hello people,

the last film i saw was Bad Santa. yes i have started a new thread with some high art!
bad isn't the word, i thought it was terrible. just billy bob thorton swearing at a fat kid for 90 mins. that was all it was a joke about a sad man, criminal dressed as santa (ho Ho ho) swearing and being drunk fighting, having sex.... oh what a concept, he is like santa but what a juxtaposition or not. some redemption in the end, a little bit of a sentimental hollywood ending, but it was crap.

your turn....

Well, the last film I saw was Borat but I already discussed it. The next to last was Crash (the Paul Haggis one), and I thought it was one of the best films I've seen in the last few years. Strange, because when I look back on it now, it seems a bit kitchy (do you use that word in English?) and cliched, but while watching I thought it was superb.
I saw Bad Santa and agree it's pretty bad, goes nowhere and very depressing. Billy Bob Thornton is good though.

I saw Tsai Ming-Liang's latest film "I don't want to sleep alone" yesterday afternoon as a part of London Film Festival.
He caused a huge controversy last year because of the very explicit sexual scene in "The Wayward Cloud" which grossed the highest box office taking in Taiwan.

The story takes place in Kuara Lanpor, Tsai's favourite actor Lee Kang-Sheng plays two parts, one of them is a man on life-support machine, the other is a homeless guy. We don't know they're the same person or the other may be dreaming/remembering of himself.

A homeless Chinese guy Hsiao Kang is robbed, beaten and left for dead;he is found and nursed by Rawang, an immigrant worker, who lives in the shell of a modern building abondoned during the construction. We don't know Rawang's feelings for Hsaio Kang, but a waitress Chyi who hangs out with him, moreover her mistress also fancies him which makes things really complicated.

Tsai's film is usually slowly revealing the relationship with the characters. Some people may find it hard to follow, but if you're patient enough to follow it'd be rewarding. I love his dead-pan sense of humour and the way shot the urban decay; in his film rundown buildings look really unsual and bizarrely beautiful.

Tsai's obssession with boy-meets-girl story is very unique. It's also very teasing because he hardly give us any information about the characters, audience are forced to fill the gaps by themselves.
I really hope it'll get a distribuiton in UK.

After watching the awful Bad Santa this week, I finally saw Lost in Translation (yes I have a lot of catching up to do in watching films).
I liked it, sort restored my "faith" in English language films, but what do get if you choose to watch a film called Bad Santa.
Bill Murray, well was like Bill Murray in the film, droll is the word, suitable for the films mellow pace. Two people bored by the luxury surrounding them, that they meet and develop a friendship (love) that won't last, I like that idea. Japan does seem like a more alien culture then you would expect, are there many films being made showing a 'fish out of water' narrative, I don't think so or don't know, to be correct. I enjoyed the film, dry in it's wit, thanks to Bill Murray I would think, then Sofia Coppola's script or direction.

Last night I saw "The Reckoning," the latest title in my Netflix Monkfest 2006. I was supposed to watch something else, but nexflix screwed up again, or maybe I ordered my queue badly  But I digress (as usual). The film had everything: wintry medieval backdrop, religious overtones, a theatre troupe, angry townspeople, an evil aristocrat, and the plague. Bonus? Paul Bettany and Willem Dafoe. I give it four and a half cowls.

Sorry to hijack (Chartres started it! :p ) but how come there's never any TV talk around here, only films and music? Do you peple not watch TV?

I tried starting up a few TV-related threads back in the days but I suppose they all died out by now. I watch a lot of TV (in fact, it's mostly turned on when I'm at home and, although I don't pay that much attention to it, I like the sound of it in the back).

I follow quite a few series but I must admit DVD has ruined all the suspense of waiting for 7 days 'till you see the next episode. As soon as I like something I get it on DVD and then I spend my Sundays going from episode one to episode 137 with short bathroom-food-mozsolo breaks. I am now watching Veronica Mars, next Sunday is reserved for Nip/tuck and a Sunday after that I'm all in The Wire.

There's still quite a few interesting stuff going on TV - on friday nights we get English criminal dramas so I make sure to watch it/tape it if I'm not there, I watch certain political shows and movies (if there's a good one on). I guess you could say I spend a lot of time in front of the TV but it really isn't that bad. I still get around a lot of other stuff and I don't miss it if I go away for a few weeks but I would find it hard not to have it for months (if nothing else then for that background effect I'm so fond of)

"The Prestige". A really fantastic film. I really can't wait to see it again. Both Christian Bale *sigh* and Hugh Jackman *double sigh* turn out great performances. In fact, everyone in the film does well.

The only thing that I did not like about it was the ending. They apparently decided that they had to explain everything at the very end, in case any members of the audience didn't "get it". I don't like having my intelligence insulted that way, particularly in an otherwise very intelligent, fascinating film.

On TV: I suppose I don't technically watch TV because I don't understand half of it... I used to watch reruns of The Sweeney and The Professionals on Men And Motors (I love mentioning to people that this is my favourite TV channel, the looks I get! :D) but now I own them all on DVD, cause staying up till 12 whenever I wanted to watch something wasn't the best option. Still watch Minder every weekend at 8 (6 GMT...) though.

Touch of evil : I hadn't seen it since the early nineties I think. I don't know what the movie would have looked like if Welles could have shot it with the director's cut, but it is already a masterpiece.

From the first incredible and breathtaking first sequence - a three-minute uninterrupted crane tracking shot - to the end, the film deals with some very modern questions and is a model for most the (neo) noir movies

I watched a Brazilian film called Lower City. this was about two petty criminals in a love triangle with a prostitute. some parts of the film were violent and also it has some sexy scenes. one scene had a cock fight (the farm yard animals please!!!!).
it was ok. the narrative was pretty basic and I found it interesting to see the scenes outside in the streets, the poverty etc (a different lifestyle, then what I see in American or English films). acting was ok too.

This month NFT is hosting Japanese cult film season. Most of them are trashy, but one of the best is Kihach Okamoto's "Sward of Doom".
It's an adaptation of an uncompleted saga, the script was written by Shinobu Hashimoto who wrote "Seven Samurai", very influential film to Leone and Peckinpah alike.

It's a story about a nihilistic sward man who is kill to live leads him insanity. Tatsuya Nakadai's perfomance is awesome.

The season will travel to other part of UK later and next screening at NFT is November 12th 6:15pm.

It will only open in cinemas in January, at least here in Holland.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

it's a very visually film with loads of odd little CG touches and subtle visual gags. The cutaway tour of the ship was a classic, and everything seem to be in pastals. i'm begining to get bored of bill Murray's deadpan performances but I also liked the smaller roles like Klaus. The soundtrack was wonderful with unexpectedly hilarious Bowie covers, scott walker and pounding, rocking tracks in the action scenes, which were very flamboyant. i wish i had paid more attention to it that is a probelm with watching films at home sometimes.

I saw The Departed a few days ago. It was good and very suspenseful, despite some odd script choices, especially the sucky ending. Very good peformances all around, especially from Leo DiCaprio, who I usually can't stand and would never think of as a "hardass." :) Nicholson was also good as usual, though not as scary as you'd expect from a mobster. He's more the "he's off his rocker" scary, rather than "he has no conscience" scary, you know? Also, I could have done without the heavy Boston accents, especially from Mr. Damon (who really is from Boston, but it's no excuse, he never talks like that in real life).
I recommend it though, all in all a movie that makes you think.

I was bit sceptical about "The Departed" because I've watched the original (Infernal Affair) and didn't like the idea of remake.
However, Scorcese ditched confusing flashbacks and casted distinctive actors which worked very well.
Look forward to his next film "The Silence" which is an adaptation of Japanese Novelist Shusaku Endo.

"The Squid and The Whale", I'm very disappointed with the director's use of soundtrack.
The choice of the music is good, but he doesn't know how to use them effectively.
As sonof77 commented it's a very interesting film and worth watching.

Saw Casino Royale last night in a very packed cinema. It was great, Daniel Craig is Bond, he looks tough and looks like the type of man who can do the job. The whole style of the Bond film has changed, gone are the silly gadgets and when he is hit or punched he bleeds, he hurts etc he doesn’t walk away and just straightens his tie! He even ends up in hospital.
While you would like to say it gritty, it isn’t really, the pacing of the film is it’s only flaw. The action is exciting and the violence very brutal as it shows, what he has to do to get the job done and it isn’t nice.
Eva Green is stunning as Vesper Lynd and also it still has the exotic locations and flash cars.
Lets hope Eon productions stick to this type of Bond film, which they tried to do when Timothy Dalton played him but failed in the late 80s. It was a “gamble” with Casino Royale but it’s has worked.

Last night I went to see Paolo Sorrentino's new film "Family Friend" as a part of Italian Film Festival. The film was re-edited after showing Cannes in May, but they haven't managed to transfer to 35mm yet, this screening was done by Betamax video format.
Later my friend who works at the cinema said to me that there's some argument with the distributer and the screening arrangement.
Sorrentino seemed really tired and I missed the opportunity to ask his autograph...I'm bit unlucky with Italian directors. I still regret not make an effort to meet Fellini in 91 in Tokyo and I was very close to Francesco Rosi last year, but decided not to bother him:(

It's a similar mode of Sorrentino's previous film "Consequences of Love". Geremia, a middle-aged loan shark who is infatuated with Rosalba who happens to be one of his borrowers' daughter.

After screenig we had a Q&A session with the director. One of the snippets of the film is that Giacomo Rizzo who plays Geremia was very anxious to distingush between the character and himself, at one point Sorrentino was given a gold bracelet by him. What a generous guy.
Sorrentino also said that it took time to convince Laura Chiatti who plays Rosalba to accept the role.

I highly recommend "Consequences of Love" if you haven't watched it yet.
"Family Friend" will be released in April 2007 in UK. :)

^^^ kewpie thank you for your reviews^^^

Auto focus (Paul Schrader)

Greg Kinnear amazing in this film as Bob Crane the star of 60s comedy show ‘Hogan’s Heroes’. Bob Crane's descent into moral madness can be seen as shocking, especially when juxtaposed with the family entertaining Hogan's Heroes. As he and his friend (William defoe) use the early video taping machines to record their sexual adventures with fans or groupies; which was his down fall in the end and his murder by his jealous friend.
You kind of feel sorry for him as fame and technology cause his lack of moral judgement and hedonism; as he was once such a family guy!
The look of the film is excellent too with the clothes and the mise en scene, of the late sixties.

just watched a strange film called The Hills have Eyes, it's a remake from some 70s horror film (I thought it was better then that one which is rare). quite liked it really, not many films have a narrative about a family of mutant cannibals, living in the old atomic bomb testing grounds of the USA, high-jacking the more traditional "nuclear" ha, family to feed on, murder and rape. not one for the family at Xmas, but if want a fairly scary movie where you can cheer the family dog and lead male, while they rescue family members, then this may be it.
woh i watch some classy movies!

I've watched Waiting for Guffman and Best in show and just have A mighty wind left. I'll let you know when I've watched it.

The bit in Best in show where the hostage negotiator tries to talk his son down from the garden shed roof by saying "Get down here or I will gouge out your left eye with my thumb, I shit you not you crazy freak" actually made me cry laughing.

It's wickedly weird film, brilliantly convined live action and animation.

my god, it was awful! from what i heard, it was supposed to be an accurate depiction of the early punk era based around the times of a member of the Sex Pistols, but everyone in the film looked like late 80's punks with mowhawks and sleeved in tatoos. plus the actressed playing Nancy Spugen's presence was more irritating than that of miss Spugen herself. I've watched 8 films of Marco Ferreri in two weeks:
Queen Bee
Ape Woman
Diary of a Maniac
The Flesh
Dillinger is Dead
The Last Woman
Bye Bye Monkey
La Grande Bouffe

This retrospective was a low-key affair compared with last year's Francesco Rosi retrospective, but it's all welcome to have any chance of watching Italian classics.

First Ferreri film I saw was Liza, when I was 16 it was on TV after midnight. It's a story about a recluse cartoonist Giorgio (Mastroianni) living with a pet dog on a remote island. One day his life is disturbed by an arrival of a beautiful blonde Liza (Deneuve), who left from a yacht after a row with her boyfriend.
Soon Liza becomes very jealous with the dog and kills it in order to monoplize Giorgio's affection...in the end they decide to leave this world with an old aeroplane painted in pink, but the frame frozes when the aeroplane starts to move.

I couldn't stop crying afterwards because it's so sad and really haunting. This is the first collaboration with Philippe Sarde who's never failed to provide subtle, yet very beautiful music to all the films he involved.

In Ferreri's film often men are lost, vulnable and self-destractive, on the other hand women are in charge of their lives and know what they want.
It's very personal yet his films are often reflected the state of the society.
Earlier films Queen Bee and Ape Woman are conventionally structured comedies, but already have surreal and absurdist tendancy.
I haven't read any interviews of Ferreri and really curious what impact he had the death of Pasolini.
These two directors have something in common:never afraid of challenging the taboos and love to shock the audience. In fact Ferreri acted in Pasolini's Pigsty with one of his regulars Ugo Tognazzi.
I'm so addicted to Italian films which are filled with poisonous decadent feel.
It's so fascinating to watch them which leads me to totally different dimentions.

It's also great to discover another wonderful Italian composer Teo Usuelli.

Charlie and his chocolate factory. Johnny Depp is one of those few actors that the girls go woof woof for and the boys clap clap for!! (Unless they're boys of a certain nature)

As for the rest of the film... I always thought Veruca Salt was a mid-90s American band.

I enjoy seeing Richard Gere getting cheated on. :) Also enjoyed the DVD featurette on film editing by Anne Coates, who edited my favorite movie of all-time, The Elephant Man, and whose name reminds me of the name Morrissey's sped-up voice once used.

I saw this movie 10 times or so, but I've got to mention it here: Fucking Amal from Lukas Moodysson (he's a Morrisseyfan) most beautiful movie I've ever seen and there are some shots in it where you can see Moz on posters in a girls room, if you never saw it, watch it!!, but I guess everybody knows it already :) it's about 2 teenage girls fall in love with eachother, very funny, charming and sensetive...

Ooh, I like Fucking Amal, it's very sweet, and the language is kind of funny, no offence Chartres! :). The ending was a bit weird, it would have been better to end it with the previous scene, with the girls coming out (oh so symbolically ;) ) of the bathroom, but whatever. I really like the soundtrack, some good songs from this band Broder Daniel (musically; the lyrics are utter crap :) ).

i just watched Broke-back mountain, what a beautifully made film, I wish i had seen it at the cinema, for all the shots of the mountains and scenery.
the story moves along with a slow pace... heath ledger seems to mumble his words. the two leads express the masculinity of their love for each other but at times a tenderness in shy looks and coyness and 'love' is a word never said in their relationship, which is hidden away on fishing trips.
well i liked it, it's a sad story.

yeah too right... he pushed every one away who love him, jack, his wife, his daughter, the girl friend... because he scared of his 'real' love another man, and he knew the world he lived in wouldn't accept it.

The Devil and Daniel Johnson is a great documentary about a disturbed songwriter with a big cult following. Funny, sad, moving, and a great introduction to a really unique artist.
A Scanner Darkly is a faithful adaptation of one of Philip K Dick's best novels and has some great performances, especially Robert Downey Jr. Very entertaining, funny and thoughtful movie. A dark film about living in a near police state in the middle of a drug epidemic. Sounds familiar?

I just watched a film tribute called Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man and it's very worth watching whether you're a fan already or not. Don't be fooled by the pics of Bono on the cover, he's hardly in it, but is just the most famous person and he doesn't sing. Has Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, and a number of other pretty good singer/song interpreters and some great interview footage with Cohen. Excellent film.

^^That's the one! Linus Roache gives such a good performance, and the script (by Jimmy McGovern, one of my fave writers) is so intelligent and compassionate. And yes, Robert Carlyle's in it too which is always good, especially when he's kissing another man :) .
"Priest" was a very good film... although I usually get very annoyed when Catholic priests in films stick to the secrecy of confession rule even when someone is about to be murdered or there is a child abuse going on. I didn't know Jimmy McGovern wrote it. His scripts for Cracker were brilliant, especially the story with Robert Carlyle ("To Be A Somebody"). Any other Cracker fans here?

The last films I saw were "The Bourne Identity" and Antonia Bird's "Face" (starring Robert Carlyle) because both were on TV in the last couple of days. Well, actually, I missed at least a half of "Face", so I can't even be sure how good the film is. I think I like it, or liked that much that I saw.

I would rather talk about the last film I saw in a cinema - "Walk On Water". I saw it a few weeks ago, at a retrospective of Israeli cinema. I thought it was great. Has anyone else seen it?

oops then...
I don't mean that you SHOULDN'T root for anybody in the film, I mean that there is no rule what the viewer is "supposed" to feel. Especially in the film like that, which is not a black-and-white story with clear-cut heroes and villains. "A Clockwork Orange" is one of the best examples of a story where the main character is a villain ("villain-hero"); the villain-hero might be violent and ammoral, but he's usually given some appealing characteristics to make him more interesting, or some sympathy for him stems from the fact that the other characters and the society in general aren't presented in a flattering light. All this might be a part of the intention to make the ethical aspects of the story more ambiguous. It's not like a typical Hollywood movie where it almost feels like they're saying to you: 'OK, this guy is obviously a hero, so you should root for him, and this guy is a villain, so hate him'. It's more interesting when you're not sure what you feel about the characters. People might root for Alex or they might hate him, or they might dislike him but still feel some sympathy towards him at some points in the story.

For instance, I did find it a little preachy, but it's because I live here so I'm familiar with the themes and don't need them explained - it seems to be more directed at international rather than domestic audiences, which is legitimate, I suppose. Anyway, it is far better than most Israeli films. What others did you see at that retrospective?

I saw The Prestige the other day, anyone seen it? A twist filled story of two rival magicians in the 19th century. Suspensful, but pretty depressing, as tragedy follows tragedy, with not a moment of comic relief. Stupid twist in the ending, too. To be honest what I most enjoyed was yummy Christian Bale and his lovely working class accent :) . David Bowie also has a small role, and he's very good actually.

EDIT: I see this post pushed my last post back, so nightandday, see back page for my reply :).

I watched the classic "River's Edge" again last night, mostly to hear Crispin Glover say "Don't be a narc!" in that great "California" accent. Dennis Hopper has some pretty good scenes too. The original story the movie is based on took place near where I live and they totally captured that time and place. :D

[QUOTE=Dave;427383]The Devil and Daniel Johnson is a great documentary about a disturbed songwriter with a big cult following. Funny, sad, moving, and a great introduction to a really unique artist.QUOTE]
