Ok, this thread will probably die on its arse, but here goes:
I've just started a really difficult post grad. couse at uni, and I know there are lots of our members who are currently doing coursework/exams/revision, so I just thought it would be really good to have a place where we can offer each other support and cry on each others shoulders when it feels like it's never going to end, and offer advice if we can. This is, of course, when we get the time. I'm actually ment to be researching education laws in history, but somehow, I've ended up here. So, what's everybody else doing?

Currently trying to study for a last exam and thinking about the final, huge dissertation. (Modern Philology>Italian Literature). Should have done that 10 years ago.
When I'm working I think about my studies, when I'm studying I think about my work, when I'm sleeping I think about my life.
Something wrong here, I know.

Stressful enough? *sobs* I am the world's biggest procrastinator, and working on the computer doesn't help since I'm constantly surfing the net instead of writing the fucking paper - my boyfriends' already threatened to disconnect us ;) .

excellent idea for a thread!
i will, undoubtedly, be posting here, in order to avoid studying, from now on! i'm almost finished a Master's in Social Policy and "only" have a dissertation to write.
it's 20,000 fucking words about disability and social security policy, in the u.k. (fascinating stuff, eh?! well, it is, to me, so leave me alone!)
when it's done i'll be dead proud of it, but i'm finding it hard to get the fucker started.
ideally, i would disappear off, to a cottage on a remote hillside, with no distractions and loads of books and remain there for the next four months, emerging in jan. '07 with my completed dissertation in hand and a beaming smile on my face.
alas, life is not like that, so i guess i'll just have to get on with it. :(

Also, my exam period starts in December...So I'll guess I'll be bombing this thread then.

You know that CD will come between us forever!!!
Well, I've done my first lesson in teaching English lang/lit, been given another assignment, learnt how to encourage children to use ICT across the curriculum, done 4 chapters of reading on maths, written up all my notes from toay, and now I'm just going to eat quickly and do 2 more chapters of reading!!! The next person to tell me how easy it is to be a teacher is going to have the National Curriculum rammed up their arse! Oh, but I can't do that until it arrives! That's correct, the publishers of our most important, without which it is nigh on impossible to work, and/ or the Goverment, decided for fun not to let universities order the National Curriculum this year but to make each and every student ring up individually and then wait for God knows how long until they send it out! And for extra fun, nobody told the uni until just before we started our course!! I don't know why I pay my taxes.
Anyway, I'm more or less on top of everything right now, and yes I knowI shouldn't be on the forum, but it is litrally a study break. I'm being sooo good!!
Good luck for tomorrow everyone, we can do this!

I forgot to say, I'm sure my ICT tutor is a Morrissey fan!! You know how sometimes it's sooo obvious without asking? He has a little mini quiff and DMs and he just reeks of Moz!! I'm going to wear my Morrissey T- shirt to my next ICT lesson to see if he comments. I can see it now 'So, you havn't done any of your reading for this week because you spent last night handwashing your Morrissey T-shirt which you won't put in the washing machine because it's a bootleg and it might fall to bits? What an excellent teacher you will make'
If he is a Moz fan he might be a forum member! Oh God!! I'm doing my reading, I'm doing my reading please don't fail me!!

Well, I sometimes really want to listen to music when I study, but I know I can't because I know that I won't study good then. But music without lyrics or without good lyrics is good. Putting Smiths/Morrissey on, is suicide!

when i'm studying i have to keep everything off as it distracts me ... it's so funny how, when you're studying, everything allofasudden becomes so interesting - every crappy TV show that you never pay attention to outside of exam periods, radio, newspapers, spam e-mails or even moz-solo (how do you think I got so hooked on this?). So I turn everything off, cram for an hour, make a pause to play some music and unwind and then go back. I wish I could be like so many of my friends who can memorize things just by casually reading them while sitting in the noisiest places but I can't ... it's too damn difficult to keep focus these days but i'm doing my best.

Working on my dissertation for my Ph.D and its a total nightmare... mostly because when I sit down to do some work on it, I end up here for hours on end instead of doing what I should be doing. Too bad I can't find some 100 lb head to just write this thing for, then brief it to me so I can defend it. Damn my luck.

Mmmmmm
September 25, 2006, 02:35 AM
Its no treat marking those damn papers and exams either. Mind you, I get paid to do it which makes it more lucritive but no less agonizing. Tip for y'all:
Avoid:
1. Repeating yourself over and over and over and over again.
2. Being overly pretentious with jargon and incorrectly used Victorian-era polysyllables.
3. Quoting the likes of Morrissey in an expository essay on the evolution of the jellyfish
4. Stealing other people's work (How I love to nail plagiarists)
5. Woeful stories about why its late. Tell me that it will be in on... and make sure it is.
If you hate the topics you are writing about, perhaps you are in the wrong field. Then again, exams and major papers are frequently just hoops to discourage the half-hearted. Eventually you will forget them all and the stress they caused, but you will remember every gig you attended during these years (that is unless you load up on the hooch first).

Well another week without getting any study done. I can see light at the end of the tunnel...but it still seems so difficult to get there. I do find that studying with music on is helpful for me, at the moment it is Ringleaders, although I don't mind a bit of Yeah Yeah Yeah's or David Bowie sometimes.
If only I could sit down and get something done! My current style of working is reading everything I can find, it feels like I can never read enough. But this leaves me with little time to write anything.

Oh, I know what that's like. Have you also got an obsessive streak in you? ;) The key is to say: ok, my goal for today is just to write something, even it's not completely right or perfect. Once you've written something, even if you'll end up fixing it later, it makes everything a lot easier.

Dunno about everyone else, but I thought French was easier, but maybe because it was my grandmother's sole language?! I just wanted to read Rimbaud and Flaubert. Friends who took German were struggling. One of them is in Germany now, and no one understands her German so she has to speak English all of the time. Maybe you should think about what you'd like to read in each language and go from there?? Also, if you're in the UK, either will probably be good. Language instruction in the US is appalling. Good luck.

Really? I've always heard it as an example for a realy difficult language. My boyfriend took it for six years in high school and the only thing he knows how to say is "my name is so and so, I live in this and that street..." ;)

I'm in Israel actually, and our language instruction is probably not that good either (re: boyfriend's French :) ). I'm in university though, so it should be better, right? I'm not doing it to read anything in particular, only because it's a requirement. A stupid one at that, I really don't see how learning a language for 2 years will enable me to read academic material in it.

Ask elder students which exam is easier to pass! Because you won't learn either of the languages, so just save yourself the trouble.
However, there is a slight possibility that you will find German easier because it's more similar to English (in case you have never learned Latin, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese.)
On the other hand, if you would really like to learn the language (and dedicate some extra time and money to the cause) it's easier to learn French because they invest more in promoting their language and culture. There is probably a French Cultural Centre where you live, so they should be able to help.

Dutch sounds German when you pronounce it, but German has really more difficult grammar.
Well, it could be that it's not that difficult, because I've never learned Dutch of course! And yes, we're able to hear French more, I'm now 17 and we've been getting French at school for 7 years now. It's our most important second language (because half of Belgium speaks French and France borders Belgium!) French is a really important language, but if you want to know which one is more fun to learn, I'd say German. Love the pronunciation (I'm always having difficulties with the French 'r' !!!!).

Well, there it is, "THE" day, day of my big exam that is tomorrow. I have spent the last month and a half cramming like an idiot, absorbing all the names and theories and more names and more theories all in hope that it will end all my suffering tomorrow.
During my very static days of studying I got hooked to this forum which is a real success knowing how allergic I am to forums. In case I pass I can't promise I'll be as active here as I am now but then again, maybe I've just said this so that I could get some of you to pray that I pass, get a life and get off your back! ;)
I'm now fairly stressed and tired but positive that it'll all be fine ... one day. I'll keep you posted on the outcome.
Good luck to all other fellow sufferers!

If he's in your course then it's better not to do anything yet, since you're going to have to keep seeing him every week even if it doesn't work out. I also had a gorgeous guy in one of my courses this year. I wouldn't have done anything even if I were single - he's way out of my league. Anyway.... back to studying! n I have been trying to get an adaptor that will go from my printer to my laptop. I have been hunting all around my area, waisting hours that I needed for studying. Three shops have been out of stock, and don't know when they will get more. Today, I spent an hour and a half getting in to town on the way back from uni to go to one specific shop They had it! I bought it! I had a very slow and frustrating jpurney hom on the bus while I thought about all the things I still had to do. I rushed in, went to plug in the adapter to the laptop... and they have sold me an incompatable lead. They were ment to be a specialist shop! I sat on the floor and cried! I know I can order one on the internet, but I don't know exactly what it's called, and I am desperate for the printer. So tomorrow, at 9 am, I will not be getting Moz tickets, I will be exchanging the adapter for my printer before uni. Thank you very much Maplan Electrics FOR RUINING EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Modest Proposal To Abolish Universities
About Time
by Fred Reed
July 21, 2006
I think it is time to close the universities, and perhaps prosecute the professoriat under the RICO act as a corrupt and racketeering-influenced organization. Universities these days have the moral character of electronic churches, and as little educational value. They are an embarrassment to civilization.
I know this. I am sitting in my office in Jocotepec, consorting with a bottle of Padre Kino red—channeling the good Padre if you will. It is insight cheap at the price. A few bucks a liter.
To begin with, sending a child to a university is irresponsible. These days it costs something like a quarter of a million dollars, depending on your choice of frauds. The more notorious of these intellectual brothels, as for example Yale, can cost more. This money, left in the stock market for forty hears, or thirty, would yield enough to keep the possessor in comfort, with sufficient left over for his vices. If the market took a downturn, he could settle for just the vices. In the intervening years, he (or, most assuredly, she) could work in a dive shop.
See? By sending our young to college, we are impoverishing them, and ourselves, and sentencing them to a life of slavery in some grim cubicle painted federal-wall green. Personally, I’d rather be chained in a trireme.
Besides, the effect of a university education can be gotten more easily by other means. If it is thought desirable to expose the young to low propaganda, any second-hand bookstore can provide copies of Trotsky, Marcuse, Gloria Steinem, and the Washington Post. These and a supply of Dramamine, in the space of a week, would provide eighty percent of the content of a college education. A beer truck would finish the job. The student would save four years which could more profitably be spent in selling drugs, or in frantic cohabitation or—wild thought—in reading, traveling, and otherwise cultivating himself.
This has been known to happen, though documentation is hard to find.
To the extent that universities actually try to teach anything, which is to say to a very limited extent, they do little more than inhibit intelligent students of inquiring mind. And they are unnecessary: The professor’s role is purely disciplinary: By threats of issuing failing grades, he ensures that the student comes to class and reads certain things. But a student who has to be forced to learn should not be in school in the first place. By making a chore of what would otherwise be a pleasure, the professor instills a lifelong loathing of study.
The truth is that universities positively discourage learning. Think about it. Suppose you wanted to learn Twain. A fruitful approach might be to read Twain. The man wrote to be read, not analyzed tediously and inaccurately by begowned twits. It might help to read a life of Twain. All of this the student could do, happily, even joyously, sitting under a tree of an afternoon. This, I promise, is what Twain had in mind.
But no. The student must go to a class in American Literatue, and be asked by some pompous drone, “Now, what is Twain trying to tell us in paragraph four?” This presumes that Twain knew less well than the professor what he was trying to say, and that he couldn’t say it by himself. Not being much of a writer, the poor man needs the help of a semiliterate drab who couldn’t sell a pancake recipe to Boy’s Life. As bad, the approach suggests that the student is too dim to see the obvious or think for himself. He can’t read a book without a middleman. He probably ends by hating Twain.
When I am dictator, anyone convicted of literary criticism will be drawn and quartered, dragged through the streets as a salutary lesson to the wise, and dropped in the public drains. [you go, Fred! :)]
Why is the ceiling spinning? Maybe I’m caught in a gravitational anomaly.
The truth is that anyone who wants to learn anything can do it better on his own. If you want to learn to write, for example, lock yourself in a room with copies of Strunk and White, and Fowler, and a supply of Padre Kino, and a loaded shotgun. The books will provide technique, the good Padre the inspiration, and you can use the shotgun on any tenured intrusion who offers advice. They tend to be spindly. A twenty-gauge should be sufficient.
Worse, these alleged academies, these dark nights of the soul encourage moral depravity. This is not just my opinion. It can be shown statistically. Virtually all practitioners of I-banking, advertising, and law began by going to some university. Go to Manhattan and visit any prestigious nest of foul attorneys engaged in circumventing the law. Most will have attended schools in the Ivy League. The better the school, the worse the outcome. Any trace of principle, of contemplative wonder, will have been squeezed out of them as if they were grapes.
Perhaps once universities had something to do with the mind, the arts, with reflection, with grasping or grasping at man’s place in a curious universe. No longer. Now they are a complex scam of interlocking directorates. They employ professors, usually mediocre, to sell diplomas, usually meaningless, needed to get jobs nobody should want, for the benefit of corporations who want the equivalent of docile assembly-line workers.
See, first you learn that you have to finish twelve years of grade school and high school. The point is not to teach you anything; if it were, they would give you a diploma when you passed a comprehensive test, which you might do in the fifth grade. The point is to accustom you to doing things you detest. Then they tell you that you need four more years in college or you won’t be quite human and anyway starve from not getting a job. For those of this downtrodden bunch who are utterly lacking in independence, there is graduate school.
The result is twenty years wasted when you should have been out in the world, having a life worth talking about in bars—riding motorcycles, sacking cities, lolling on Pacific beaches or hiking in the Northwest. You learn that structure trumps performance, that existence is supposed to be dull. It prepares you to spend years on lawsuits over somebody else’s trademarks or simply going buzzbuzzbuzz in a wretched federal office. Only two weeks a year do you get to do what you want to do. This we pay for?
What if you sent your beloved daughter to a university and they sent you back an advertising executive?
I think we’re having an earthquake. When the floor stops heaving, I’m going to send out for more Padre Kino.

I am studying five Highers at the moment, and I put in zero effort. I really need to get stuck into all of this studying malarky if I want to succeed, but I just can't seem to get started.
It's terrible; I hate myself for it.
Any ideas on how I can get rid of my laziness?
Thanks.

Make studying the purpose of your life? (i.e. don't have a life! or the internet!)

I do actually turn the internet off if I'm really working to stop the temptation. I seem to have let housework go a bit so I can study more. Actually, this weekend I've relaxed a bit because I worked so hard last week to try and keep on top of everything. My placememnts nearly over already, I can't believe it!

I find surrounding yourself with other studying people (e.g. in the library) often helps. This a. motivates you b. makes you feel less sorry for yourself and c. stops you from being on the internet/TV all day (key, for me anyway :) ). Good luck!

I have an essay on the 'Glass Menagerie' that needs to be in by the end of this month, and I haven't yet begun looking at it. What's more, I need to re-read the play because this is coursework I am retaking. Any thoughts on how I could manage my time little by little in getting this done, because I still have History work keeping me busy and I need to figure out a way of getting the work done without it hampering all my other subjects?

If you are really sad like me, et a wall planner, and write what you want to have achieved at the end of each week on it, then you can cross it off as you go. You do have to stick to it though.

Fishy, I would love to be able to be asexual, but I just aren't and women always string me along and then throw me down the well. :p It's most upsetting.
