View Full Version : Feminism And Masculism

Is it possible to be feminist and masculist at the same time?
Is this a man's world that oppresses women or are both men and women equally oppressed?
Is it right to teach girls to be mothers and wives?
And boys to be fighters and soldiers?

Ooh, you followed my idea! :) . What do you mean by "masculinist", though?
I definitely think there's a lot of sexism in the world, and not just the more obvious forms of opression, but the more subtle ones like I mentioned - that we automatically accept males as the default person. Things that are considered male are also often considered superior, which is why if a girl learns karate or follows football it's cool, but if a guy takes ballet or watches soap operas he's likely to be ridiculed. So in a sense, men are also opressed, because their options for accepted behavior are much more limited.

^^Yes, that's what I had in mind. Everyone has to stick to their gender role. But also, there are situations where men are discriminated against, like when they are victims of violence. Imagine public reaction to a group of men beating another man and a group of men beating a woman.

Yes, imagine! Slapped wrists for rapists, and derisory sentences. Meanwhile, the woman is scarred for life. Imagine indeed...
I think what she meant was that violence is violence, regardless of upon whom or by whom it is perpetrated.

They destroy lives, and give up all their right when they rape women or children.
Or men.
But why do people do that? Yes, some of them have mental disorders obviously, but plenty of rapists are completely sane persons who were taught that violence is the right way to get things that they want. Aren't boys encouraged to be violent? And aren't girls encouraged to be smiling, pretty and gentle?

I am in favour of sterilising rapists, and paedophiles too.
My English could be failing me here - you mean (chemical) castration, right? I've often heard people suggest that and I think it's great if they agree (some do, as a part of their therapy), but I don't think we have a right to do it, just like we can't cut the arms off thieves. Also, it doesn't always help, as many rapists don't rape just for sexual reasons, but because of much more complicated issues (wanting to feel powerful, etc.). I once heard of a rapist who received this therapy, so he continued raping with other means (I won't go into details, lets just say unfortunatley you don't need a "working" penis to molest someone).

I recall a game of pool I had with a man several years back, I thrashed him. He got really offended and arsey about it, which amused me.
Such wanky, gender-defined behaviour mystifies me. If I am capable of thrashing a man at pool, why shouldn't I?
Were you distracting him by leaning over the table? ;)

"Is it possible to be feminist and masculist at the same time?"
yes, because if men don't emancipate then nothing will ever change for the better.
"Is this a man's world that oppresses women or are both men and women equally oppressed?"
women atill earn less than men, women still have only a tiny percentage of high positions in this world, women still have only a tiny percentage of leading positions in this world. there are only a handful of female presidents in this world. women only got the right to vote since a very short time in history. I think that answers the question.
"Is it right to teach girls to be mothers and wives?"
if that's ALL you teach them then no. if it's taught in addition to being a human being with a right to chose her own destiny and having other oportunities in this society then yes. girls do give birht - indeed.
"And boys to be fighters and soldiers?"
well who would have the right to reduce a human being to such a fate? no. noone is destined to be anything particular at all. and who needs fighters and soldiers in a civilized society anyway.
peace and love.

I believe that women and men should be treated equally in all walks of life, but particularly under the law. Right now, that is, unfortunately, not the case, anywhere in the world.
According to the patriarchal system (which is the system that we all live under right now), some men must be oppressed. For example: homosexual men; non-white men; or men with disabilities. While all men are privileged to an extent in a patriarchal system, some men have less privilege than other men.

I have a problem with the word "equally". Men and women have different needs, and if you treat people with different needs equally, that results in inequality.
While all men are privileged to an extent in a patriarchal system, some men have less privilege than other men.
Yet all men (speaking of western world) are discriminated against when it comes to child custody and parental rights.

'Equal' does not mean 'the same'. I don't believe that there is anybody in the world who believes that people are the same. Equal means having equal rights, not being considered as inferior.
We're equal, but different, we're equal, but different, it's obvious... :D

It's all about standards. What kind of standards both men and women
have and how they treat each other, or mistreat as the case may be.
Unfortunately there are still men who think it's okay to drink or take
drugs to excess and live a bachelor lifestyle, while the "little woman"
stays at home looking after the babies.
I will jump up and cheer the day I see that women stop allowing themselves
to be treated as mere "chattels".
On a current affairs program the other night there was a thirty two year
old woman who had ten children, only three had the same father,
the rest she admitted had different fathers.
This woman was quite happy with her lot and said she'll have
more babies. She was not religious and seemed to not have any
hopes for the future for employment or education for herself.
Her sixteen year old daughter was pregnant.
What a sad situation that is......
Who's fault? Hers for opening her legs too many times? Her Mother's?
The men who "took advantage" of her.
The media has prolonged the "over sexualization" of young girls
and I wonder what became of feminism!
I mean really, it wasn't just meant to be something for lesbians.
I'm sure all men and women would be happier and it would be a much
fairer society if our girls and boys grew up with a genuine healthy
respect for each other and each other's bodies.......
Oh my god, it's Robby!
March 1, 2007, 03:39 AM
while the "little woman"
stays at home looking after the babies
yes, this is a problem
since most modern women tend to be terrible mothers
and even poorer fathers
I cannot wait for the day when the bias in our courts against men and fathers comes to an end!

I don't know...why is it that women drive you to that? Do you want to have a relationship or do you just want sex? If you just want sex then I'm sure things will be fine...relationships are tricky though...and I have yet to figure them out myself.
I'm miserable because I'm 20 and I want a serious relationship...and no girl I've ever been with has wanted that. They want to go out and party and drink and sleep with random people. And I am...I guess...old fashioned and I just want one person. So...I can't get someone to stay...I can easily get a girlfriend but I don't see a point in it if it isn't going to be serious.
Well...it is women and my lack of being able to love one that loves me that drives me to hate myself. Not to mention the fact I hate the part of me that wants to be with a boy. Errr...reality is too hard for me...I'd rather not experience it.

You are not unable to love. It is the other people around you.
The part about lack of being able to love driving you to hate yourself.
Oh! Stop! It's not your fault!
It just means you haven't met the right person.

The feminist movement as we have come to know it in recent decades is fundamentally a "con." It is as filled with falsehood, inaccuracy, and foolishness as astrology or parapsychology. As it is considered treasonous to criticise a sister feminist, no standards of accuracy or honesty are ever enforced. Hyperbole and deceit thus become the formula for success, "peer review" playing no role in reining in misinformation. Any would-be feminist who raises scholarly objections to the rampant misinformation ( Christina Hoff Sommers , Camille Paglia , Wendy McElroy , Elaine Showalter , Erin Pizzey , Elizabeth Loftus, etc.) is branded an 'enemy of women' and is drummed out of the movement.

Calling something 'garbage' is hardly a critique. You have been on my back since day one. I have never bullied anyone in my life, nor am I 'mean' in my real life or online.
You have consistently attacked me and you are now clearly upset by my retaliation.

We put those silent letters in to upset Americans:D My favourite is 'Center' instead of 'Centre', that's the way children write:D or 'aluminum' instead of 'aliminium'.
But seriously, I think most languages have silent letters.
English should always be very economical, very concise. I despise people that use 'so', 'like' 'basically' etc when speaking, it's moronic and superfluous. More than that, I hate baseball hats and the morons that wear them.
Other than that I love the USA!

yes, I mean aluminium, but you don't have your own 'aluminum', it's the same metal.
'Aluminium is found primarily in bauxite ore and is remarkable for its ability to resist corrosion (due to the phenomenon of passivation) and its light weight. The metal is used in many industries to manufacture a large variety of products and is very important to the world economy. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and very important in other areas of transportation and building.'

it is aluminium, although aliminium is also used in certain industries in the uk.
The one thing that really gets my goat is when people talk about bands in the singular, as if the band is a person. i.e. The smiths is performing tonight, instead of The Smiths ARE performing tonight.
However 'is' is appropraite, in the following sentence:
The Smiths is dead. I find this an acceptable use of is.
Anyway i've never been overly bother about spelling and grammar on message boards (i make enough mistakes) but the use of language does give me a tick or thirty

actually, even though it sounds funny, and i dont say it this way myself, I think saying "the Smiths is performing" is grammatically correct (in a sense). Because, THE SMITHS is ONE band. just like, say for instance ..."Radiohead is performing tonight." you dont say "Radiohead are performing tonight", even though there's 4 (i believe?) people in the band, its still one band, one entity.
At least this is what i remember being taught back in junior high but that was over 10 years ago, so its possible I am mistaken.

But the Smiths are'nt doing the performing, that is just the collective name chosen for the performers.
I do say radiohead are performing tonight, i have not heard many english people saying that they 'is'. Just sounds a bit 'lord of the rings'. No offence intended but its just that i can comprehend that radiohead is made up of a group of 4 people so they are playing to me rather than is playing to me.
I mean you would'nt say radiohead is great to a friend would you?
Sorry to sound like a bastard, but i see this as more of an interesting discussion and no offence intended. Anyway i;m dyslexic apparently, so i'm not one to talk...apparently
