View Full Version : Ludus
nightandday November 5, 2006, 01:43 PM I noticed on the 'Music you got into throught Morrissey' thread that there were a few Ludus fans here, so I thought I start a little chat... I don't usually get a chance to do that, there aren't that many Ludus fans around.
What are your favourite songs?
Does anyone have any of the original records?
What do you think of "Danger Came Smiling", do you find it unlistenable or do you like it?
And can anyone figure out what she's singing in "Too Hot To Handle"? Not the chorus, that can be heard very well ("I ask for bread, and he gives me stones...") but the rest of the song. The vocals are completely drowned by the guitar and rhythm section, I hate when that happens with live recordings.
nightandday November 5, 2006, 02:47 PM I particularly like 'Let me go where my pictures go' and 'She She'. This is a band who were well ahead of their time, unconventional and challenging, like music should be. Linder has a very strong personality. Sadly, there aren't many women left in the music business who have that. Instead, we have insufferable bores like Britney Spares who get their boobies out for money. Please put them away, you trailer trash!
Well, there was always bland pop and there were always women who became extremely popular by showing their boobs and 'singing' (or rather opening their mouths to produce some crappy noise) some mindless nonsense other people have written for them. It's hardly something new. The 80s were awful in that respect - I was very little, but I remember Samantha Fox and Sabrina. There are women with interesting music and attitude now just as they were in the early 80s, but usually away from the mainstream pop.
I love P.J.Harvey and The Dresden Dolls. Cat Power makes interesting music, too, though I'm not a fan of weak girly voices :) I loved Goldfrapp in the beginning, "Felt Mountain" is one of my all-time favourite albums, but I don't like their last 2 albums and the direction they've taken. Not a particular fan of Bjork's voice either, but she definitely is very original as a personality and as a musician, and she has made some wonderful music. Too bad that Kathleen Hanna's music, with Bikini Kill or Le Tigre, just isn't my cup of tea. Do you know the Canadian singer-songwriter Lhasa de Sela? I've become interested when I heard her song "Anywhere On This Road" on radio, especially because of this verse: "I love a man who is afraid of me/he thinks if he doesn't stand guard with a knife/I'll make him my slave for the rest of his life". One of the best, truest lines I've ever heard on male-female relations.
On the subject of Ludus, to answer my own questions:
My favourite songs:
Mirror Mirror (studio version)
Mother's Hour
Patient
Herstory
The Fool
The Escape Artist
Let Me Go Where My Pictures Go
Too Hot To Handle
What A Falling Off Was There
Unveiled (A Woman's Travelogue)
See The Keyhole
Sightseeing
Lullaby Cheat
Mutilate
and so on, I like all of them. Obviously, I like the poppy ones as well as some of the more improvisional ones.
I was put off by DCS at first - I was disappointed because there weren't any 'proper songs' on it. But now I actually find myself listening to it quite often, and I like about 70% of it (particularly the tracks Invasion of Compulsory Sex-Morality, Flogging Cully, I Stabbed At The Sheep, Mememoremee, Mistresspiece, Bloody Chamber, Bitch Party, Howling Comique, Centuries). But it would be better without a few really boring ones, if you remove Palace Of Thieves (8 minute of pointless boredom) and another track or two, it would make the album twice shorter and much better.
Apart from the CDs, I have the original vinyl single "My Cherry Is In Sherry". But I also have all the mp3s taken from the vinyl and scans of original artwork for "Mother's Hour" and "Pickpocket" (thanx to Soulseek :) )
dallow_bg November 5, 2006, 03:04 PM I own most, or all of the official CDs.
I like it alright, I feel it's a little too 'artsy'.
From what I've read about their live shows, she tried really hard to shock people. That bores me.
Don't listen to them much.

There are 3 reissue CDs.
I think that it's just one show - the one in Hacienda in 1982 - that everyone keeps talking about. I've never heard anything especially shocking being mentioned about any of their other shows. And it seems she definitely managed to shock people that time. I don't think they were bored. :D
Strange Fear March 14, 2007, 07:50 AM I know this thread is kind of old, but I barely saw it today.:o I like Ludus a lot. I haven't heard all of their stuff, but from the uploads that you've put nightandday, I now really like them, so thank you
These are the songs I've heard.
Patient
The Fool

I feel that way too, it's very interesting how her personality can just captivate you. She has a beautiful voice and a very optomistic view towards life. I don't see many people like that anymore.:(
Miss Hanna March 14, 2007, 08:38 PM I love Ludus :)
Linder Sterling is amazing!
I highly recomend The Damage to everyone!:)
Does anyone know a website with their lyrics?

:D Most of the Ludus lyrics on songmeanings were posted by myself, apart from Little Girls. That one was posted by Lindsay, who sometimes posts here, her username is Laika. She transcribed the lyrics as she heard them. I also transcribed most of the lyrics. The only lyrics you can be sure about are Mother's Hour and Patient, and some parts of The Fool and Mouthpiece, because I took them from the lyric sheets.

nightandday May 27, 2007, 11:33 PM I love the song Mirror, Mirror among others. i just started getting into them. Any albums to recommend please?
Almost everything they released has been reissued on 3 CDs. Out of those, I would recommend that you get "The Damage" (compilation) and "The Visit / The Seduction" (1980 EP "The Visit" + album-double EP "The Seduction" + a couple of songs from 7" singles). "The Damage" is a good overview of their career, and it contains many of their cathiest, most accessible songs. I personally like "The Visit / The Seduction" the best. "The Seduction" is an excellent album.
I would recommend leaving "Pickpocket / Danger Came Smiling" for later. The first 6 tracks from that CD (originally from a 1981 cassette, "Pickpocket") are similar to the rest of their stuff, but "Danger Came Smiling" is very weird and experimental, and not to everyone's taste. I started liking it (or at least 60& of it) later, but I didn't when I first listened to it.
littlecharmer June 18, 2007, 04:55 PM Slightly off topic but I've come across a Linder interview, I don't know how new it is but its got some good pictures.
"Interviewer: What is the lyric that most vitally captures your vision of life?
LS: In the here and now, it has to be, gloriously:
At last I am born
it took me a long, long time
but now I am born
which also leaves the last words on the subject to my spiritual obstetrician, Morrissey. And it's good news, it's twins!"

pandora_cocteau June 18, 2007, 06:10 PM thank you little charmer! haven't read that one.
I didn't know that this thread existed!!!! i adore Ludus, they're my second favorite band to the Smiths, and Linder, well, Linder I love almost as much as Morrissey, there just aren't enough resources on herrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
I was also wondering what the full lyrics of "too hot to handle" are (i think i've read somewhere that the song was originally called 'the dress' but because of the outcome of the live performance where the song was recorded, people leaving and stuff, they called it 'too hot to handle" instead).
As soon as I find musicians, I will be covering a lot of Ludus' stuff. I think we'll start with She She and work our way down the list.
Albion June 18, 2007, 06:48 PM After reading some of the superlatives on this thread i am very interested in hearing some Ludus. I have read some references when reading some of young Morrissey's letters to music magazines. I have been unable to find any Ludus in my ususal sources and because of this i entreat the kind users of Morrissey-Solo to break my hymen and take my Ludus virginty by sending me some material of said group. I would be grateful but be ever so gentle for i am only a young un.

i'd send you some of their stuff but i don't know how to upload it!!!
if you dont have enough money to order their cds, get soulseek. you can find a lot of their things on there, with a little patience. it's well worth it.

Yes, defiantly try soulseek. I've got so much great stuff from there. I've even managed to get the scans of the pickpocket booklet. I've also seen some "demos" on there.

Thanks for the link, that one was new to me! :)
"the missing link between Tracey Emin and Yoko Ono"... I always thought she should feel offended by that description. And by that, of course, I mean the Tracey Emin comparison.
Hmm, she failed to comment on Emin...
pandora_cocteau June 28, 2007, 05:40 PM OK so i noticed the strangest thing which is probably old news but still. Too Hot to Handle and I Can't Swim I have Nightmares well, the first minute of it at least, sounds very alike. The music and the melody. Give it a listen...the lyrics are different...but I had my Ludus collection on while sitting in the other room, and I could have sworn that Too Hot to Handle was playing, when I walked in the room, it was I Can't Swim I have Nightmares.... weird that I've never connected the two before!

I've just gave it a listen and your right, they do sound very similar. I've never noticed before.

isn't it weird??? maybe they re-wrote nightmares for the show....
i've always wanted to see that gig at Hacienda...it's on tape, and from what I've heard, Linder has been showing it at some art meetings/conferences for women/what do i knows...I'd kill to see that!!!
littlecharmer August 2, 2007, 02:14 PM I was listening to Marc riley's Brain Surgery last night on BBC 6 Music and he has a feature on the show called Peel By Request. Anyway as the name suggests it lets you request any Peel session. Well as the Ludus Peel session has never been released I emailed Marc requesting the Ludus session. I thought that if enough people email the show requesting the Ludus session he might play it. Do you think there would be a chance if enough requests were made? I've sent an email requesting it and so far one other person I know has as well. I've also sent a message to the Ludus myspace page in hope that enough people on there will also email the show and request it. I know theres a fair few Ludus fans on here, so basically what Im saying is that we could all email Marc Riley requesting the session. We may as well because I can't think of any other chance of hearing the session.
Here's Marc Riley's 6 music page, if you scroll down there is the Peel By Request link. The Ludus session was on 04/08/82

Emailed! Now we play the waiting game.
I would love to hear it. Do you think any of us would be able to record it so we can have it for future use?
What I would love to see is the Hacienda gig on video. I know it exists and last I heard it was shown at some kind of a feminist/art convention in in England...I am honestly LIVING for the moment that I can see it. It is mildly annoying that Linder is such an influence of mine, yet there are SO few things on her out there. I think it adds even more mystery, which is appealing.

If this is successful I hope someone can record it. I would do it myself but I don't know how. I've heard that the Hacienda gig was shown as well, I really want to see it. I just hope that one day I can :)

Me too! I wish Ludus were bigger in the 80s..I go on You tube every day in hopes of someone having some mercy on us and posting that tape! But alas, no.
littlecharmer August 4, 2007, 08:06 AM Just got this reply from the Ludus myspace page.
"Hello Emily.
We'd love to help get Ludus on the radio, it would mean much to bring some art into the artless world and possibly introduce the band to new people. In hopes that fans support us, and knowing that Marc Riley is a respectable DJ (and an acquaintance to the members of Ludus), a bulletin will be posted.
All love to a fan & brightest blassings.

yes I can, basically this is the bit where he introduces the band, so he jokes he spent some time in prison and before he introduces the band he says that he would like us to meet his long time friend Linder Sterling a wonderful woman.

You never noticed it before? I always realized it was the same melody, only with different lyrics and played as a shorter, fiercer punk song rather than an improvisational jazz tune. They obviously liked to recycle their old songs, like in "Herstory", which is basically a medley of several of their other songs with an added new verse/song and some improvisation. And the basic melody and particularly the beginning of "Unveiled (A Woman's Travelogue)" sounds similar to "Unveil" - it's like a longer, more complicated and developed version of "Unveil".

I e-mailed James Nice, the head of the LTM records, to ask him about the video and the BBC sessions. He said Linder has so far 'sidestepped' his requests to release the Hacienda footage on DVD.
As for the Peel sessions, they couldn't release it because it would be too expensive to licence it from BBC.

Yes, it is possible to listen to the show online. It will also be on listen again so your be able to listen to it for a week after its broadcast.
I really hope someone can record it. Maybe someone in downloads/bootlegs would know how to record it and wouldn't mind doing so.

nightandday September 20, 2007, 06:30 PM Here, 3 tracks : Too hot to handle / Covenant / Vagina Gratitude.
I tried to cut the "bla-bla", but it was difficult.
One file : http://rapidshare.com/files/56947325/ludus.mp3.html
Thank you so much!
Here are the songs I cut from Kochka's mp3 using SoundForge:
Too Hot To Handle (Peel session) (http://www.sendspace.com/file/857pbw) (originally called Dress)
Vagina Gratitude (Peel session) (http://www.sendspace.com/file/356gdz) - this is the one where Linder read slang expressions for vagina from some catalogue...I'm amazed how many different expressions there are in the English language! :D
Covenant (Peel session) (http://www.sendspace.com/file/1ggd68)
Vagina Gratitude isn't complete, you can hear Linder starting to say something when Riley's voice interferes... I cut out all the bla-bla, including that part.
Hm, Ludus Peel session is supposed to consist of 4 songs...so, he played only 3? The 4th one should be Wrapped In Silence...it's a long one, maybe he had no time. :( It's probably very similar to the live version on The Damage.
nightandday September 20, 2007, 06:35 PM Wow, thank you so much, this is great :D
Now I can understand most of what what she sings on Too Hot To Handle:
"I dance around with my bones (? she mumbles something I can't make out)
Do what you want if I want it too
I ask for bread and you give me stones
I need a dress to cover my bones"
Which version do you prefer, this one or the live one from Damage? This one is good and clearer, but I still kind of prefer the live version, because it's fierce! The angry screaming is awesome. :)

Thanks for seperating them into the seperate tracks :)
I was hoping that he would play the whole session, but most of the time he doesn't play all of a requested session so I was kind of expecting that I wouldn't hear one of the songs.
Still, I think he chose the right 3 songs to play seeing as two of them we haven't heard and we got to hear a clearer version of Too Hot To Handle.

I know, it's great to finally get to hear what Linder is singing.
I've been listening to both versions so much today. I loved The Damage version ever since I first heard it, and its one of my favourite Ludus songs. I really love this version as well, but i prefer the intensity of the live version :)
nightandday September 20, 2007, 07:55 PM It's strange that Riley kept talking only about Arthur Kadmon and never mentioned Ian Devine, he's obviously not aware that Kadmon left the band in 1979 and that it was Ian who played on those Peel tracks.
Strange Fear October 6, 2007, 07:56 PM Recently my computer got cleaned out, so all of my songs were erased. So I was wondering if someone could upload these songs. I know they have been uploaded many times, but just please, it would be very appreciated.:)

no problem.
i share wisely, that's what i was advised by the person who gave this to me. i hope you guys enjoy them. ludus....is just...well...it does not need to be said obviously. one of the best bands ever created, and it is such a shame there isn't more information on them.
i soooo badly wanted to see the Linder exhibit in NY...and it is so awful that it ended a couple of weeks back because I am going to NY so soon...
I heard they were showing the Hacienda footage and everything...my dreammmmm is to see that.
I have a question...what is one song that got you into Ludus? Mine, aside from the obvious Breaking the Rules, would have to be Box. The lyrics are so powerful and really speak to me.
littlecharmer October 16, 2007, 12:31 PM Ludus interview, NME 5th September 1981
MILITANT WORDS IN A ROCK AND ROLL VACUUM
Another routine interview concluded, I said thank you to Ludus. I popped the recorder in a pocket and looked for the bar. There's not much else to do in a dark mid-week mid-Manchester discotheque.
But Ludus had other ideas. "Aren't you going to ask us our message for the world, then?" said Ian Devine, the group's guitarist. "Don't you want to talk about Politics?"
He wasn't smiling, but it took me a moment to see he was serious. I said that I don't usually raise politics in interviews any more, that it proved too unpopular. And while Linder Ludus sat back in shadow, the other two Luduses leaned forward, suddenly alert.
Well Ludus are a militant group, they said. Ian Devine explained "Everything we do is a reflection of what we feel about things generally. You say most people shy away from talking about it...well, hopefully the day will come when your paper's just full of people saying 'Look, we find it indecent to be talking about rock and roll in a vacuum'. Hopefully, the music papers will be full of bands saying 'We do give a toss about the world, and we are gonna do our bit, do our damnedest to change things, however small that attempt may be.' "
Tough talk from a group often dismissed as effete, artsy doodlers. Dids, aka Graham Dowdell, who's the drummer, took up the theme: "Rock's always taken a covert fascist stance really, in the way that it's always been male dominated and hero-dominated. And it's time to get away from that, time for rock musicians to look outside the stereotyped sexual relationships.
Linder's lyrics say very specific things about women's position in the world, and the music hopefully states similar things in more general terms. When we don't comply with traditional musical forms, that's a manifestation of a refusal to comply with the forms of a society that's been dished down to us...Rock isn't supposed to be put on a pedestal as 'Art' and seperated from life."
Okay. Ludus, it's fairly clear, don't approach the fun world of popular music-making in quite the same way as the majority of their contemporaries. And the three years of the group's exsistence have seen them grow more, not less, distanced from it.
Once a highly-promising new oufit who played early dates supporting Magazine, they've since split and splintered and come back in different shapes, and drifted steadily away from the mainstream of commercial potential and critical acceptance. Once upon a time, NME described them as "bewitching, elaborate and precarious". By the time of their most recent review, a former admirer saw them as "precious but worthless".
I used to rate them an awful lot. Nowadays, although I can admire their uncompromising stance, their musical output seems more erratic: flashes of magic and puddles of boredom.
Line-up wise, the one constant element since formation has been the singing of Linder, a sort of ethereal jazz. Her remarkable graphics, including drawings and montage (she was responsible for early Buzzcocks and Magazine cover work also) are another integral feature of Ludus product. This was taken to its highest stage yet with the release of 'Pickpocket', a cassette/booklet package on Manchester's New Hormones label, designed by her, compromising a six-track tape and magazine of Linder's words amd pictures by a friend, Birrer. The tape follows two vinyl releases ('The Visit' EP and a single 'My Cherry Is In Sherry'/'Anatomy is Not Destiny' and precedes a new 45 'Mother's Hour'/'Patient'.
As former musicians "drifted away", Ludus came to rest on a nucleus of Linder, Ian Devine and Graham Dowdell. As yet, no one's been slotted in as a permanent bass-player, though "live auditions" continue. And now they find themselves with a backlog of unrecorded material, to be committed to a LP (or perhaps a double 12") "when New Hormones can afford it". What can be certain is that the finished result will be intensely individual, owing little to anything else around.
For one thing, the group lay stress on improvisation, a tactic that's hardly calculated to endear them to a wide audience. Or is it?
"About a year ago," said Linder, "we were doing these gigs that were totally improvised and we thought that people would really hate it, be abusive and walk out. But they didn't - and we were really surpirsed."
Whatever the reviews say, the band's infrequent live shows demostrate there's a sizeable crowd prepared to bear with Ludus' experiments. Maybe the post-punk climate has been changing in their favour?
Ian: "A year ago we were supporting UB40 at the Factory and we just got the most terrible abuses right through the set. We were playing, then we stopped, and it was 'Fuck-off fuck-off'. And yet tonight (a show at Manchester's Gallery) the response was much nicer. So the response has changed, but that's an active thing, due to our perserverance, rather than that an external force has become more favourable."
And Ludus are ambitious: Ian Devine, particularly, shows no fondness for cult appeal. He's fed up with them being "the oldest up-and-coming group"..."The Visit sold 3500 really quickly, and the next single sold 1000, which is really poxy - any band can get rid of 1000 singles. And our single was an attempt to be more accessible."
Lack of wider accaptance, they claim, is due to factors like limited press exposure and no funds to advertise with, rather than to their music.
"I don't think it's inaccessable," says Graham reasonably. "It's hopefully rich and interesting, but I don't think it's difficult to enjoy, or difficult to listen to. We try to make parts of it danceable." (Looking around the disco, it's not easy to imagine the sounds of, say, Ludus' 'Mutilate' inducing night fever on any large scale. Anyhow...)
Ian devine gets impatient: "This thing about inaccessability. Some bands break through really quickly: they form, three months later they're immensely popular. You get other bands who take two or three years to come through, and that's what we're gonna do. We'll do it eventually, we'll break through. We'll sell 10,000 records instead of 1000. It's just a matter of time."
Graham:"But we wouldn't be interested in diluting the music to do that. It's vital that the popularity is on our terms"
And that, I take it, means the songs remaining as committed as ever? Linder agrees, especially in the area that's loosely called feminism:"I can't help but deal with those things, because I'm a woman and I'm writing the lyrics. That's how I see the world; and I'm treated in a certain way because I happen to be female. It concerns me."
And your music? Linder:"It would be easy - because we're technically able - we could easily do a jazzy set or Latin American. It would be easy for us to think, let's become fashionable and develop a very slick, easy sound. But we're not interested.

I made my friends Linderesque cards for Christmas...found an old 1950s nude lady book....and replaced their heads with various items found in vintage Playboy magazines such as cameras, liqueur bottles etc. I was going to scan them but I was impatient. Oh how I adore Linder. I am not done trying to find the person/organization that owns the Hacienda footage- I must see it before I die!!!!!!!

You will definitely be able to find i-D at most bigger book stores like Barns and Noble etc. I found mine at World's Biggest Bookstore in Toronto which is a part of the Indigo enterprise. Just make sure it's not I.D. magazine which is different.
Good luck!
nowherefast944 January 12, 2008, 04:38 AM So I'm trying to organize all the Ludus songs I've recently downloaded (I can't find the LPs ANYWHERE, nor the CDs).
I have 2 versions of track 4, which is Herstory and I want to know which is the correct one for this album.
One I have at 8:43 and the other at 7:22. The shorter version is significantly louder throughout though they both seem to have a completed ending. Also, the shorter version has a fade out ending, whereas the longer version contains the lyrics "i steal your books and you steal mine" where the other version ends.
Any help would be fantastic!
Also, could anyone upload "Behind Your Eyes"? :)

You guys HAD to read this article..it's basically entirely written by Linder.....who is a goddess, so I translated it. Mind you, I have not spoken Swedish in over 4 years...so my translation may be a bit choppy. It was great practice, and I had to bust out the dictionary a couple of times too!!!!
Where do all the boring record covers come from? No, actually, forget that question. Instead ask where do all the beautiful ones come from, and the answer is not that hard.. The beautiful and content-rich ones, the fantastical and artistic ones, the provocative and overachieving ones come from an independent label a world over. I had no difficulty discovering that fact when I once again went through my album collection of 'two steps ahead' records. Darn, I thought, this is the day to show certain album covers and talk about the ideas behind them. That is why I wrote to a number of labels and their designers and asked them about policy, content and thoughts.
The first answer I got you can see here- a long letter from singer/designer Linder from a Manchester-based group Ludus who were featured in last issue of SCHLAGER. Her design shows independence and ideas combined with assured individuality long before the 'planning book flirting mainstream music ever tiring prepackagings'
Linder Says:
"Ludus words, music and artwork and uniqueness develop and refine and merge together. I think it is both hard and easy to try to analyze your inspiration. My artwork is intense, personal and I find it impossible to create sufficient distance from myself to accomplish a truly objective dissection.
My greatest fascination is the female form and her visual portrayal in today's society. In spite of the fact that they are stylized, the women that I draw are incorporated with meat and blood, compared to those more common portraits of women as wet-mouthed, big-breasted and flat-stomached. Most of my women are strong and self-sufficient characters; with two exceptions- the woman on The Visit and the woman on one of the sides of The Seductions. These two manifest a different, unlucky and unavoidable side of being a woman- woman as an offer, woman who is persuaded, woman who is prey, woman who gives in and suffocates and is left mangled.
The woman's face on The Seduction is immensely expressive in contrast to those anonymous, empty photos from men's point of view. This one here has a more personal stance of an all too familiar female paranoia. Feelings are also found written in the song "Unveiled- a woman's Travelogue" on the same album.
The back-side on the "Seduction" come from a drawing inspired by the song "My Cherry is in Sherry" which actually means: my cherry/my girlfriend- is in sherry/is menstruating. Despite that it is right splendid description, there definitely is a number of women who fin that offensive to be compared with sherry and implication of consumption. The depicted woman bears the usual attributes associated with porn- fishnet stockings, garter belts-- clothes that are designed to incite and attract men. But the inclusion of bandages and holders interrupts and contradicts an assumption of feminine lust and suggest availability.
The inner sleeve of "My Cherry is in Sherry" shows two female figures who challenge the establishment on a notion that a girl necessarily must be heterosexual.
For the cassette tape "Pickpocket" we did a special photo-magazine and single "Mother's Hour", I worked with photographer Christina Birrer in order to transfer my ideas and sketches into a more crafty series of photos. For "Pickpocket" I began to research possibilities of three-dimensional fotomontage- something that I have already done earlier and which was a natural development of my earlier montages in Secret Public, Orgasm Addict etc. It is something that I believe will be understood on a deeper level in future.
LP "Danger Came Smiling" was my first attempt with two-colour-stroke! I let the whole intent be to give the women some facial expression, even though the ones from before had both eyes and mouths. There are about 30 preliminary sketches that lead to my private installation of brilliant, wonderful women. Women who are both independent and unmoved of how they look, women who feel strong and secure in their bodies. I especially like the ambiguity of the hair/helmets. "
Linder has currently finished the design for Ludus' new record- Riding the Rag" which will be released on an Italian record label, not New Hormones who until now have stood behind her endeavors. She was working on a series of album covers that are desired for the Crepscule-label. Linder has dropped all of her immense work and now focuses on exclusively designing for Ludus.
Linder finished my questions with somewhat of a policy-declaration, her beliefs towards the world around us.
"I am interested to desroy those frames that limit us all. Frames of gender, work, art, life. I don't think that you can ever be objective neither isolated- separation is the same as death. For me, food is art, fucking is art, everything is art. Art is all"

I was in Borders a few weeks ago - magazine called map has back page dedicted to Linder - and it said she was recording:D:D:). It may be still there.

They exist- the entire footage of the legendary Hacienda gig...Linder's gallery (well at least the gallery/art distributers responsible for her work and exhibitions) have been showing it at the PS1 exhibition in New York. I emailed a guy about it and he said that they were in the talks of releasing it on DVD, but it fell through. I'd buy 10 just to see it!!!!!

Yep a fair bit of Ludus stuff on there. ;) Good find LittleCharmer thanks for posting. :)
nightandday March 13, 2008, 03:33 AM Wow, you guys have found so much wonderful stuff since the last time I've been here! I've kind of neglected this forum... :o The article is great, and I had no idea there was a New Hormones site!
To answer a few questions...
I've been looking for this magazine since I read these posts. I can't find it anywhere. I'm in the states... in Philadelphia.
I saw some of the Ludus records on GEMM.com but I have no experience with the website... has anyone? Would you recommend it?
So I'm trying to organize all the Ludus songs I've recently downloaded (I can't find the LPs ANYWHERE, nor the CDs).
The verson i have from "The suduction" is the 8:43 one. ;)
It's really difficult to find ludus stuff :( I have manged to find a few records and cd's in second hand record shops but they usually cost a lot- but once i found a Ludus CD in a bargain bin for £1!
Ludus CDs can be ordered online. You can get them from Amazon, but it's even easier to order them directly from LTM Recordings (http://www.ltmrecordings.com/), an independent record label which specializes in re-releasing post-punk and avangarde records from late 70s and 80s, mostly those that were originally released on Factory Records and Les Disques du Crepuscule (A Certain Ratio, The Passage, Josef K, Anna Domino, Blue Orchids, The Royal Family And The Poor, Crispy Ambulance, Section 25, Bleine Reininger...). They have a very good website with artist biographies and articles. Check out the Ludus bio, written by the head of the label, James Nice (also printed on the Damage sleevenotes): http://www.ltmpub.freeserve.co.uk/ludusbio.html
Ludus CD catalogue: http://www.ltmpub.freeserve.co.uk/luduscat.html
and instructions how to buy CDs: http://www.ltmpub.freeserve.co.uk/mailordr.html
I bought several CDs from them, including all 3 Ludus CDs, and the Devine/Sterling CD. I just e-mailed James Nice, who seems like a nice guy (no pun intended), I gave him my details including the Visa number, and I soon got the DVDs into my mailbox.
I also asked him about the Peel sessions (that was about a year or two ago, before they were broadcast on the radio) and the Hacienda footage. He explained that they couldn't release the Peel sessions because they belong to BBC, who are asking too much money for them; and he said Linder had, so far, always sidestepped his requests to release the Hacienda footage on DVD.
re: "Herstory". The shorter version (7:22) is from the original vinyl release of "The Seduction" on New Hormones (1982). I don't have the actual album (double EP), but I got it from Soulseek. Amazingly, you can find almost everything by Ludus on Soulseek - and I don't mean the CD rips, I mean rips from the original vinyl and cassette releases! That's where I got the scans of the "Pickpocket" booklet as well. I even found a couple of Ludus tracks that appear to be demo versions of "Sightseeing" and "Mother's Hour" (in a folder made of demo tracks by lots of obscure post-punk bands)!! :)
The longer version is from the CD re-release "The Visit/The Seduction" (LTM, 2002). Tracks on CDs were mastered from the original tapes. I guess that Ludus recorded the longer version when they were working on the album, but they probably decided to go with a shorter one because the other one was too long for the EP. Then, I guess, they restored the longer version to the CD.
However, that's not the only difference between the CD and the double EP "The Seduction". The double EP "The Seduction" included a longer version of their single "My Cherry Is In Sherry" (a little over 6 minute long). But on CD, they put the short, single version. The long album version is therefore only available on vinyl - and as a vinyl rip.
You can find details about all official Ludus releases on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludus See Discography and click to read the individual articles about each release. I can guarantee they're reliable, because I wrote them all. :p
I have never heard of "Behind Your Eyes" though - where is it from? It's not on any official releases. Is it a live track? What can you tell me about it?
has anyone heard/or have the album put out by linder and ian under the name "Devine and Sterling" ? i read about it, apparently it was released in the late 90's ?
anyone have a clue?
I have it. :) As I said - I ordered it from LTM. It has been released in a limited number of copies, and as far as I know, you can't get it anywhere else but from LTM itself. This is what their website says about it:
DEVINE & STERLING REQUIEM (LAND 14) £7
LTM have a limited number of CD copies of the 2001 collaboration between Ian Devine and Linder Sterling, titled Clint Eastwood, Claire Offreduccio and Me. This largely electronic Requiem comprises seven tracks: Enquiry, Recognition, Judgement, Invitation, Admission, Acknowledgement, Grace. These are 21 haunting minutes that any Ludus and Linder completist should not miss.
Reviews: "Working with gritty layered guitars over which Linder triggers sound samples... the piece recalls the shifting soundscapes of Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfooting. While many of the CD's themes - in particular, the parallels Linder makes between the bandlands of Spagetti Western and north Manchester, and the enduring interest in female divinity - are picked up in other Linderland works, this stands alone as a commendable experiment that can only broaden definitions of performance" (The Wire, 05/2001)
The music is nothing like Ludus at all, it is not jazz or post-punk. It is Ian Devine's ambiental, atmospheric, mostly electronic soundtrack to one of Linder's performances of "Working Class Goes to Paradise". There are no lyrics - but Linder speaks some lines, interspersed with extracts she chose from the movies "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" and Fellini's "Giulietta degli Spiritti", as well as from some record, apparently by members of the Shakers, the religious group that Linder seems quite interested in (I only learned that after reading the sleevenotes and checking it on Amazon).
But it is really beautiful and haunting, I definitely got my money's worth, and more. It is, in fact, one of my favourite albums to listen to before I go to sleep. :)

Intriguing! I did a little googling and found this.

Also, there's a review (along with the review of a recent show) here (http://artnews.org/gallery.php?i=83&exi=11009).

thank you very much! I thought I had pretty much everything (except Peel sessions, etc).
are the 7" and EP versions of the songs any different from the major compilations?
Patient and The Fool - from Pickpocket EP are very different from The Damage compilation.

there is a difference in some instances. there are two different versions of "patient", for instance - one only has the lyrics "anaesthetize" whereas the other has verses and everything.
in addition, i believe that i have vinyl rips of everything except for danger came smiling, so there is a difference in the sound/mix of all of these files to what can be found on the LTM re-releases and on the damage compilation.
also, i just added the booklet scans for pickpocket and scans of the sleeve for mother's hour. i'd love to add more high-quality scans of the album art if any of you have it.
Sherry July 15, 2009, 02:43 AM Thank-you. I was searching all over for "Anatomy is not Destiny"
nowherefast944 July 15, 2009, 02:45 AM I think Night and Day has the original vinyl records. You may be able to get her to scan them if she has them.
I haven't seen her on here in a long time though.

oh, i wouldn't want to make her have to scan them all. i was hoping the scans existed somewhere on the internet already. i mean, i assume they do, i just haven't found them yet.
joe frady July 20, 2009, 05:36 PM Just to let all you Ludus-ites know, Moz has put 'Breaking The Rules' back into his pre-show mix-tape. It's the final track before Doll and the Kicks take the stage. It sounded mighty fine blasting out at Brixton!
Melville Farr July 26, 2009, 09:25 PM In case anyone is still lurking in this thread looking for Ludus downloads...

This is everything I've been able to find by Ludus. The only track I am missing as far as I know is "Rosa Luxemburg" from the Black Music compilation (http://home.wxs.nl/~frankbri/ltm2347.html). If you've got it or anything else I don't have, PLEASE send it my way. Enjoy!
Many thanks for this, I didn't have the Peel session, marvellous! Don't have Rosa Luxemburg though, sadly....

Was that what that noise was ? I thought the tape had warped ;)
joe frady September 7, 2009, 12:56 PM Not technically Ludus, nor 'other music', but short of starting a 'Linder' thread, thought I would post this here ~

Linder exhibition next year in Glasgow (my home town!) as part of Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.
A mite premature I know, but it's always good to be prepared ;)

I'd so buy those shoes :horny: if they were significantly less than $795. They come in black, too.
