Former Republican N.C. Sen. Jesse Helms dies at 86
7 hours ago
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former Sen. Jesse Helms, who built a career along the fault lines of racial politics and battled liberals, Communists and the occasional fellow Republican during 30 conservative years in Congress, died on the Fourth of July.
He was 86.
Helms died at 1:15 a.m., said the Jesse Helms Center at Wingate University in North Carolina. The center's president, John Dodd, said in a statement that funeral arrangements were pending.
"He was very comfortable," said former chief of staff Jimmy Broughton, who added Helms died of natural causes in Raleigh.
Helms, who first became known to North Carolina voters as a newspaper and television commentator, won election to the Senate in 1972 and decided not to run for a sixth term in 2002.
"Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?" Helms wrote in a 1959 editorial that foretold his political style.
As he aged, Helms was slowed by a variety of illnesses, including a bone disorder, prostate cancer and heart problems, and he made his way through the Capitol on a motorized scooter as his career neared an end. In April 2006, his family announced that he had been moved into a convalescent center after being diagnosed with vascular dementia, in which repeated minor strokes damage the brain.
Helms' public appearances had dwindled as his health deteriorated. When his memoirs were published in August 2005, he appeared at a Raleigh book store to sign copies but did not make a speech.
In an e-mail interview with The Associated Press at that time, Helms said he hoped what future generations learn about him "will be based on the truth and not the deliberate inaccuracies those who disagreed with me took such delight in repeating."
"My legacy will be up to others to describe," he added.
Helms served as chairman of the Agriculture Committee and Foreign Relations Committees over the years at times when the GOP held the Senate majority, using his posts to protect his state's tobacco growers and other farmers and place his stamp on foreign policy.
His opposition to Communism defined his foreign policy views. He took a dim view of many arms control treaties, opposed Fidel Castro at every turn, and supported the contras in Nicaragua as well as the right-wing government of El Salvador. He opposed the Panama Canal treaties that President Jimmy Carter pushed through a reluctant Senate in 1977.
Early on, his habit of blocking nominations and legislation won him a nickname of "Senator No." He delighted in forcing roll call votes that required Democrats to take politically difficult votes on federal funding for art he deemed pornographic, school busing, flag-burning and other cultural issues.
In 1993, when then-President Clinton sought confirmation for an openly homosexual assistant secretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Helms registered his disgust. "I'm not going to put a lesbian in a position like that," he said in a newspaper interview at the time. "If you want to call me a bigot, fine."
After Democrats killed the appointment of U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle, a former Helms aide, to a federal appeals court post in 1991, Helms blocked all of Clinton's judicial nominations from North Carolina for eight years.
Helms occasionally opted for compromise in later years in the Senate, working with Democrats on legislation to restructure the foreign policy bureaucracy and pay back debts to the United Nations, an organization be disdained for most of his career.
And he softened his views on AIDS after years of clashes with gay activists, advocating greater federal funding to fight the disease in Africa and elsewhere overseas.
But in his memoirs, Helms made clear that his opinions on other issues had hardly moderated since he left office. He compared abortion to both the Holocaust and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"I will never be silent about the death of those who cannot speak for themselves," the former senator wrote in "Here's Where I Stand."
Helms never lost a race for the Senate, but he never won one by much, either, a reflection of his divisive political profile in his native state.
He knew it, too. "Well, there is no joy in Mudville tonight. The mighty ultraliberal establishment, and the liberal politicians and editors and commentators and columnists have struck out again," he said in 1990, after winning his fourth term.
He won the 1972 election after switching parties, and defeated then-Gov. Jim Hunt in an epic battle in 1984 in what was then the costliest Senate race on record.
He defeated former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt in 1990 and 1996 in racially tinged campaigns. In the first race, a Helms commercial showed a white fist crumbling up a job application, these words underneath: "You needed that job ... but they had to give it to a minority."
"The tension that he creates, the fear he creates in people, is how he's won campaigns," Gantt said several years later.
Helms also played a role in national GOP politics — supporting Ronald Reagan in 1976 in a presidential primary challenge to then-President Gerald R. Ford. Reagan's candidacy was near collapse when it came time for the North Carolina primary. Helms was in charge of the effort, and Reagan won a startling upset that resurrected his challenge.
During the 1990s, Helms clashed frequently with President Clinton, whom he deemed unqualified to be commander in chief. Even some Republicans cringed when Helms said Clinton was so unpopular he would need a bodyguard on North Carolina military bases. Helms said he hadn't meant it as a threat.
Asked to gauge Clinton's performance overall, Helms said in 1995: "He's a nice guy. He's very pleasant. But ... (as) Ronald Reagan used to say about another politician, `Deep down, he's shallow.'"
Helms went out of his way to establish good relations with Madeleine Albright, Clinton's second secretary of state. But that didn't stop him from single-handedly blocking Clinton's appointment of William Weld — a Republican — as ambassador to Mexico.
Helms clashed with other Republicans over the years, including fellow Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana in 1987, after Democrats had won a Senate majority. Helms had promised in his 1984 campaign not to take the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee, but he invoked seniority over Lugar to claim the seat as the panel's ranking Republican.
He was unafraid of inconveniencing his fellow senators — sometimes all of them at once. "I did not come to Washington to win a popularity contest," he once said while holding the Senate in session with a filibuster that delayed the beginning of a Christmas break. And he once objected to a request by phoning in his dissent from home, where he was watching Senate proceedings on television.
Helms was born in Monroe, N.C., on Oct. 18, 1921. He attended Wake Forest College in 1941 but never graduated and was in the Navy during World War II.
In many ways, Helms' values were forged in the small town where his father was police chief.
"I shall always remember the shady streets, the quiet Sundays, the cotton wagons, the Fourth of July parades, the New Year's Eve firecrackers. I shall never forget the stream of school kids marching uptown to place flowers on the Courthouse Square monument on Confederate Memorial Day," Helms wrote in a newspaper column in 1956.
He took an active role in North Carolina politics early on, working to elect a segregationist candidate, Willis Smith, to the Senate in 1950. He worked as Smith's top staff aide for a time, then returned to Raleigh as executive director of the state bankers association.
Helms became a member of the Raleigh city council in 1957 and got his first public platform for espousing his conservative views when he became a television editorialist for WRAL in Raleigh in 1960. He also wrote a column that at one time was carried in 200 newspapers. Helms also was city editor at The Raleigh Times.
Helms and his wife, Dorothy, had two daughters and a son. They adopted the boy in 1962 after the child, 9 years old and suffering from cerebral palsy, said in a newspaper article that he wanted parents.
AP Special Writer David Espo in Washington contributed to this story.

The Seeker of Good Songs July 22, 2008, 06:08 PM Estelle Getty of 'Golden Girls' dies at age 84
By BOB THOMAS – 22 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.
Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia [Lewy Body Dementia, a progressive brain disease with symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer's disease], died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.
"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."
"The Golden Girls," featuring four female retirees sharing a house in Miami, grew out of NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff's belief that television was ignoring its older viewers.
Three of its stars had already appeared in previous series: Bea Arthur in "Maude," Betty White in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Rue McClanahan in "Mama's Family." The last character to be cast was Sophia Petrillo, the feisty 80-something mother of Arthur's character.

I am a Ghost August 3, 2008, 11:37 PM Nobel prize winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn dies aged 89
The Soviet dissident writer and Nobel literature prize winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn has died aged 89, according to the Interfax news agency.
The agency said he died of a stroke, although his son Stepan Solzhenitsyn said his father died of heart failure. The author had suffered from ill heath, including high blood pressure, in recent years.
Solzhenitsyn served with the Red Army in the Second World War but became one of the most prominent dissidents of the Soviet era, enduring labour camps, cancer and persecution under the Soviet regime.
His experience of the network of labour camps was vividly described in his work One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.
His key works, including "The First Circle" and "Cancer Ward" brought him world admiration and the 1970 Nobel Literature prize.
He was stripped of his citizenship and sent into exile in 1974 after the publication of "The Gulag Archipelago", his monumental history of the Soviet police state. Solzhenitsyn then moved to the United States, returning to post-Soviet Russia as a hero in 1994.
He was born on December 11 1918, studied physics and mathematics at Rostov University and became a Soviet army officer after Hitler's invasion in 1941.

I am a Ghost September 8, 2008, 11:51 AM Mussolini's favourite film star dies...
Little by little, the human connection with the original silent era slips away. Yesterday, Anita Page, who started in films in 1924 and first gained fame starring alongside Joan Crawford in Our Dancing Daughters (1928), died aged ninety-eight. Here’s a report from Associated Press:
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Anita Page, an MGM actress who appeared in films with Lon Chaney, Joan Crawford and Buster Keaton during the transition from silent movies to talkies, has died. She was 98.
Page died in her sleep early Saturday morning at her home in Los Angeles, said actor Randal Malone, her longtime friend and companion.
Page’s career, which spanned 84 years, began in 1924 when she started as an extra.
Her big break came in 1928 when she won a major role — as the doomed bad girl — in “Our Dancing Daughters,” a film that featured a wild Charleston by Crawford and propelled them both to stardom. It spawned two sequels, “Our Modern Maidens” and “Our Blushing Brides.” Page and Crawford were in all three films.
Page’s daughter Linda Sterne said her mother had been good friends with Marion Davies and Jean Harlow, and for about six months in the 1930s lived as a guest in William Hearst’s massive castle on the Southern California coast.
“She was the best mother I could have,” Sterne said. “She was wonderful.”
In 1928, the New York-born Page starred opposite Chaney in “While the City Sleeps.”
The following year, she was co-star of “The Broadway Melody,” the 1929 backstage tale of two sisters who love the same man. The film made history as the first talkie to win the best-picture Oscar and was arguably the first true film musical.
In his 1995 book “A Song in the Dark: The Birth of the Musical Film,” author Richard Barrios reserved much of his praise for Bessie Love, the veteran actress who played the other sister. But he called Page “intensely likable — sincere, well-meaning, endearing, in much the same fashion as Ruby Keeler several years later — and, of course, quite beautiful.”
Variety wrote in 1929 that Page “is also apt to bowl the trade over with a contribution that’s natural all the way, plus her percentage on appearance. … She can’t dance, (but) the remainder of her performance is easily sufficient to make this impediment distinctly negligible.”
Among Page’s other films were two of Keaton’s sound films, “Free and Easy” in 1930, and “Sidewalks of New York” in 1931; “Night Court,” with Walter Huston in 1932; and “The Easiest Way” in 1931, in which Clark Gable had a small role.
For a short time Page was married to composer Nacio Herb Brown, who wrote songs for “The Broadway Melody,” but the marriage was annulled within a year, Sterne said.
Page stopped acting in 1936 when she fell in love with Herschel House, a Navy aviator. The couple married six weeks later and Page happily adapted to life as an officer’s wife, hosting many parties at their home in Coronado, a city peninsula in the San Diego Bay, Sterne said.
The couple had two daughters, Linda and Sandra.
After House died in 1991, Page went on to return to films. In 1994, she appeared in the suspense thriller “Sunset After Dark.”
Most recently, she had a cameo in the horror film “Frankenstein Rising,” due out later this year.
Here's a great article about the Mussolini story..

He also did a study on pre-op lidocaine boluses for GDV patients - that study changed the way I handled those cases and saw an increase on patient survial rate..... And I love his salad dressings. ;):p (:o) Paul was one of the most beautiful movie stars ever, IMO. He aged gracefully...even a hunk into his 80's! And his 50 yr marriage to Joanne Woodward was a real life love story & an inspiration. Very much an admired actor, his legacy is huge. RIP, Paul.

"Mishima" hadn't been released in Japan due to his widow's will.
I watched it on BBC 2 about 12 years ago for the first time.

almareallymatters October 9, 2008, 01:44 PM A man whose childhood battle against leukaemia inspired a surge in bone marrow donors from ethnic minority communities has died.
Daniel de Gale, 21, from Croydon, died from an illness unrelated to cancer.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u258/almareallymatters/_45092782_danieldegale.jpg
When diagnosed with leukaemia, a shortage of black donors meant his odds of finding matching bone marrow were rated as 250,000 to 1.
His mother Beverley, and her partner, Orin Lewis, founded the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust.
A match was found for Daniel in 1999.
This meant that he received a successful bone marrow transplant, and was able to resume a normal life.
This beautiful boy inspired so many of us and we will continue to illuminate the path, with his light, so others may be guided to safety
In 1993, when his leukaemia was first spotted, there were only a few hundred donors registered with the Anthony Nolan Trust whose ethnic background meant they could possibly provide a match.
The charity's work, in partnership with the Anthony Nolan Trust, has been given much of the credit for a sharp rise in new donors coming forward.

Thanks. I feel very lucky to have been there to hear them. She hadn't been able to speak for about a day. She was on oxygen and gasping for every breath. But myself, my mom and her 3 sisters were all gathered around her telling her how much we loved her and it was ok for her to go. And out of nowhere she forced out "I love you" 2 times in a row. It was amazing and powerful to see. Now I'm crying just thinking of it but I know she's doing well no. As my 7 year old cousin summed it up "The good thing is, there's now cancer in heaven".

No matter how much you imagine these things, nothing really prepares you for the reality. It sounds like she had loads of people around who loved her, which is so important.
I think it's quite a rare thing in life to get that kind of closure where you can tell people what they mean to you before the event. I have managed that only once in my life and it really helps the grieving process.

I am a Ghost November 6, 2008, 11:15 PM Jimmy Carl Black: Drummer and vocalist with The Mothers of Invention
Thursday, 6 November 2008
'I got famous but I damn sure didn't get rich': Black in 1975
"Hi boys and girls, I'm Jimmy Carl Black, and I'm the Indian of the group". This was how the drummer and occasional singer with the original line-up of The Mothers of Invention would introduce himself on stage and on record.
Led by the guitarist, composer and singer Frank Zappa, this incarnation of the Mothers, as they were known, to the dismay of their record label MGM, released five ground-breaking albums and three compilations between 1966 and 1970. Zappa and his cohorts waged "a war against apathy", asking "Who Are The Brain Police?" on their 1966 debut album, the double-set Freak Out! Then, when all around them were singing about peace and love, they turned on the hippies and took a caustic, contrary stance with We're Only in it for the Money in 1968. Not only did the lyrics to "Who Needs The Peace Corps?" lampoon the flower power movement – the line "I will love the police as they beat the shit out of me on the streets" was only reinstated on the CD reissue in 1986 – but the gatefold sleeve was a pastiche of the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with the dress-wearing, long-haired and moustachioed Black at its centre.
"I didn't like that dress 'cause it didn't fit but I thought it was a great picture," the drummer said in a recent interview. "We weren't the first band to do a picture in drag, the Rolling Stones were. If it was good enough for them, then it had to be good enough for us. I had no idea that We're Only in it for the Money would be considered a classic piece of musical history and I don't think Frank did either."
Black sang lead on the "Big Leg Emma" single in 1967 and also played on the albums Absolutely Free (1967), Lumpy Gravy – nominally a Zappa solo project (1968) – the doo-wop homage Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (also 1968) and Uncle Meat (1969) as well as the compilations Mothermania (1969), Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh (both 1970). He featured on many subsequent releases from the Zappa archives and appeared in Zappa's movie 200 Motels (1971) as "Lonesome Cowboy Burt". He enjoyed filming 200 Motels in the UK, especially since two of his favourite drummers, Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, were involved.
Though Zappa led two more incarnations of The Mothers in the Seventies, the original personnel helped fashion the experimental sound and inventive style the composer explored throughout his career. "It was a challenge but I loved it," Black said. "He [Frank] very patiently taught me how to play all those rhythms and time signatures. He knew I could do it."
Away from Zappa, the drummer worked with Geronimo Black, a short-lived group he formed with Bunk Gardner of The Mothers, with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, appearing with them at the 1975 Knebworth festival, with the British vocalist Arthur Brown, and with the avant-garde instrumentalist Eugene Chadbourne. He also played Zappa's music with various Mothers alumni in The Grandmothers and toured with The Muffin Men, the Liverpool group who revisit Zappa and Beefheart material.
Born James Inkanish Jnr in 1938 to Native American parents, he was adopted by Carl Black, who his mother married the following year. He grew up in Texas and played the piano as a child, but took up the trumpet in his teens and was the soloist in his school band. He switched to drums after seeing Elvis Presley in concert and enlisted in the US Air Force in 1958.
In 1964, he moved to Los Angeles, fell in with the bassist Roy Estrada and the vocalist Ray Collins and formed The Soul Giants. Zappa replaced their original guitarist and assumed leadership of the group, renaming it The Mothers.
"Frank was kind of freaky-looking, but I liked him a lot," Black recalled. "Frank said, 'If you guys learn my music, I'll make you rich and famous'. He took care of half that promise. I got famous, but I damn sure didn't get rich!"
Within a year, the group secured a deal with Verve after they were spotted performing "Trouble Every Day" at the Whisky-A-Go-Go. By the time they recorded Freak Out! they had evolved far from their roots as a cover band and were taking pot shots at the emptiness of American culture and consumerism. Their mélange of jazz, rhythm 'n' blues, rock, sound collages and musique concrète went against the grain of most pop music in the Sixties but, much like their label-mates the Velvet Underground, they have proved hugely influential. In particular, they informed the skewed, satirical world view of the Simpsons creator Matt Groening and strongly influenced the European underground in the late Sixties and early Seventies.
Despite a residency in New York through much of 1967, and a successful European tour the following year – which included an appearance on the BBC television show Colour Me Pop – the Mothers, whose line-up had swelled to a nine-piece, broke up in 1969 under the financial strain and Zappa's dictatorial approach.
"Frank was the BOSS," Black said. "There were no arguments about music because if you did, he would show you where the door was. Period. We just got a phone call from him stating that he had decided to break up the band and your salary has ended as of last week. That is pretty cold in my opinion, after all the loyalty we had given him through the years of starving for his music."
Following the failure of Geronimo Black he went back to Texas in 1973 and worked in a doughnut factory while playing the odd gig with The Valley Loboys. In 1980, he guested on five tracks on Zappa's You Are What You Is, including "I Don't Want To Get Drafted" and a revival of the Lonesome Cowboy Burt character on "Harder Than Your Husband" – "I even got paid," Black quipped.
He subsequently hooked up with Brown to perform as well as run a painting company in Austin called The Gentlemen of Color. "We would paint anything that didn't move – but mostly houses," he said. "We painted a shitload of them, and sometimes people who knew who we were from the old days would have us sign the house after the job was done."
In the mid-Nineties, Black moved to Europe and lived in Italy and Germany. He toured with Chadbourne and various incarnations of the Grandmothers and also played with the Muffin Men as well as making sandstone sculptures. A charity concert in his memory will be held at the Bridge House 2 in Canning Town, London, on 9 November.

Oliver Postgate, creator of The Clangers and Bagpuss, dies at 83
Last updated at 9:36 AM on 09th December 2008
Oliver Postgate, the creator of The Clangers, Bagpuss and a series of other classic children's television programmes, has died at the age of 83.
Mr Postgate's other creations, including Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine and Pingwings, were screened on the BBC and ITV from the 1950s.
His creations were made by Smallfilms, the company he set up with the artist and puppeteer Peter Firmin, and he also narrated all its productions.
The first episode of The Clangers was broadcast on the BBC in November 1969.
A further 25 episodes were made and a final election special was screened in October 1974.
The stop-motion animated series featured a number of small, pink creatures who spoke in whistles and lived in harmony on a small planet.
Only 13 episodes of Bagpuss were made in 1974, but the pink 'saggy, old, cloth cat' was regularly screened until 1987 and remains fondly remembered.
Earlier this year Bagpuss was voted Britain's best-loved children's television character.
Mr Postgate's partner, Naomi Linnell, confirmed he died at a nursing home near his home in Broadstairs, Kent, yesterday.
Born in Hendon, Middlesex, Mr Postgate set up Smallfilms in a disused cowshed near Canterbury after spending his early years in a number of different jobs.
Mr Postgate made his last film in 1987.
In October this year, the rights to many of his creations, including Bagpuss, The Clangers and Ivor the Engine, were acquired by media company Coolabi in a £400,000 deal.
In an interview with the BBC in 2005, Mr Postgate explained the process of how Bagpuss and some of his other characters came into being.
He said: 'We would go to the BBC once a year, show them the films we'd made, and they would say "Yes, lovely, now what are you going to do next?"
'We would tell them and they would say "That sounds fine, we'll mark it in for 18 months from now", and we would be given praise and encouragement and some money in advance.
'And we'd just go away and do it. They hadn't any ideas in their heads, and they were happy enough to leave that to us.'
In 1957, Mr Postgate married Prudence Myers, becoming stepfather to her three children, and the couple later had twins and another son. Mrs Myers died in 1982.
An active figure in the anti-nuclear campaign during the 1970s and 1980s, Mr Postgate was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Kent in 1987.
His autobiography, Seeing Things, was published in 2000 in which he charted his life from childhood to frustrated writer, political activist and inventor

Pop singer Dave Dee dies aged 65
Dave Dee (pictured) had eight top 10 hits with Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich
British pop star Dave Dee has died at the age of 65, following a three-year battle with cancer.
The singer continued playing gigs with band members Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich until close to the end of his life, record plugger Sean Cooney said.
"He didn't let it get him down. He was defying it," Mr Cooney added.
The group had eight top 10 hits, including a UK number one single in 1968 with The Legend of Xanadu, in which Dee famously cracked a whip.
A spokeswoman for the family said that Dee died in Kingston Hospital in Surrey on Friday morning following "a long and courageous battle" with cancer.
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich - named after the five friends' nicknames - first entered the UK chart in December 1965 with You Make it Move, which peaked at number 26.
Subsequent singles included Hold Tight!, Bend It! and Save Me.
Between 1965 and 1969 they spent more weeks in the UK singles charts than any other band.
Two of their albums charted - their eponymous debut, in 1966, followed a year later by If Music Be the Food of Love... Prepare for Indigestion.
Charity work
In 1969 Dee left the group for a short-lived solo career, but they reformed in the 1990s with Dee as lead vocalist once again.
They had recently been performing dates in the UK and Germany and were due to play another eight concerts before the end of April.
The Legend of Xanadu helped the group to find success in the US
Dee performed his last gig in Eisenburg, Germany on 20 September last year.
The singer, whose real name was David Harman, came from Wiltshire and was originally a police officer before turning his hand to music.
In the 1970s he was a founding committee member of the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity and was actively involved in fundraising and increasing the profile of the organisation, for more than 30 years.
He later worked as a magistrate in Cheshire.
He is survived by his wife Joanne, daughter Olivia, twin sons Ashley and Elliot, and by Lesley, his partner during his final two years.

Last updated at 4:22 PM on 12th January 2009
David Vine, who hosted A Question Of Sport, has died of a heart attack aged 73
Veteran sports broadcaster David Vine has died of a heart attack aged 73.
Vine fronted a huge list of shows, including It's A Knock Out, Miss World, the Eurovision Song Contest, Wimbledon, Match Of The Day, Grandstand and the Olympics.
He also hosted A Question Of Sport and Ski Sunday.
Vine, who celebrated his birthday earlier this month, died last night at his home near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
He had triple heart by-pass surgery several years ago.
His publicist Paul Madeley said that since Vine's retirement he remained working as a consultant for the BBC.
He described Vine as 'a true and utter gentleman at all times.
He said: 'I don't know of anybody who is regarded as he was in terms of his professionalism and dedication, whether he was presenting or commentating.
'He was like a member of my family. He was that close.'
Vine, who was from Devon, worked on various newspapers as well as for ITV and the BBC.
Affectionately known for his spectacles and jumpers in the 1970s, Vine also worked on The Superstars.
With his knack for improvisation, Vine spent a quarter of a century working on the major snooker tournaments.
According to the BBC, 18 million people watched as 'Viney' waited until the early hours of the morning to interview Dennis Taylor after his epic win against Steve Davis in 1985.
Vine tackled John McEnroe after an outburst at Wimbledon, asking him: 'What right have you got to call anyone an incompetent fool?'
Vine told the BBC: 'He told me he'd never talk to me again after that but he did the following day.'
According to Mr Madeley, in more recent years Vine had been a possible contender to commentate on Dancing On Ice, but he decided that 'quite a lot of time was required'.
He leaves behind three children from his first marriage - Kim, Martin and Katherine.
His first wife died and he married again in 1972 and they had a son named Christian.
Vine had four grandchildren - Ben, Georgia, Oliver and Emily.
Mr Madeley, who had represented Vine for nearly 20 years, said he had a lengthy conversation with him at his recent birthday celebrations.
He said his health had not been good in recent times, as he had had a hip replacement as well as the heart surgery.
Mr Madeley said of the hip replacement: 'That was successful, but not 100%. It was something that was getting there.'
Vine's last big job for the BBC before he retired was covering the weightlifting for the 2000 Olympics.
Announcing his retirement from presenting 40 years of television sport, Vine said: 'I've got to go some time, and now is the right time.'
While Vine's expertise was still drawn upon in his retirement, he also kept himself busy designing and renovating, Mr Madeley said.

Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in splashy MGM musicals and later as Mr. Roarke in TV's "Fantasy Island," died Wednesday morning at age 88.
updated 4:34 p.m. ET Jan. 14, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in splashy MGM musicals and later as the wish-fulfilling Mr. Roarke in TV’s “Fantasy Island,” died Wednesday morning at his home, his family said. He was 88.
Montalban’s death was first announced at a city council meeting by president Eric Garcetti, who represents the district where the actor lived. He died “from complications of advancing age,” his son-in-law, Gilbert Smith, later said.
“He was so gracious, and Aaron was always humbled by Ricardo’s gratitude for ’Fantasy Island,” said Candy Spelling, wife of the late Aaron Spelling, who created the show. “I miss him already, and wish his family well.”
Montalban had been a star in Mexican movies when MGM brought him to Hollywood in 1946. He was cast in the leading role opposite Esther Williams in “Fiesta,” and starred again with the swimming beauty in “On an Island with You” and “Neptune’s Daughter.”
But Montalban was best known as the faintly mysterious, white-suited Mr. Roarke, who presided over a tropical island resort where visitors fulfilled their lifelong dreams — usually at the unexpected expense of a difficult life lesson. “I am Mr. Roarke, your host. Welcome to Fantasy Island,” he told arriving guests.
Montalban had already coined a cultural catchphrase before the show, which ran from 1978 to 1984. As the celebrity spokesman for mid-1970s models of the Chrysler Cordoba, Montalban unwittingly opened himself up to endless imitation when he described the car’s optional seats as being “available in soft, Corinthian leather.”
More recently, he appeared as villains in two hits of the 1980s: “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan” and — in line with his always-apparent sense of humor about himself — the farcical “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.”
‘He was just a marvelous human being’
Montalban’s longtime friend and publicist David Brokaw said the actor was “exactly how you’d imagine him to be” off camera. “What you saw on the screen and on television and on talk shows, this very courtly, modest, dignified individual, that’s exactly who he was,” Brokaw said.
Raul Yzaguirre, longtime president of National Council of La Raza, called Montalban “a hero” and noted the actor’s contributions to his community. Montalban helped found the ALMA Awards, which honor and encourage fair portrayals of Latinos in entertainment.
“He was just a marvelous human being and an inspiration to be around,” Yzaguirre said. “I hope his spirit pervades more of Hollywood — the spirit of humility and excellence and giving back to the community and just plain decency.”
Between movie and TV roles, Montalban was active in the theater. He starred on Broadway in the 1957 musical “Jamaica” opposite Lena Horne, picking up a Tony nomination for best actor in a musical.
Montalban also toured in Shaw’s “Don Juan in Hell,” playing Don Juan, a performance critic John Simon later recalled as “irresistible.” In 1965 he appeared on tour in the Yul Brynner role in “The King and I.”
“Fantasy Island” received high ratings for most of its run on ABC, and still appears in reruns. Mr. Roarke and his sidekick, Tattoo, played by the 3-foot, 11-inch Herve Villechaize, reached the state of TV icons. Villechaize died in 1993.

Rumpole of the Bailey creator John Mortimer dies
* Alison Flood
* The Guardian, Friday 16 January 2009
* Article history
Rumpole of the Bailey creator John Mortimer, 85, died this morning following a prolonged illness. His family said in a statement that they were by his side when he passed away.
Mortimer, who lived in what was formerly his father's house in the Chilterns, had been in a London hospital until a few days before Christmas before coming home, after which his condition deteriorated, said Tony Lacey, Mortimer's editor at Penguin.
The novelist, playwright and former barrister, who was born in London in 1923, was known and loved for the comic lawyer Rumpole, whose dedication to cheap wine and motto "never plead guilty", has been his most enduring creation. "He would announce to me on the phone that he thought he ought to 'do a Rumpole' on asbos or weapons of mass destruction, or some similar topic about which he felt particularly strongly. Rumpole and John became increasingly fused," said Lacey. Mortimer originally wrote the series for television, later spinning it off into a series of books and radio programmes.
Up until his death he was producing more than one book a year, with his confinement to a wheelchair not stopping him from touring a one-man show around the country.
His time as a barrister saw him representing many divorce clients and murderers, with his famous court appearances including the radical magazine Oz's censorship trial, the Linda Lovelace so-called Deep Throat case and numerous others involving alleged pornography. "I found criminal clients easy and matrimonial clients hard," he said. "Matrimonial clients hate each other so much and use their children to hurt each other in beastly ways. Murderers have usually killed the one person in the world that was bugging them and they're usually quite peaceful and agreeable."
His friend, the novelist Margaret Drabble, said today: "He was a great fighter, a great figure, and his record in defending literature and attacking censorship was absolutely brilliant. And he did it with such good humour - it was very hard to get cross with John. He was so unpompous about his defence of literature."
Indeed, his writing always seemed more of a vocation than his legal work, which he said was much harder than being a lawyer, despite having less disastrous results. "If you write a bad book, no one goes to prison which is rather a relief."
Mortimer worked with the Crown Film Unit during the war, writing a number of novels before turning to the theatre. He has also written a range of film scripts, and plays for television and radio, including A Voyage Around My Father, an adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, and the Rumpole plays, which won the British Academy Writer of the Year Award.
He wrote a trilogy of political novels about the rise of an ambitious Tory MP - Paradise Postponed, Titmuss Regained and The Sound of Trumpets, as well as four volumes of autobiography, receiving a knighthood for his services to the arts in 1998.
"John didn't believe in the afterlife. He borrowed a joke of his father's that eternity sounded frightfully like spending every day in the lounge of a Trusthouse Forte hotel," said Lacey. "I wouldn't wish the hotel lounge on him of course – he would find it torture, he was so easily bored – but it's hard to think he's gone. At least we're lucky enough to have Rumpole to remind us just how remarkable he was."
The author - who would start writing at around 5am, regularly having a glass of champagne first thing in the morning - said that "No one should grow old who isn't ready to appear ridiculous". "Dying," he opined, "is a matter of slapstick and prat falls".
"Even though he was so ill, there was still a great sense of shock when I learned of his death - at some level he seemed indestructible. He was always fantastically upbeat and funny, full of stories - but there was a measure of self-doubt there, underneath all the charm and confidence, about his literary status and how he would finally be seen," Tony Lacey, his editor of many years at Penguin books said. "He was forever asking 'how am I doing? Is it time for me to give up?'"
"He was the last of the great lunchers, a real throw back to the glory days of the 70s and 80s in publishing, I used his name shamelessly to get the best seats at The Ivy or Sheekey's. He was terrifically well informed, an avid news consumer, and if I arrived late for lunch he would always be buried in Private Eye, reading it from cover to cover - and he always knew more than was printed, about any story."
"For me he was the dream author, forever anxious to get onto the next project. He was working on another Rumpole, to be called Rumpole and the Younger Generation, which unusually was to be set in Oxford. When I last saw him, four or five days before Christmas in hospital, he assured me he was determined to get on with it. He had finally started to dictate it because his eyesight had got so bad - he had always written in longhand and his handwriting was diabolical, indescribable - and I was amazed at how fluent it was. He had completed three or four chapters, it was shaping up very well, very nicely plotted - and it's a great shame that we now will never see the book."

I am a Ghost January 20, 2009, 12:24 PM Kathleen Byron: Actress who played Sister Ruth in 'Black Narcissus'
Tuesday, 20 January 2009
Few actresses are so identified with one role as Kathleen Byron, who will always be remembered foremost as the passionate, wildly neurotic nun Ruth in the Powell-Pressburger masterpiece, Black Narcissus (1947). Driven mad with repression and her hopeless love for the District Commissioner (David Farrar) in a remote Himalayan convent, she piles on the lipstick and puts on a clinging red dress before trying to push Deborah Kerr to her death from the convent's bell-tower. Such displays of eroticism were rare in British films, and the effectiveness of the scene, and Byron's performance, gave her a reputation as one of the screen's great bad ladies.
Later she memorably menaced Margaret Lockwood (herself no slouch at being wicked) in Madness of the Heart (1949), but her versatility was recognised by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, who cast her as a young schoolteacher in occupied Holland undermining the enemy by telling her pupils of the 1628 resistance hero Piet Hein, in The Silver Fleet (1943), as an angel in A Matter of Life and Death (1946), and notably in The Small Back Room (1948), in which, as the understanding sweetheart of an alcoholic bomb-disposal expert (Farrar again), she displayed qualities of devotion and intelligence that were every bit as convincing as her malevolent nun.
She was at her best, though, when formidably resilient and strong-willed, such as in her role as the manipulative Italian promoter of a boy prodigy conductor (Jeremy Spencer) in Prelude to Fame (1950). She displayed such traits frequently in British "B" films of the Fifties, such as My Death Is a Mockery (1952), in which she was a smuggler's wife, and her prolific career also embraced television and stage (including a spell in the long-running Agatha Christie mystery The Mousetrap). Admiration for her work prompted Steven Spielberg, a Powell-Pressburger enthusiast, to cast her as the mother of the missing soldier Ryan in his ambitious war movie, Saving Private Ryan (1998).
Born in London in 1922, to parents her daughter described as "staunch working-class socialists" who later became Mayors of East Ham, she turned down her place to read languages at London University when she won an acting scholarship to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She made her screen debut with an uncredited bit part as a model in Climbing High (1938), starring Jessie Matthews, but had her first speaking role (two lines, as a maid) in Carol Reed's The Young Mr Pitt (1942). She told the historian Brian McFarlane, "While still at drama school, I came up to London to find an agent, and I met John Gliddon, who was Deborah Kerr's agent, and he sent me to the people who were doing The Young Mr Pitt. They gave me a part and after that I used to go around saying, 'I had two lines opposite Robert Donat.' I did very little after that because of the war and I was working for Censorship."
Byron appeared in several wartime shorts for the Crown Film Unit, and in 1943 she played her first substantial film role in The Silver Fleet, the first of her four consecutive films for Powell and Pressburger. She played the angel in A Matter of Life and Death (Powell later described her role as "enchantingly grave"), the neurotic nun in Black Narcissus, and then the heroine of The Small Back Room.
"When I was offered Black Narcissus, Michael Powell sent me a telegram saying, 'We're offering you the part of Sister Ruth; the trouble is, you'll never get such a good part again!' He was more or less right." Though Byron was rumoured to have had an affair with Powell, she found him a tough director. "He used to put people down and upset them. Looking back at the way he directed, I realise that he was determined to get something from you and didn't mind how he did it. At the time, I always used to fight with him. He wanted me to overstate the madness of Sister Ruth, and I used to argue with him that the character didn't know she was mad... Deborah Kerr used to whisper to me, 'Don't argue with him, just say, 'Oh, what a marvellous idea' and then do exactly what you want to do.'"
Byron enjoyed the contrasting role given her in The Small Back Room.
"I enjoyed playing that un-neurotic character because she had a nice lot of strength. I nearly lost the part because of censorship – you couldn't have two people living together, and that was the whole thrust of the story, that he wouldn't marry her because he was not happy with himself."
Byron enhanced her shrewish reputation on screen with Madness of the Heart, in which she was pathologically jealous of Margaret Lockwood, a blind girl who has won the heart of the rich Frenchman (Paul Dupuis) at whom Byron had set her cap. When Lockwood carefully checks the position of her wine glass on the piano beside which she makes a toast to her ball guests, Byron slyly moves it so that Lockwood will knock it over and lose her confidence. In a splendid climactic sequence she leads Lockwood to a non-existent door of a chateau (actually an opening through which there is a sheer drop to the cliffs below) unaware that Lockwood has had an operation to restore her sight. "So you can see," she hisses.
A less than cordial off-set relationship with Lockwood possibly added to the effectiveness of such scenes, but her convincing villainy had its drawbacks – she later claimed that two trips to Hollywood resulted in only one role (in Young Bess) because she was perceived as an actress specialising in neurotic monsters. But she was a delightfully feisty Duchess of Devonshire in I'll Never Forget You (1951, made in the UK, where it was titled The House on the Square), a time-travel romance in which Tyrone Power's atomic physicist is transported to the 18th century and falls in love with Ann Blyth. She was also effective as a university professor's daughter whose latent passions are aroused by a sadistic killer (Laurence Harvey) in The Scarlet Thread (1951), one of several "B" movies in which she starred.
When such product began to be phased out in the Sixties, Byron became a familiar figure on television, her many appearances including roles in Emergency Ward 10, Danger Man, The Avengers, Callan, Secret Army (two episodes, as Madame Celeste Lekeu), Emmerdale Farm and Midsomer Murders. When she played a murder suspect in the show Crown Court, in which a panel had to bring in a "live" verdict, her reputation was such that the jury decided before hearing any evidence that she did it.
Her final screen role was that of old Mrs Ryan in Saving Private Ryan, and her last television role was in Stephen Poliakoff's Perfect Strangers (2001), after which ill-health forced her to turn down the role of Lauren Bacall's sister in Lars Von Trier's Dogville.

I am a Ghost April 10, 2009, 02:48 PM Comedian Lennie Bennett dead at 70 after a fall at home
Comedian and TV game show host Lennie Bennett has died at the age of 70.
He failed to recover after a fall at his house in Thornton, near Blackpool.
At the peak of his career Bennett presented TV shows including Punchlines, Celebrity Squares and Lucky Ladders, as well as partnering Jerry Stevens on the BBC's Lennie and Jerry Show.
Lennie, who real name was Mike Berry, went into showbusiness after starting his career as a reporter on a local newspaper.
When he was sent out to interview the stars of the summer shows in Blackpool, he would tell them jokes.
He burst on to the scene in the early 1970s with regular performances on Saturday Variety and a frequent panellist on Joker's Wild.
He would make appearances as a participant on shows including Star Turn, Blankety Blank and All Star Secrets.
The successful Punchlines show ran for 150 shows, and during his heyday Lennie became famous for his mop of tightly-curled hair.
He performed in 12 Royal Variety Shows, and had a brief stint as host of his own chat show Bennett Bites Back on London Weekend Television in 1982.
The star, who was divorced, was also a big success on the after-dinner speaking circuit and a keen golfer. He was featured in a 2004 television programme running a burger bar in Blackpool called Fat B'Stards.
Blackpool-based comedian Frank Carson paid tribute. He told the Blackpool Gazette: 'Lennie was an absolutely wonderful fellow and we had lots of laughs together.
'He was a very funny comedian and a very good performer.'
Fellow TV star Keith Harris said: 'Lennie was a very, very good comic and quite before his time.
'He'll be making them laugh up there in heaven. I'd say he was the first alternative comic, a kind of Jimmy Carr of his day.'
Former Catchphrase presenter Roy Walker added: 'Lennie was very much his own man who was a huge name on television for a long time.
'He was a cheeky, quirky comic who will be sadly missed.'
