Well we all know the Smiths boxset is coming out this year! (OK it isn't - word is it will be "delayed" until early next year - when it will be a revised Silver anniversary metalic finished effort. So OK We know whats in it...Horn versions of this, unreleased versions of that, instrumentals etc,etc,etc....but do you realise ths will finally heal the rift!!! The royalties from this will mean that all court procedings will end!!! So maybe this "silver cloud" from a meaningless boxset! all monies due will be satisfied. Maybe a Smiths 25th Anniversary tour is on!!!

The boxset WILL slip from this years schedule!!!
The 25th year of the Smiths will be acknowledged in the revised packaging.
Unrealsed tracks will be included
All royalty issues will be resolved - if expected sales expectaions are met.
4 out of 5 ex-Smiths have agreed in principle to reformation.
So I am serious, YES!

I bloody hope not.
Marr has done fuck all that's any good since the first Electronic album, and I for one do not want to see Morrissey reduced to I Love The 80s tours with the other three/four band members.

Thing is, what possible reason would Morrissey have to reform the Smiths? He's just had a number 1 album, sold out a 30 date UK tour and co-headlined the V-Festival.
Just because there are people who think ROTT is crap, is not enough of a reason for him to go back to Marr and co.
So why do you think this would be the best thing to happen to Moz for a long time?

I think you are right. I love ROTT but i would love The Smiths getting back together more then anything. I think Marr would bring the best out of Moz.

That's a perfectly valid point, I don't agree with it, but I certainly won't have a go at you for thinking it :)
However, (!) based on Marr's output in the last decade I struggle to see any evidence that him and Moz would make great records, other than the argument of "well they did 20 years ago". Twenty years ago, Gary Lineker was scoring 40 goals for Everton, but I doubt he could do it now.

emm i think just on Johnny's guitar playing should be enough. I belive there is something missing is the music department throughout Morrissey's solo work. But don't think i have having a go at Boz, Alain etc. I love moz's solo work i believe moz has made better albums with the band but when it comes to song quality i belive the smiths made better songs. Does any of that make any scene ?

Well, being a good guitar player (which Marr was and is) doesn't automaticly make you a good song-writer (which Marr was), but that's another argument for another day.
I presume you're trying to say that the Smiths were a better singles band, whereas the Morrissey 'band' is a better albums band?

Questions for Reggie
Not saying you are wrong or anything, but how do you know this will solve all royalty issues?
Do you mean, if this gets released, only Mike Joyce gets paid and then everyone is evens? If so, we are then bailing Morrissey out of his 'legal obligation' (by that I mean the court order, not saying if I agree with the case or not, fact is the law says he owes the money).
Secondly, where have the other 4 ex Smiths stated they are up for a reunion or are you privvy to information not in the public domain?

Ermm, I'm not trying to break your spirit but I remember this 1:4 person saying that he would rather eat his own testicles than reform the Smiths... Don't you think that's somehow, well... a "NO!" And I don't remember Johnny Marr flopping around the room in excitement when it comes to reunion. So...
Besides: I don't want them to get together again (maybe for just one show, that would be okay). They could do perfect and yet wouldn't meet our expectations.

i think the notion of a smiths reformation is singularly the worst thing i have ever heard, without question. what would be the point? what is the reason for one being necessary?

ALL GOOD [in this case GREAT] THINGS MUST COME TO AN END, and that end was 1987.
There's HATE among some of the SMITHS memebers and for them to come together to play/record would be totally fake, it'd only be for money.....It won't happen anyway......GOOD!
The only thing I do wish would happen...... is for me to be able to travel back in time to the mid 80's so that I could watch them perform live, I was only 7 when they disbanded :(

I think it would somehow belittle Moz's solo work. I just can't see him doing it.

The only Smiths reunion that I want to see is when The Smiths are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a couple of years. Hopefully, they'll play a couple of songs together just for the night of the induction ceremony, like The Police and Talking Heads did.

I think there's not a chance in hell for this to happen.
Fact is - their issues are not only financial. Settling the royalties pay-out would not solve a thing. Morrissey would still hate Joyce's guts no matter what and still have dubious feelings towards Marr and Rourke. And don't forget the fact that even if we put this thing aside, one can not overlook the fact that, in the past 20 years since the split, the whole band just drifted apart, musically, personally and otherwise and no amount of money or good intentions can overcome that. They've been offered A LOT of money to reunite for a few gigs and they said "No". That's the fact and you should deal with it.
Secondly, from my personal point of view - it has been a real struggle for Moz to step out of the "Smiths singer" box and step into his own. He is now an achieved solo artist with all hits and misses that come along. There's no way he's going to jeprodize that by stepping into something he worked hard to leave behind. He really doesn't need it and I kinda respect the fact that my favourite band isn't one of those bands that does "comeback" tours everytime they need some change for the groceries.
To wrap it up - The Smiths are a part of the past and regardless of how beautiful, wild and romantic that past is, they should stay in the past. I'd love to see them live but I respect their persistance in not allowing me to. I'd hate to see them fail my expectations and knowing how huge they are - they most likely would.
So I'd rather keep things at they are. Not at all bad, at least not from my point of view ...

Well, I hope they do put back the release date to next year, because that gives me a few months to reorganise my CDs to incorperate the set and work out how the f**k I'm going to make it fit. ROTT doesn't fit properly and it REALLY ANNOYS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Smiths reforming, if they hypothetically did reform and they were awful... I really honestly don't know what I'd do. I'd love to see a real Smiths concert, but I don't think it would feel like a real Smiths concert.

Although a Smiths reunion would be especially lovely, but Ive awoken from that dreamland when Moz declared he would rather eat his own testacle than reform ....subtle, no?
Ive learned to accept that the band has had their glory years and that a reunion wouldnt necessarily matter for me....What I would like is for Moz to forive Canada and come back:D

Why do you hate the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
I do recognize that it is fairly pointless...however, it doesn't do any harm, either, does it? I've never failed to enjoy the performances during the induction ceremonies...The Pretenders, Talking Heads, U2, just to name a few fantastic performances.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum itself is wonderful--I've been there a couple of times, and the exhibits are always interesting and thoughtfully curated.

Yes, it doesn't do any harm, but I hate self-congratulation/glorification/shoulder patting nonsense.

Joyce would be there, as he would be inducted along with the rest of them.
It's possible that the three of them could decide not to perform together. When The Ramones were inducted, they decided not to perform together, and so they chose another band (I actually think that it was Green Day) to perform a couple of their songs for them. This could be the case with The Smiths.
However, I'd like to think that Morrissey would decide to put aside all differences for the short period of time needed to rehearse and perform a couple of songs. Talking Heads hated each other, and they still managed to give a kick-A performance during their induction ceremony.

Er, when The Ramones were inducted, Joey Ramone and at least one other member of the band were no longer with us on this planet.....
that's why they did not perform on the night.

If Joyce went, you can bet your bottom dollar that Johnny wouldn't be there.
Did you know that he only agreed to do Manchester vs. Cancer on the condition that Andy didn't invite Joyce?
I'm quite sure Andy would go no matter who else went. But Johnny and Joyce would not both be at it. Remember that Joyce sued Johnny as well as Moz, so IMO Johnny has just as much contempt towards Joyce as Morrissey.
As for The Man himself, he would NOT attend this under any circumstances. Aside from doing some Smiths songs in his setlists, he wants nothing to do with his old group.

You do realize that the Hall of Fame is not just doled out to the most deserving artist? There's a lot of politics involved. As well as that artists have to pay quite a lot of money to attend. The Sex Pistols told them to get lost when they were invited. I'd be very disappointed if Morrissey and Marr were to get involved, though I know Mike and Andy will probably turn up to anything they are invited to (as long as someone else is paying).

The idea of a reunion is horrifying to me! I really don't believe in those things. It's a little like that book by Steven King where they bring people back from the dead, and they do return, but as soulless monsters.
A bit off topic, but was anybody there when Sex Pistols reunited at the Roskilde Festival in '96? I didn't go see them, but I've heard about it and seen the footage. Horrible. It seems they had completely forgotten who they used to be. They stopped the concert because a couple of people threw bottles onto the stage - which I believe was a bit of a tradition in the old days? Anyway, they left and never reappeared. Which is a good thing, but they really ruined something with that gig I believe.

I feel that it would only be fair if the Box Set makes restitution to the parties owed royalties from long ago. I don't know if they should have another go at reunion, I do like the idea of one show, or one tour as the smiths, the sound will be different but the perceptions from the core fan base will remain the same. IT will only be positive, I recall reading somewhere that MOZ was offered 5 million $$ to do it and he turned it down. That bugs me b/c personally I would want to see/ hear their original work live and compare it to how it has evolved thru time musically. This will probably be argued up and down, but even if they attempt to record new work, and only if material is created from the Smiths principles of musical art, from originality, distinct and freshness of sound, which both MOZ and MARR have maintained it can work.
Now here is probably what really is buggin MOZ and MARR, the contract, how to split the cash. Because they would make so much more money now from one reunion show/tour/ live album then all of their 80's tours combined. I know who cares about the money right? oh well.......
