone suggested they could actually be internal promos. They're definitely different runtimes than the released versions.

Sorry for so many posts in this thread, but I found that Stefan Krix (http://www.krix-s.de/morrissey_releases2.htm) does indeed list a 3:26 radio-edit promo for "Roy's Keen," but doesn't mention any difference for the "Satan" promo.

Haha I can see why it wouldn't, but it's an alternative version, so naturally I MUST have it. :o

Could I ask what the steps for digitizing tracks are? I'm curious...

Seriously, though, I'd like to see even crappy scans and find out what Stephane (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/member.php?u=402) and Stefan Krix (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/member.php?u=212) have to say about them, since they seem to be among the residents experts on promos.

I own those... They are not promos, they serve in-house purposes. That's why they are not listed in the song versions list on "Passions Just Like Mine". The versions were never distributed, not even on promos. They were probably considered at some point, but the promos were still produced with the same versions that were released.

"Roys Keen" is not even listed as a 'radio edit', simply 'edit'.

And my "Satan..." acetate cd actually says the song is 2:56, like the released version. However I didn't put it in the cd player to check if it was shorter.

Could I ask what the steps for digitizing tracks are? I'm curious...

My current setup is:

Technics SLDD-33 turntable (~1987 vintage) (priceless)
TCC TC-750LC Phono Preamp ($50) (TCC TC-750LC Phono Preamp)
Griffin iMic (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/) ($35)
iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo (priceless) :D
RogueAmoeba Audio Hijack Pro (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/) (sound in to AIFF, noise reduction) ($32)
RogueAmoeba Fission (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/fission/) (track splitting) ($18)
iTunes (AAC & MP3 conversion) (free)

To capture, select the system's default sound in as the source, pick a location to save the tracks, press "Hijack" and "Record," then play the record. When finished, split the tracks with Fission, and add tags in iTunes.

I'm not an audiophile; in fact, I don't even own a pair of headphones to make editing easier, so my recordings wouldn't pass muster with, say the FLAC/smithstorrents die-hards. True audiophiles can probably also tell that my turntable could use a new needle. :)

Hi all,

i can only second Stephane as usual. I do have 4 different Cd versions of "Satan" and they all run 2:56 as stated on all sleeves.

"Roy's Keen" is s bit different. Someone submitted a scan of the in-house CDR which clearly stated 3:26. Without having the possibility to prove it, i do think that this version will be the same as the normal one(s), which do vary in itself: the Island commercial version says 3:36, the Island promo 3:34 (as also stated on the Maladjusted sleeve).

Not having read the whole thread (so please excuse if i do only repeat things already mentioned), the only songs available commercially in alternate versions are "I've Changed My Plea To Guilty" (UK / US), "I'd Love To" (UK / US), "Moonriver" (7" /12"), "Tomorrow" (Original / Radio Remix), "Will Never Marry" (Original / Edit), "Now My Heart Is Full" (Original / Radio Edit), "Cosmic Dancer" (different Live / Instore recordings), "My Love Life" (Uk / US), "Interlude" (original / extended / instrumental) and "The Boy Racer" (Original / Fade / Radio Edit).

Correct. The "Fade" and "radio edit" are probably one and the same. And it's a 2-track promo (at least mine--the one with the black lettering on orange cover--is).

FWIW, the "Fade" version doesn't fade out at all; it just truncates the non-vocal part a bit.

Just to confuse matters even further, I've got two copies of the Roy's Keen in-house CDR, which I've always assumed to be the same. They're both exactly the same on the outside (stating "Roy's Keen Edit"), but they are actually two different run-times.

One is the 3:26 edit that Stefan and Stephane are talking about, while the other is the 3:14 edit that I uploaded yesterday. The latter is labelled "Roy's Keen Radio Edit 3:14" on the inside of the inlay. The 3:14 edit seems to fade out earlier and more abruptly.

As for the Satan edit, I think it's the second chorus that's different, going by the lyrics here at It May All End Tomorrow (http://www.oz.net/~moz/lyrics/maladjus/satanrej.htm).

Can someone confirm if the second verse in the recorded version begins "Take it please/It's free" or "Take it please/It's really sly"? I took my CD single to work today and inadvertantly left it there, so I can't check it myself. This does ring a bell, but I'd be grateful if someone else could check it out and let me know. I think I've listened to the damn song more times since last night than the previous 9 and a half years since the bloody thing came out!

Indeed. I read it every day, which probably contributed to Stephane maxing out his bandwidth in January.

I've been itching to write up a Passions "companion" that would allow you to keep track of your collection by automatically checking off song versions whenever you obtain a given release (e.g. buying the Rare Tracks EP would check off all of the b-sides from Maladjusted), but that's straying off-topic here.

Well, I'll be jiggered: you're absolutely right. Here's my non-scientific analysis--the album version is on the left, the promo one on the right:

0:00 "grinding" guitar preamble -
0:10 guitar riff 0:00
0:24 verse 1 0:14
0:50 chorus 1 ("it's free") 0:39
1:07 verse 2 0:55
1:32 chorus 2 ("sly" on Maladjusted; "it's free" on promo) 1:22
1:42 "come on, come on" 1:31
1:47 chorus 3 ("sly" on both) 1:40
2:02 bridge 1:51
2:16 "call me in" 2:04
2:56 end 2:43

I would never have noticed this if you hadn't mentioned it. In fact, I thought that the edit came off the end, but of course it's the opening 10 seconds that were lopped off.

Right. The UK promo is 1 track; the US is 2. Thanks to everyone who shared their rarities.

Personally I found How Soon Is Now (Alt. Version - Italy 12'' ''William It Was Really Nothing'') and Jack The Ripper to be the most interesting alternates.
The radio edits and fades outs of versions are nice in that they are different, but these two songs are truely unique.

What is the difference with the Work Is A Four Letter Word that was shared here from that on the cd single. It's been a long time since I listened to it to know the diff.

And who is Phil Brown?

Do you mean the studio version of "JtR"? It's quite bizarre, especially since the live version is so well-known, not to mention pretty well-loved my members of this forum.

I'm one of those who prefer the studio version.

Why are all the edits of How Soon Is Now so awful? Maybe not the one from UK Buzz, but the rip of that one is full of sounds of vinyl cracking and hissing. The thing is, I'm making a The Smiths mix CD for a friend who really needs to be converted to Smithdom, I've almost decided on the tracklist but it turns out about half a minute too long. :( And I've even put the single edit of That Joke... I'm not going to put the single edit of Last Night I Dreamt..., the album version is so much better, so unless there's a shorter version of HSIN I'll have to chuck some other song out.

I know I'm ignorant to say this and that you probably already have it or the quality of it isn't great, but I have the edit they used in the unofficial video that I find superior. It loses nothing, the ending is somewhat different. The "there's a club" bridge is followed immediately by "when you say it's gonna happen now" and then just the line "I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does" in the slightly different way of delivery Morrissey uses unlike the earlier appearances of the chorus.

BTW, while I prefer the live version of Jack the Ripper, I adore the studio version.

That's the 'Phil Brown edit' (3:57), right? I'm not happy with it, the ending sounds very strange. It sounds OK until the final "I am human..." part, that part just feels stuck at the end, it doesn't feel natural at all. I think she may be converted. She knows very few Smiths songs - only those that are played very often in clubs, probably. She knows Girlfriend In A Coma and Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others and hates both. it's funny that people usually say The Smiths are 'miserable' and 'depressive', and she said she disliked them because they're silly and frivolous. :D She was particularly annoyed by Girlfriend because she thought it was sick to treat such a subject matter in such a light manner. I tried to explain that she should heard other songs...those two are really not the best possible introduction to The Smiths...

fortunately she's started to come to her senses, she said a while ago that she read some of Morrissey's lyrics and it changed her opinion completely. :) I think she's now ripe for conversion, it's also her birthday in a week, the mix CD will make a good present. (of course I'm also going to burn the whole Smiths/Moz discography and lots of other stuff on a DVD, but I think an audio CD is a more immediate way to get someone to listen)

I'll probably end up using the Phil Brown edit after all. it's still better than the 'Shine' edit that crops half of the song.

I have always loved the studio version of jack the ripper but the live version on Beethoven just cranks it up a bit and did make the song more electric for me, I enjoyed it more as a live track. Then I heard it on the tour in 2004 and beyond when he took the line "crash in to my arms, I want you" up at the end and not down and fell completely in love with that version. Just that subtle change to the way that line is delivered for me makes the song. I would have loved to have heard the studio version sung that way and with the more electrified guitar riffs. (not sure if anyone agrees or thinks I am rambling but I think I understand me!)

I know I'm ignorant to say this and that you probably already have it or the quality of it isn't great, but I have the edit they used in the unofficial video that I find superior.
