Kewpie November 24, 2006, 02:10 PM This is for commemotating people who recently passed away.
Very sad to hear the news that great French actor Philippe Noire's departure.
He left many great films and my favourites are
Zazie den le metro
La vie de chateau
Alexandre le bienheureux
Le Vieux fusil
Cinema Paradiso
Il Postino
Alexsandre le bienheureux is a little gem: when the protagonist's bossy wife was killed by car accident he regains freedom, stops working and stays in bed all day! His pet dog is doing his errands. I also love really beautiful soundtrack by Valdimr Cosma.
In Le Vieux Fusil, Noire plays a vengeful surgeon whose beautiful wife and daughter were murdered by Nazis. I saw the film on TV when I was 12, still cannot get over its devastating image.
I missed an opportunity to meet him in 2000 when he was attending fund raising gala at Institut Francais, but very grateful to see many excellent films he made in more than 40 years and many people will discover/watch them.

Oh my god, it's Robby! December 25, 2006, 07:51 PM i saw him perform live
when he was past 60
and he was awesome
i had not even come to see him perform
but i thought i heard his voice and said
"Is that James Brown?"
the other people i was with did not care
so i told em
"I'm gonna go check it out."
and slowly i made it to the front, where i could better see him do
'his thing'
which struck me more like a spiritual revival
than merely a performance
he bantered too
and did not seem to mind that most of the crowd did not know his tunes real well
then he played
Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
and i realized
'woa, this aint my music, but its still awesome'
it was one of those
'hey, there really is something called 'objectivity' moments...'

The Seeker of Good Songs June 4, 2007, 09:28 PM Charles Nelson Reilly, Tony-Winning Comic Actor, Dies at 76
His humor makes me think of Morrissey somehow...can't explain why...maybe it was the way he could insult the old lady who sat next to him on the game show.

http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Goodbye-Charles-Nelson-Reilly-4447.html
Hollywood has a bad habit of forcing actors into a neat little mold, constantly bombarding audiences with the same images of chiseled men and busty, superficial women. Charles Nelson Reilly was different. Quirky, irreverent, and always original, the eccentric pioneer lit up Broadway and won over millions as one of the loveable judges on ‘Match Game (http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Goodbye-Charles-Nelson-Reilly-4447.html#).’ .
Nelson Reilly broke onto the scene in 1962 with a Tony winning performance in “How To Succeed In Business Without Trying.” He continued to captivate Broadway audiences for a few years until surprising everyone and landing recurring roles on ‘The Steve Lawrence Show’ and ‘The Ghost And Mrs. Muir’; however, it wasn’t until a few years later that he finally found his niche.
‘Match Game’ was the perfect platform for Reilly’s bizarre and edgy humor. From catty arguments with Brett Summers to mocking Gene Rayburn, he quickly became the game show’s most recognizable star. It took a special performer to get away with gay sex double-entendres during the 1970s, and Charles Nelson was just that man.
After the long running program came to an end, Reilly stayed busy teaching (http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Goodbye-Charles-Nelson-Reilly-4447.html#) acting and returning to the stage. He was even nominated for consecutive Emmy Awards in ’98 and ’99 for cameos in ‘The Drew Carey Show’ and ‘Millenium.’ Sadly, he developed a bad case of pneumonia and passed away on Friday. He was 76 years old.
Today, countless actors (http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Goodbye-Charles-Nelson-Reilly-4447.html#) owe their fame to the bifocaled legend. His flamboyance and unequivocal originality paved the way for hundreds of effeminate performers to come. In fact, it was Nelson Reilly, himself, who said it best when he uttered, “I was told that I would never be allowed on television. Now I wanna know who I have to fuck to get off of it.”
Goodbye, Charles. You will be missed.

By PATRICK McGEEHAN (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/patrick_mcgeehan/index.html?inline=nyt-per)
Published: May 28, 2007
Charles Nelson Reilly (http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=59467&inline=nyt-per), who acted and directed on Broadway but came to be best known for his campy television appearances on talk shows and “Match Game,” died on Friday in Los Angeles. He was 76 and lived in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The cause was complications of pneumonia, said his partner, Patrick Hughes, who is his only immediate survivor. Mr. Reilly had been ill for more than a year, he said.
Long before moving west to become what he somewhat ruefully described as a “game show fixture,” Mr. Reilly was an actor and an acting teacher in New York City. In 1962, he won a Tony Award (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/theater/theaterspecial/index.html?8qa&inline=nyt-classifier) for his portrayal of Bud Frump in the original Broadway production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
But he was proudest of “The Belle of Amherst,” a one-woman play starring Julie Harris (http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=93526;movies&inline=nyt-per) based on the life of Emily Dickinson, which he directed on Broadway at the Longacre Theater in 1976, said Timothy Helgeson, who collaborated with him on the show. Two decades later, Mr. Reilly directed Ms. Harris and Charles Durning (http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=20780&inline=nyt-per) in a revival of “The Gin Game” at the Lyceum Theater. He was nominated for a Tony for best director in 1997, and Ms. Harris was nominated for best actress.
His final work was an autobiographical one-man show, “Save It for the Stage: The Life of Reilly,” in which he recounted his difficult childhood. Born in the Bronx, the only child of a Swedish mother and an Irish father, Mr. Reilly told of the pain of being considered the oddest member of a decidedly odd family.
He explained the title of his show by saying that, when he was a child, his mother would often cut him off from speaking by admonishing him to “save it for the stage.” His father, he told audiences, never got over having passed up a chance to move to Hollywood and work with a budding animation artist named Walt Disney.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. Reilly, with his ascots, oversize spectacles and over-the-top penchant for double-entendres, was a regular on television. He appeared more than 95 times on the “Tonight” show with Johnny Carson (http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=11370&inline=nyt-per) and was a panelist on game shows like “Match Game” and “Hollywood Squares.”
In a 2001 interview with The Advocate, the national gay magazine, Mr. Reilly reflected on the effect those shows had on his professional prospects. “You can’t do anything else once you do game shows,” he said. “You have no career.”
Mr. Reilly’s openly gay persona was many years ahead of its time on television, and it had its risks. He recalled being dismissed early in his career by a network executive, who told him that “they don’t let queers on television.” Paul Linke, who directed the one-man show, said Mr. Reilly later had the last laugh when he would page through TV Guide and count how many times he was on the air that week.

SNS22 July 31, 2007, 05:54 PM Tom Snyder...
American television personality, news anchor, and radio personality best known for his late night talk shows The Tomorrow Show, on the NBC television network in the 1970s and '80s, and The Late Late Show, on the CBS television network in the 1990s.
Peak moments with Snyder on Tomorrow included John Lennon's final televised interview, in April 1975 (replayed in December 1980 as a tribute to Lennon, and later released on home video), and Irish rock band U2's first American television appearance in June 1981. Also memorable was the 1980 cigarette smoke-filled appearance of Public Image Ltd.'s John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) and Keith Levene, whose thoroughly uncooperative twelve-minute appearance on the show acquired a long-term notoriety. "Weird Al" Yankovic's first television appearance was on the show in April 1981.
Another notorious segment was a prison interview with mass murderer Charles Manson. Manson was by turns quietly mesmerizing and disturbingly manic, suddenly getting a wild look in his eyes and spouting wild notions at Snyder before temporarily returning to a calm demeanor.[2]
Bizarre moments included a 1979 appearance by Chicago shock-jock Steve Dahl, and a 1980 appearance by the rock band, The Plasmatics, during which lead singer Wendy O. Williams blew up a TV in the studio. The explosion disrupted a live broadcast of NBC Nightly News being produced in a studio two floors above. Snyder himself referred to this occurrence on a 1981 followup appearance in which the Plasmatics demolished a car.
Perhaps the most outrageous interview seen on Snyder's show occurred on Halloween 1979, when the rock band KISS appeared to promote their album, Dynasty. During that 25-minute "interview", the conversation degenerated into a somewhat chaotic exchange between Snyder and a very drunk Ace Frehley, who picked up a teddy bear left behind by another guest, put the armbands from his costume on the bear, and laughed, "the only Spacebear in captivity! I've got him — he's captured!". When Snyder asked Ace if his costume was that of some sort of spaceman, Frehley quipped, "Actually I'm a plumber." Snyder shot back, "If that's the case then I've got some pipe you can work on backstage." The inebriated Frehley clapped his hands and cackled hysterically at the exchange. Years later, Gene Simmons revealed on his website that he felt "betrayed" by the other band members during this interview. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up. Following the break up, Snyder was the very first to have a member of the band — former drummer Peter Criss — appear without makeup in public.
Meanwhile, Letterman had moved on to CBS and was given control of creating a new program to follow his at 12:35 am. Letterman, who had idolized Snyder for years — hired Snyder in 1995 as host of The Late Late Show. The idea had actually begun as a running joke on Letterman's show, that Snyder would soon follow him on the air as he had once followed Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show; the unlikely suggestion caught on. This show aired live on the East Coast and was simulcast to other time zones on radio to allow everyone a chance to call in. Snyder's CNBC show was taken over, largely unchanged in format, by Charles Grodin. One of the many memorable Late Late Show interviews was with Gloria Steinem about the suicide of her son, told dramatically over an entire hour. Another was a lengthy interview with Robert Blake very soon before Blake was charged for murder. In 1999 Snyder left The Late Late Show, which was then reformatted for Craig Kilborn. It has since been turned over to Scottish comedian Craig Ferguson.

Buzzetta August 17, 2007, 03:43 AM Phil Rizzuto
People have remained judgmental about his broadcast career (I was a fan) and his ballplaying career but everyone who has ever known him knew him as a great guy. He had no scandals, no controversies... he simply was a nice guy.
I am 32 and started following the Yankees when my Dad woke me up one night in 1978 to watch the World Series. I was three years old and it remains one of my earliest memories.
I grew up with Rizzotto calling the games and later found out about him as a player.
I honestly was a little choked up when they were talking to Yogi Berra (They have always been close) the other day... and Yogi said "He was the godfather of my kids, he was a great teammate and great player... Yogi's eyes turned red and he paused and said... he was my friend."
Rizzuto was the American Dream... all his live he was told "You will never do this or that..." He persevered through anything and was relentless in his pursuit of his dream. They said he would never play baseball because he was too short. Casey Stengel himself told him to get out of his sight he should shine shoes instead. Rizzuto kept at it and was eventually signed by the Yankees. He became an impact player. When he stopped playing ball they said he would never succeed as a broadcaster. Rizzuto love him or hate him became one of the most famous broadcasters in baseball history.
Phil Rizzuto was a classy guy and a lovable personality that I will always associate with my love of Baseball.

He looks like a very nice man in your sig. :)

almareallymatters September 30, 2007, 09:35 PM I used to drive past the location of his car crash on a regular basis. Very sad. Thanks for the reminder, Alma.
Very sad indeed...
On September 30, 1955, Dean and his mechanic Rolf Wütherich set off from Competition Motors, where they had prepared his Porsche 550 Spyder that morning for a sports car race at Salinas, California. Dean originally intended to trailer the Porsche to the meeting point at Salinas, behind his new Ford Country Squire station wagon, crewed by Hickman and photographer Stanford Roth, who was planning a photo story of Dean at the races. At the last minute, Dean drove the Spyder, having decided he needed more time to familiarize himself with the car. At 3:30PM, Dean was ticketed in Kern County for doing 65 in a 55 mph zone. The driver of the Ford was ticketed for doing 20 mph over the limit, as the speed limit for all vehicles towing a trailer was 45 mph. Later, having left the Ford far behind, they stopped at Blackwell's Corner for fuel and met up with fellow racer Lance Reventlow.
Dean was driving west on U.S. Highway 466 (later California State Route 46) near Cholame, California when a 1950 Ford Tudor, driven from the opposite direction by 23-year-old Cal Poly student Donald Turnupseed, attempted to take the fork onto California State Route 41 and crossed into Dean's lane without seeing him. The two cars hit almost head on. According to a story in the October 1, 2005 edition of the Los Angeles Times,[19] California Highway Patrol officer Ron Nelson and his partner had been finishing a coffee break in Paso Robles when they were called to the scene of the accident, where they saw a heavily-breathing Dean being placed into an ambulance. Wütherich had been thrown from the car, but survived with a broken jaw and other injuries. Dean was taken to Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 5:59PM. His last known words, uttered right before impact, were said to have been "That guy's gotta stop... He'll see us."[20]
Junction of highways 46 and 41Contrary to reports of Dean's speeding, which persisted decades after his death, Nelson said "the wreckage and the position of Dean's body indicated his speed was more like 55 mph (88 km/h)." Turnupseed received a gashed forehead and bruised nose and was not cited by police for the accident. He died of lung cancer in 1995. Rolf Wütherich would die in a road accident in Germany in 1981.
While completing Giant, and to promote Rebel Without a Cause, Dean had recently filmed a short interview with actor Gig Young for an episode of "Warner Bros. Presents"[21] wherein he ad-libbed the popular phrase "The life you save may be your own" instead into "The life you save may be mine."[22] Dean's sudden death prompted the studio to re-film the section, and the piece was never aired - though in the past several sources have referred to the footage, mistakenly identifying it as a public service announcement. (The segment can, however, be viewed on both the 2001 VHS and 2005 DVD editions of Rebel Without a Cause). BMW once made a commercial with the footage of the infamous clip and reconstruction of the crash, which cuts into a scene indicating that Dean would be alive if he had driven one of their models, the commercial was never shown due to poor taste but is aired in programs such as Tarrant on TV.

Last December, daredevil Evel Knievel filed a lawsuit against Kanye West over West's video for "Touch the Sky" in which the rapper plays "Evel Kanyevel" and tries to jump over a canyon on a motorcycle. Knievel claimed West was infringing on his trademark name and likeness and actually said, "That video that Kanye West put out is the most worthless piece of crap I’ve ever seen in my life, and he uses my image to catapult himself on the public."
53NrAbjvL_4
But things are now apparently resolved — Kanye visited Knievel at his Tampa, Florida, home recently to "lay the matter to rest" and to take this awesome picture, sent to us by West's publicist. The expressions on their faces seem to indicate that very little money changed hands.

'Pigeon man' struck, killed by van'
Tribune staff report - December 19, 2007
A Chicago man widely known as "the Pigeon Man of Lincoln Square" was struck and killed by a van Tuesday afternoon on the Far North Side.
Joseph Zeman, 77, whose love of and attentiveness toward pigeons was detailed in a 2004 Tribune article, was hit by a 1992 Chevrolet van at Devon Avenue and McCormick Road about 2:15 p.m., police said.
Zeman of the 2100 block of West Arthur Avenue was pronounced dead at 3:21 p.m. in St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The van was "exiting a parking lot, made a right turn, did not see him and struck him," said Sgt. Antonio Baio of the Chicago police major accident investigation unit.
He said a laminated copy of the Tribune article was found with Zeman, and a witness recognized him.
Zeman used to sit for hours on a fire hydrant near Lawrence and Western Avenues with dozens of pigeons perched on his head, shoulders and legs.
"Soon as I take a seat, they want to be loved and kissed like a mama's baby," Zeman was quoted in the Tribune article. "Like I'm their father, and they're my child."
The driver of the van, a Chicago man, 68, was ticketed for striking a pedestrian in the roadway/failure to exercise due care, negligent driving and driving an unsafe vehicle, Baio said.

somehow her death was not surprising but no less shocking. I do believe that she was trying to make things better for her country.
Yet another example why that area of the country is best left to their own devices. There is no one plan on planet earth that is going to ever stop over 4000 years of infighting between middle eastern tribes.

Cycling star dies after collision
Jason MacIntyre was a British time trial champion
A Scottish cycling champion has died after a collision with a van while training on the A82 in Fort William.
Jason MacIntyre, 34, who broke cycling legend Graham Obree's 10-mile time trial Scottish record last year, died in hospital from his injuries.
He was hoping to make the British Olympic team and his death came a day after he had been given funding to train for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Police said a 35-year-old man had been reported to prosecutors.
They will decide whether any charges should be brought in connection with the incident.
Mr MacIntyre was a triple British and Scottish champion time trial cyclist.
He lived in Fort William with his wife Caroline and eight-year-old twin girls.
He was born in Lochgilphead but had lived in Fort William since the age of 10.
"Jason was a really nice guy, his death is a sad loss to the world of cycling" Craig McLean Olympic cycling medallist
Despite not starting cycling until he was 18, he progressed in the sport, winning the Tour of the North in Ireland at the age of 23.
In 2002, he was selected to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
Mr MacIntyre won the British 25-mile time trial twice and was the first Scot to win the British Circuit race time trial championship.
He took two years away from racing to help his wife following the premature birth of their daughters.
He was airlifted to hospital after the collision at Carrs Corner on the A82 but died on his way to hospital.
Scottish Olympic and world cycling medallist Craig MacLean said: "Jason was a really nice guy, his death is a sad loss to the world of cycling.
"It's very tragic. I think Jason was being considered for the Olympic squad in Beijing later this year and that would have been the pinnacle of his career."
'True champion'
Jackie Davidson, director of Scottish Cycling, the sport's governing body, said: "We are very sad for Caroline and the two girls and our thoughts are with them.
"Jason was a rider with so much talent and potential. Everyone is shocked to hear the news."
Scottish Cycling president Jock Shaw said: "We have lost one of our finest cyclists.
"Jason was a true champion who was always handicapped by geography.
"Here was a young bloke out training and he got killed" John Beattie
BBC Scotland
"His achievements over the last few years proved that he was still improving and we were looking forward to him progressing further."
Scottish Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell said Jason was "one of our finest athletes".
He said: "His death robs Scottish sport of an incredible talent and I would like, on behalf of the Scottish Government, to pass our condolences to his wife and twin daughters."
Tributes are also being paid to Mr MacIntyre on a cycling forum on the internet.
BBC Radio Scotland sports presenter John Beattie, who recently spoke to Mr MacIntyre on his programme, said the death illustrated the risks facing cyclists on Scotland's roads.
He added: "Here was a young bloke out training and he got killed. It just shows to everyone sitting in cars how dangerous it can be to be a cyclist.
"He was a road racer, he broke time trials, and that kind of cyclist needs to train on the roads but with more and more cars on the roads it is more dangerous.
"I have been on his website and he speaks of his love of the sport, he talks of how beautiful it is to be outside cycling in December doing a link that they would normally do in the summer time and how cold it was, how fresh it was, how he was trying to get rid of his Christmas over-indulgence."
Northern Constabulary's road policing section carried out a full investigation at the scene of the accident.

In the 1960s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960s), Melvin played Staff Sergeant Charley Hacker for four seasons on Gomer Pyle, USMC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gomer_Pyle%2C_USMC). He also made appearances as Rob Petrie's old Army buddy, Sol Pomerantz, on the Dick Van Dyke Show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Van_Dyke_Show). Melvin also made eight guest appearances on The Andy Griffith Show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Andy_Griffith_Show) in eight different roles.
Melvin is remembered for supporting roles on two popular 1970s sitcoms. He played Sam Franklin, the owner of a local butcher shop and boyfriend of Alice Nelson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Nelson) (the Bradys' housekeeper) on The Brady Bunch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brady_Bunch), and Barney Hefner, Archie Bunker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archie_Bunker)'s neighbor and friend on All in the Family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_in_the_Family). Some of his most prolific work has been in television commercials, for products as diverse as Kellogg's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kellogg%27s) Sugar Frosted Flakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_Frosted_Flakes) and Remington electric razors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razor). In the latter commercial, he sang a few bars of Frank Loesser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Loesser)'s song "I Believe in You" with a modified lyric.
In the early 1980s, Melvin appeared as a regular in Archie Bunker's Place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archie_Bunker%27s_Place), a successor to All in the Family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_in_the_Family), in which he played a more important role. When this series ended in 1983 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_in_television), Melvin's work was exclusively devoted to cartoon voice-overs.

cornelius blaze March 5, 2008, 10:23 AM Paul Raymond (publisher)
15 November 1925 - 2 March 2008
Paul Raymond was the alias of Geoffrey Anthony Quinn, (15 November 1925 - 2 March 2008).
Born and raised in Liverpool where he attended St. Francis Xavier's College, Raymond and his family were abandoned by his father when he was young. The outbreak of the Second World War prompted their relocation to Glossop in Derbyshire, where he was educated by the Irish Christian Brothers. He changed his name when he tried to break into showbusiness as a mind-reader on Clacton pier at the age of 22.
His self-made fortune came from pornography, property development and ownership of the Raymond Revuebar strip club and several major English erotic magazines such as Razzle, Men Only, Mayfair and the short-lived King. Models featured in his magazines included Fiona Richmond (who became Raymond's girlfriend towards the end of his marriage), Joanne Guest, Shanine Linton, Aria Giovanni and Veronica Zemanova. Raymond regularly appeared on UK rich lists and was widely believed to be a billionaire.
Raymond started out by opening the Raymond Revuebar strip club in the former Doric Ballroom in Soho's Walker's Court in 1958, which was at the time the first British strip club, and continues to the present day as a cabaret venue. [1] He was frequently referred to in the press as the "King of Soho".
In recent years, his fortunes waned due to competition from magazines that were not as explicitly sexual [2]. He began to hand over control of his empire to his daughter Debbie during the early 1990s, until her death in 1992 from an apparently accidental drugs overdose. Raymond also had two sons, the eldest from a relationship prior to his marriage. He was estranged from his ex-wife and younger son. [3]
Raymond long ago diversified beyond pornography, and had many millions tied up in property and real estate, most notably in Soho, through his company, Soho Estates. [4] He was listed at #62 on the Sunday Times Rich List in 2004 and valued at £600 million, although it has been claimed that this was only a fraction of his wealth.[5]
Paul Raymond died, aged 82, from undisclosed causes.

MadameChaos March 27, 2008, 08:26 AM i saw him perform live
when he was past 60
and he was awesome
i had not even come to see him perform
but i thought i heard his voice and said
"Is that James Brown?"
the other people i was with did not care
so i told em
"I'm gonna go check it out."
and slowly i made it to the front, where i could better see him do
'his thing'
which struck me more like a spiritual revival
than merely a performance
he bantered too
and did not seem to mind that most of the crowd did not know his tunes real well
then he played
Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
and i realized
'woa, this aint my music, but its still awesome'
it was one of those
'hey, there really is something called 'objectivity' moments...'
I saw him live too, I wouldn't say I'm a fan but I do like his music. A friend of mine said that he wondered if the people at the funeral kept expecting him to jump up out of the coffin and do a dance (like when he pretends he's too tired on stage). Made me chuckle.

almareallymatters April 10, 2008, 08:18 AM Tributes have been paid to the mother of stabbed schoolboy Damilola Taylor who has died suddenly.
Gloria Taylor dedicated her life to helping underprivileged young people after the death of her son almost eight years ago.
The 57-year-old collapsed after suffering a suspected heart attack while walking near her home in Shooters Hill, south-east London.
Colleagues at the Damilola Taylor Trust, which she founded with husband Richard in 2001, said she had been feeling unwell for more than a week.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said his thoughts and those of "many, many" colleagues were with the Taylor family.
He said: "I'm sure that, like me, many people were moved by the dignified and impressive way that Gloria and Richard Taylor dealt with the tragedy of Damilola's terrible death and the high profile inquiries that followed it.
"I know that their fortitude throughout the three criminal trials, together with their almost unshakeable faith that the truth would be known, was a great comfort and inspiration to Metropolitan Police officers and staff who worked so hard on the investigations."
London Mayor Ken Livingstone, who has worked closely with both Mrs Taylor and her husband Richard, said he was deeply saddened.
He said: "I was always struck by her dignity, courage and determination to give hope and opportunity for young people in London."
Damilola, 10, bled to death on a stairwell on the North Peckham estate in south London in November 2000 after being stabbed in the leg.
bysshe April 10, 2008, 08:45 AM 'Monk' actor Stanley Kamel dies
Associated Press
April 9, 2008
Stanley Kamel, a veteran TV actor who played Adrian Monk's long-suffering psychiatrist on the TV detective show "Monk," died April 8 of a heart attack in his Hollywood Hills home. He was 65.
Kamel had a nearly four-decade acting career, much of it on TV. He had a recurring role as an unscrupulous psychiatrist, Dr. Graham Lester, in the 1995 television series "Murder One" and other recurring roles on "Days of Our Lives," "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills, 90210" as well as smaller roles on many other shows.
Kamel began acting off-Broadway and got his first television break playing Eric Peters on "Days of Our Lives" in the 1970s. He appeared in several movies.
For several years, he portrayed Dr. Charles Kroger on the USA Network series "Monk." As Kroger, he dispensed advice during weekly therapy sessions to Monk (Tony Shalhoub).
"Stanley was an amazingly talented and extremely kind man, and an important member of the USA family. He will be sorely missed," the network said in a statement.
Kamel is survived by his brothers, Stephen and Robert.

The pioneering British electronic music composer Tristram Ogilvie Cary, born Oxford 14 May 1925, has died in Adelaide, Australia on April 24th. If his name does not instantly ring a bell, it will when you know that he composed among other songs the for the British SF-series "Dr Who". While working as a radar engineer for the Royal Navy during World War II, he independently developed his own conception of electronic and tape music based on German Nazi technology, and is regarded as amongst the earliest pioneers of these musical forms.
Following the war he created one of the first electronic music studios, later travelling around Europe to meet the small numbers of other early pioneers of electronic music and composition. Cary was one of the first British composers to work in musique concrète. In 1967 he created the first electronic music studio of the Royal College of Music. Bands inspired by his work include bands like Pink Floyd , The Who and Roxy Music. He also provided the visual design for the EMS VCS3 synthesizer, the first portable synthesizer which Pink Floyd used for their album "Dark Side of the Moon" in 1973.

The Seeker of Good Songs April 30, 2008, 03:44 PM The creator of LSD, Albert Hofmann, is dead at the ripe old age of 102. The man who launched a thousand trips first synthesized the drug in 1938 and then learned of its hallucinatory effects five years later, after accidentally ingesting it.

The Swiss chemist discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 in 1938 while studying the medicinal uses of a fungus found on wheat and other grains at the Sandoz pharmaceuticals firm in Basel. He became the first human guinea pig of the drug when a tiny amount of the substance seeped onto his finger during a laboratory experiment on April 16, 1943. “I had to leave work for home because I was suddenly hit by a sudden feeling of unease and mild dizziness,” he subsequently wrote in a memo to company bosses. “Everything I saw was distorted as in a warped mirror,” he said, describing his bicycle ride home. “I had the impression I was rooted to the spot. But my assistant told me we were actually going very fast.” Upon reaching home, Hofmann began experiencing what he called “wonderful visions.”
Three days later, Hofmann experimented with a larger dose. The result was the world’s first scientifically documented bad trip. “The substance which I wanted to experiment with took over me. I was filled with an overwhelming fear that I would go crazy. I was transported to a different world, a different time,” Hofmann wrote.

The Seeker of Good Songs May 28, 2008, 05:00 PM Earle H. Hagen, who wrote and whistled the theme song of The Andy Griffith Show, died Monday (May 26) in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 88. Hagan's other TV credits include writing the themes for The Dick Van Dyke Show, That Girl, The Danny Thomas Show, I Spy (for which he won an Emmy) and The Mod Squad. He received a 1960 Oscar nomination (shared with Lionel Newman) as musical director for the Marilyn Monroe film, Let's Make Love.
Earle Hagen, a pioneer of television music, best known for his memorable themes for “The Andy Griffith Show,” “I Spy,” “The Mood Squad,” co-author of the jazz classic “Harlem Nocturne,” died Monday of natural causes at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 88.
Hagen and Lionel Newman were nominated for an Academy Award for best music scoring for the 1960 Marilyn Monroe-Yves Montand blockbuster “Let's Make Love.” At the beginning of his Hollywood career, he was Production Arranger for the 1947 film “Down to Earth.” He continued his work and became an orchestrater at 20th Century Fox, his films including the successful “Kiss of Death.” He orchestrated “Nightmare Alley,” “Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!,” followed by “Road House,” “Cry of the City,” “Thieves’ Highway,” “You’re My Everything,” and “Dancing in the Dark.”
For television, he composed original themes for more than 3,000 episodes, pilots and TV movies, including “The Danny Thomas Show,” (also known as “Make Room for Daddy”), “The Ray Bolger Show” and also theme tunes for Sheldon Leonard’s diverse productions like those from the Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith shows. Hagen did the music for hit shows such as “Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.,” “Eight is Enough,” “The Barbara Stanwick Show,” “That Girl,” “The Dukes of Hazard,” “The Bill Dana Show.”
In 2008, Earle Hagen was honoured by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Gold Circle Award for 50 years of outstanding contributions to the medium. Hagen’s most ambitious project was “I Spy,” for which he won an Emmy in 1968.
“There is no question in my mind that Earle Hagen is one of the most important composers in the history of television, if not the most important,” said Jon Burlingame, author of the 1996 book “TV's Biggest Hits,” a chronicle of American television scoring, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“He loved it,” his wife and the love of his life, Lou Hagen, whom he married in 1921, said. “The music just flowed from him, and he would take off one hat and put on another and go on to the next show.”

Harvey Korman dies at 81 years old -4 months after an aneurysm.
Harvey Korman, the tall, versatile comedian who won four Emmys for his outrageously funny contributions to "The Carol Burnett Show" and played a conniving politician to hilarious effect in "Blazing Saddles," died Thursday. He was 81.
Korman died at UCLA Medical Center after suffering complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm four months ago, his family said. He had undergone several major operations.
"He was a brilliant comedian and a brilliant father," daughter Kate Korman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "He had a very good sense of humor in real life. "
A natural second banana, Korman gained attention on "The Danny Kaye Show," appearing in skits with the star. He joined the show in its second season in 1964 and continued until it was canceled in 1967. That same year he became a cast member in the first season of "The Carol Burnett Show."
His most memorable film role was as the outlandish Hedley Lamarr (who was endlessly exasperated when people called him Hedy) in Mel Brooks' 1974 Western satire, "Blazing Saddles."
"A world without Harvey Korman -- it's a more serious world," Brooks told the AP on Thursday. "It was very dangerous for me to work with him because if our eyes met we'd crash to floor in comic ecstasy. It was comedy heaven to make Harvey Korman laugh."
On television, Burnett and Korman developed into the perfect pair with their burlesques of classic movies such as "Gone With the Wind" and soap operas like "As the World Turns" (their version was called "As the Stomach Turns").
Another recurring skit featured them as "Ed and Eunice," a staid married couple who were constantly at odds with the wife's mother (a young Vickie Lawrence in a gray wig). In "Old Folks at Home," they were a combative married couple bedeviled by Lawrence as Burnett's troublesome young sister.
Korman revealed the secret to the long-running show's success in a 2005 interview: "We were an ensemble, and Carol had the most incredible attitude. I've never worked with a star of that magnitude who was willing to give so much away."
Burnett was devastated by Korman's death, said her assistant, Angie Horejsi.
"She loved Harvey very much," Horejsi said.
After 10 successful seasons, Korman left Burnett's show in 1977 for his own series. Dick Van Dyke took his place, but the chemistry was lacking and the Burnett show was canceled two years later. "The Harvey Korman Show" also failed, as did other series starring the actor.
"It takes a certain type of person to be a television star," he said in that 2005 interview. "I didn't have whatever that is. I come across as kind of snobbish and maybe a little too bright. ... Give me something bizarre to play or put me in a dress and I'm fine."
Brooks tapped Korman's kinetic comic chops often, including roles in "High Anxiety," "The History of the World Part I" and "Dracula: Dead and Loving It."
"I gave him tongue twisters because I knew he was the only one who could wrap his mouth around them," Brooks said. "Harvey was such a good solid actor that he could have done Shakespearean drama just as well and easily as he did comedy."
Brooks described Korman as a "dazzling" comic talent.
"You could get rock-solid comedy out of him. He could lift the material. He always made it real, always made it work, always believed in characters he was doing," he said.
Korman's other films included two "Pink Panther" moves, "Trail of the Pink Panther" in 1982 and "Curse of the Pink Panther" in 1983 "Gypsy," "Huckleberry Finn" (as the King), "Herbie Goes Bananas" and "Bud and Lou" (as legendary straightman Bud Abbott to Buddy Hackett's Lou Costello).
In television, Korman guest-starred in dozens of series including "The Donna Reed Show," "Dr. Kildare," "Perry Mason," "The Wild Wild West," "The Muppet Show," "The Love Boat" and "Burke's Law."
In the '70s, he and Tim Conway, one of his Burnett show co-stars, toured the country with their show "Tim Conway and Harvey Korman: Together Again." They did 120 shows a year, sometimes as many as six or eight in a weekend.
Korman had an operation in late January on a non-cancerous brain tumor and pulled through "with flying colors," Kate Korman said. Less than a day after coming home, he was re-admitted because of the ruptured aneurysm and was given a few hours to live. But he survived for another four months.
"He fought until the very end. He didn't want to die. He fought for months and months," said Kate Korman.
Harvey Herschel Korman was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Chicago. He left college for service in the U.S. Navy, resuming his studies afterward at the Goodman School of Drama at the Chicago Art Institute. After four years, he decided to try New York.
"For the next 13 years I tried to get on Broadway, on off-Broadway, under or beside Broadway," he told a reporter in 1971.
He had no luck and had to support himself as a restaurant cashier. Finally, in desperation, he and a friend formed a nightclub comedy act.
"We were fired our first night in a club, between the first and second shows," he recalled.
After returning to Chicago, Korman decided to try Hollywood, reasoning that "at least I'd feel warm and comfortable while I failed."
For three years he sold cars and worked as a doorman at a movie theater. Then he landed the job with Kaye.
In 1960 Korman married Donna Elhart and they had two children, Maria and Christopher. They divorced in 1977. Two more children, Katherine and Laura, were born of his 1982 marriage to Deborah Fritz.
In addition to his daughter Kate, he is survived by his wife and the three other children.

that was Earle H. Hagen Look up this page a bit. I posted on his death. He wrote a lot of tv theme songs.
Regarding the Andy Griffith song...did yuo know there are actual words to that theme song? I have it somewhere. The song is titled "The Fishing Hole"
Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.
What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.
Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.
What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.
If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.
Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.
Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

The Seeker of Good Songs May 30, 2008, 07:08 PM Original 'Star Trek' composer Alexander Courage dies (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/extendedplay/2008/05/original-star-t.html)
Alexander "Sandy" Courage, the man who composed the theme for the original "Star Trek" TV series, died May 15. He was 88.
The Times obituary (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-me-courage30-2008may30,0,3959933.story), written by Dennis McLellan, notes that Courage had been in declining health since 2005. His 54-year career began at CBS Radio in 1946, and through the decades Courage's music could be heard in a string of popular musicals and films, including "Annie Get Your Gun," "Gigi" and "Jurassic Park."
But Courage's best-known work will probably remain the opening them for the 1960s "Star Trek" series, arguably the most recognizable piece of television scoring of all time. Writes McLellan (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-me-courage30-2008may30,0,3959933.story), quoting film music historian John Burlingame :
The eight-note brass fanfare that Courage wrote to herald the starship Enterprise became one of the most familiar musical signatures in TV history.
"I'd argue that it's the most famous fanfare in the world," Burlingame, who teaches film music history at USC, said Thursday. "It's been around 42 years -- and it's all around the world -- and when you hear those eight notes you immediately think of the Enterprise."
Though composer Jerry Goldsmith became associated with the "Star Trek" franchise beginning with the release of the first film in 1979, Courage's original fanfare continued to be linked with the films.

As usual, they have some great acts this year on the main stage, Big Time Sarah, Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Magic Slim & the Teardrops, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Buckwheat Zydeco, BB King, and there are six other stages (with ‘smaller’ acts). Such a good fest and a good time…
RIP, Bo. Rock n’ Roll Heaven has a new headliner.

Actually, we have never been. My husband doesn't like going to live shows or outdoor festivals, and he doesn't like crowds. :( I am going to the Printer's Row Book Fair this weekend, however. I think I'd better plan on taking Metra with so much going on down there this weekend. And the Book Fair is close to LaSalle St. Station.

Ms Himuro was one of the popular chick lit authors in Japan.
I never read her books, but it's very sad to hear that she lost her battle against lung cancer.
Studio Gibri has adopted her book Ocean Waves which will be released in Europe later.
RIP.

Larry Harmon, longtime Bozo the Clown, dead at 83
By JOHN ROGERS – 55 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Larry Harmon, who turned the character Bozo the Clown into a show business staple that delighted children for more than a half-century, died Thursday of congestive heart failure. He was 83.
His publicist, Jerry Digney, told The Associated Press he died at his home.
Although not the original Bozo, Harmon portrayed the popular clown in countless appearances and, as an entrepreneur, he licensed the character to others, particularly dozens of television stations around the country. The stations in turn hired actors to be their local Bozos.
"You might say, in a way, I was cloning BTC (Bozo the Clown) before anybody else out there got around to cloning DNA," Harmon told the AP in a 1996 interview.
"Bozo is a combination of the wonderful wisdom of the adult and the childlike ways in all of us," Harmon said.
Pinto Colvig, who also provided the voice for Walt Disney's Goofy, originated Bozo the Clown when Capitol Records introduced a series of children's records in 1946. Harmon would later meet his alter ego while answering a casting call to make personal appearances as a clown to promote the records.
He got that job and eventually bought the rights to Bozo. Along the way, he embellished Bozo's distinctive look: the orange-tufted hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red, white and blue costume.
"I felt if I could plant my size 83AAA shoes on this planet, (people) would never be able to forget those footprints," he said.
Susan Harmon, his wife of 29 years, indicated Harmon was the perfect fit for Bozo.
"He was the most optimistic man I ever met. He always saw a bright side; he always had something good to say about everybody. He was the love of my life," she said Thursday.
The business — combining animation, licensing of the character, and personal appearances — made millions, as Harmon trained more than 200 Bozos over the years to represent him in local markets.
"I'm looking for that sparkle in the eyes, that emotion, feeling, directness, warmth. That is so important," he said of his criteria for becoming a Bozo.
The Chicago version of Bozo ran on WGN-TV in Chicago for 40 years and was seen in many other cities after cable television transformed WGN into a superstation.
Bozo — portrayed in Chicago for many years by Bob Bell — was so popular that the waiting list for tickets to a TV show eventually stretched to a decade, prompting the station to stop taking reservations for 10 years. On the day in 1990 when WGN started taking reservations again, it took just five hours to book the show for five more years. The phone company reported more than 27 million phone call attempts had been made.
By the time the show bowed out in Chicago, in 2001, it was the last locally produced version. Harmon said at the time that he hoped to develop a new cable or network show, as well as a Bozo feature film.
He became caught up in a minor controversy in 2004 when the International Clown Hall of Fame in Milwaukee took down a plaque honoring him as Bozo and formally endorsed Colvig for creating the role. Harmon denied ever misrepresenting Bozo's history.
He said he was claiming credit only for what he added to the character — "What I sound like, what I look like, what I walk like" — and what he did to popularize Bozo.
"Isn't it a shame the credit that was given to me for the work I have done, they arbitrarily take it down, like I didn't do anything for the last 52 years," he told the AP at the time.
Harmon protected Bozo's reputation with a vengeance, while embracing those who poked good-natured fun at the clown.
As Bozo's influence spread through popular culture, his very name became a synonym for clownish behavior.
"It takes a lot of effort and energy to keep a character that old fresh so kids today still know about him and want to buy the products," Karen Raugust, executive editor of The Licensing Letter, a New York-based trade publication, said in 1996.
A normal character runs its course in three to five years, Raugust said. "Harmon's is a classic character. It's been around 50 years."
On New Year's Day 1996, Harmon dressed up as Bozo for the first time in 10 years, appearing in the Rose Parade in Pasadena.
The crowd reaction, he recalled, "was deafening."
"They kept yelling, `Bozo, Bozo, love you, love you.' I shed more crocodile tears for five miles in four hours than I realized I had," he said. "I still get goose bumps."
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Harmon became interested in theater while studying at the University of Southern California.
"Bozo is a star, an entertainer, bigger than life," Harmon once said. "People see him as Mr. Bozo, somebody you can relate to, touch and laugh with."
Besides his wife, Harmon is survived by his son, Jeff Harmon, and daughters Lori Harmon, Marci Breth-Carabet and Leslie Breth.
