First off, Sophie is uber-adorable. I'm wondering what kind of cat she is. I adopted my cat Rose almost 5 yrs ago but she was no kitten. I'm wondering if they're not similar since she has the same cracked-out kitty look most of the time. See below. And she does do the typical maine-coone paw cross-over thing. Does Sophie do that?

I'm almost convinced that Sir Friendly has some Maine Coon in him somewhere down the line. He's the youngest of my cats but the biggest. He does the paw cross thing and loves water. He plays in the water bowl all the time and has even been known to sit in it at least once. He walks around with his tail curled under like a monkey. If you wet the last two inches of his tail, he'll spin around in a circle and chase it. Recently, I've caught him doing it when it's dry. Too funny.

At the vet hospital where I worked, we had a Maine Coon as a patient. He was 28 lbs and huge. He was my favorite. If I ever spend money on a purebred cat, I'll definitely have a Maine Coon.

The expression on Rose's face in that first picture is priceless. :)

Presumably, they are genetically fond of the taste which strikes me as really odd. Do you think cats only allowed themselves to be domesticated so that they could have access to fish?

Hmmm...countries like Japan it clearly doesn't apply to your theory. Historically fish is easily available to both humans and cats in Japan.

good question! My cat doesn't care much for human food, but if I have prawns or tuna (has to be in brine) in the house, she will go absolutly demented. She tried to stick her head in my mouth last time I had prawns! (mind you, that might be the diet she's on! Cruel mummy!) (oh, and she likes very rare steak too, sometimes)

They do fight (he wins every time, she fights on her back! duh) but they love even more :)

awwwwwwwwwwwww! well, there was already a grown up cat living in the house, and I brought home this teeny scap of fur, who was met with sulking and anger, and who responded by hissing very lodly and frightening scardy tom cat to death :D she adored him, following him around and generally being annoying, and he wasn't mad on her, but he put up with her. When grown up kitty and family left, she looked for him for days, but I just couldn't take on another cat. maybe when we have more room, I might look at adopting a middle aged kitty :) I do worry about her being alone all day

Bobby & Kate come the closest. I know she totally digs him and he likes her best when she's cleaning his head. I think they actually slept together once ... and that was a year ago. Here's the pic.

lulu does that. She spends a good part of the night scuffling around the flat, scratching at doors, running up and down on the laminate, playing in her litter tray :rolleyes: if I wake her up, I get greeted with this :angry: :gun: she really is a vicious kitty if she's woken up.
Love all the pictures of snuggling cats, makes me want another! Wish we had room for a friend for Lulu :( not a kitten, a nice, soppy, middle aged male would be perfect :) for some reason, I think lulu would take more kindly to a boy than another girl

Today is a bittersweet day for me. It's the 2nd year anniversary of the passing of my cat Julie who was quite simply the best and most loyal friend I had for 18 years. I found the first and last pic of her & me & included them in this (not-so-great) montage. I am still so incredibly sad that she's gone but I wouldn't trade the sadness for not having known her and having had her as a huge part of my life for so long. I'm sure anyone in this thread can relate.

You'd better promise me you'll be around for 10 more.

I need some advice about my cat.

She's about 2 or 3, and has been spayed.

But, for some reason, she keeps on going through sporadiac heat cycles. =| She just got over a really short one yesterday, and the previous one was a couple of weeks ago.

I plan on taking her to the vet as soon as possible, but I just want to know what everyon else thinks...

Like I said, she's been spayed, and she has not done this at all the entirety of the time I've had her (I got her back around in July/August of last year?) She's NEVER done this before...

I read the cutest story at school today, called 'Tubby Tabby' :D it really made me think of lulu. The cat in the book looked just like her!

I'm remembering now that a week or so after Julie was gone, ROTT came out. I popped the CD in my car on the way into work and "I Will See You in Far Off Places" filled my volvo. I instantly thought of Julie so for me, that song will always hold a very special place in my heart.

White patch on her back is very unusual, isn't it? :)

When we got her as a kitten at work she was in a bad state, thin and had a infection or something at her back and near her tail. We had to get it treated and it grew in white and at the tail patchy.

Lulu agrees with this. All 'mean mummy' (ie, me) does is stick up photos of fat cats by her food bowl to reminder why she needs a diet :D

This is my Russian Blue - Mora. She'll be 14 years old in July. My husband thinks she's snooty, but she's just a little shy and cautious around strangers, just like me.

This is our tabby Kurtyns, my husband's cat when I first met him - he is responsible for the strange name and spelling - she used to climb the curtains as a kitten. (I was initially attracted to future husband because he had a cat. And he loved his cat). Since we married and combined cat families Mora and Kurtyns have kept their distance, but they are kinda friendly to each other in an icy way. Women! Kurtyns is also about 14 years old. She greets everyone at the door. She patrols our windows like a security guard. And she loves donuts. She once broke into a closed cabinet, knocked down a box of powdered sugar donuts, tore through the cellophane lid, nibbled on about 4 of them and then left behind a trail of powdered paw prints.

And THIS huge hunk of a kitty is our tabby Tommy Boy - aka Sir Thomas, Garfield or Lump. We saw him at Petsmart while buying food for the girls about 5 years ago. He was this HUGE former stud muffin that the shelter folks loved, but no adopters were interested in him because he was older (3 years) and looked pretty rough. My husband fell in love with him but I hesitated because I was afraid he'd beat up our girls. After almost a month of visiting him, hoping that they'd tell us he finally found a good home, I gave in. I just couldn't bear to leave him alone in his cage one more day.

Oh, there were days when I questioned my sanity. This huge former alley cat was frightened of his own shadow, and our two girls. He had one illness after another, he decimated our carpets and our furniture. I spent many sleepless nights trying to re-train him with the litterbox. He kept licking chunks of fur off of his front legs and we thought he had allergies but the vet diagnosed him with anxiety. Seriously! Finally, after about 6 months he started to calm down. He realized that we weren't going to abandon him or abuse him, as I suspect he had been in the past :( He and Kurtyns are now in love, they groom each other and hang out together all day. He also loves to chase Mora who secretly taunts him with her aloofness. He's about 8 years old now.

All 3 cats are wonderful with our 2 cat-lovin' kids, so in the end all is good.

My kitty and boyfriend's kitty in their Sunday finest. I guess boyfriend's cat is a crossdresser since she is a girl.

i got a cat at the weekend from a rescue home, she's called Pepper because she's got rhinitis and she constantly sneezes and has a runny nose. She's completely lethargic, and she's the only cat in history to not like chicken (in fact I think she's a complete veggie, moz would be pleased).

This is our tabby Kurtyns, my husband's cat when I first met him - he is responsible for the strange name and spelling - she used to climb the curtains as a kitten. (I was initially attracted to future husband because he had a cat. And he loved his cat). Since we married and combined cat families Mora and Kurtyns have kept their distance, but they are kinda friendly to each other in an icy way. Women! Kurtyns is also about 14 years old. She greets everyone at the door. She patrols our windows like a security guard. And she loves donuts. She once broke into a closed cabinet, knocked down a box of powdered sugar donuts, tore through the cellophane lid, nibbled on about 4 of them and then left behind a trail of powdered paw prints.

And THIS huge hunk of a kitty is our tabby Tommy Boy - aka Sir Thomas, Garfield or Lump. We saw him at Petsmart while buying food for the girls about 5 years ago. He was this HUGE former stud muffin that the shelter folks loved, but no adopters were interested in him because he was older (3 years) and looked pretty rough. My husband fell in love with him but I hesitated because I was afraid he'd beat up our girls. After almost a month of visiting him, hoping that they'd tell us he finally found a good home, I gave in. I just couldn't bear to leave him alone in his cage one more day.

Oh, there were days when I questioned my sanity. This huge former alley cat was frightened of his own shadow, and our two girls. He had one illness after another, he decimated our carpets and our furniture. I spent many sleepless nights trying to re-train him with the litterbox. He kept licking chunks of fur off of his front legs and we thought he had allergies but the vet diagnosed him with anxiety. Seriously! Finally, after about 6 months he started to calm down. He realized that we weren't going to abandon him or abuse him, as I suspect he had been in the past :( He and Kurtyns are now in love, they groom each other and hang out together all day. He also loves to chase Mora who secretly taunts him with her aloofness. He's about 8 years old now.

All 3 cats are wonderful with our 2 cat-lovin' kids, so in the end all is good.

I know :) she's not a cuddly cat normally, but just recently she's been coming and putting her front paws on me and having a cuddle. She likes to be near me, but noirmally she hates cuddles. Middle age has mellowed her I think!

my sister and her hubby have had their cat Rocky for nearly 20 years so he is an old boy, they don't have kids and rocky is totally their baby, spoiled rotten. If he is in their bed when they come to bed they don't move him they try to squeeze in and if Rocky is in with my sister and her hubby wants in the bed, its almost a no go.. and def no nooky :p Rocky won't like it lol!!

when I first got bumble, I used to have him in with me, I got him before the shbf was on the scene. When he arrived, he was clearly allergic to Bumble so that was that, Bumble was out, on occasion I wonder if I made the right decision as I looked at Bumble on the floor... :p

dear god, I love my cat so much.
she never begs for food (although occasionally she will dip her head into my glass but then decides she does not want what's in it.) she's totally chill when getting her nails clipped.
(if only she'd stop laying on me awkawrdly and waking me up during the night.)
Oh, and she let me put some weird bonnet thing on her. she didn't care one bit.

This youngster reminds me so much of a kitty I used to know. She was all black with a white tummy and paws and had these SHOCKINGLY white whiskers :D . She was such a beauty! She used to burrow under my blankets when I was asleep, put her front paws around my neck and rub her face under my chin. Such an affectionate little thing. She used to sit on my chest a lot too, having a chin rub, and if I used to put my hand down (when it got tired) she used to nudge my hand with her head until I started again!

My cat, Sammy keeps waking me up 4 times a night, crying and scratching at my bedroom door for food :mad:

i got a cat at the weekend from a rescue home, she's called Pepper because she's got rhinitis and she constantly sneezes and has a runny nose. She's completely lethargic, and she's the only cat in history to not like chicken (in fact I think she's a complete veggie, moz would be pleased).

Anyway, here she is... she's kind of scabby and hard to see but she's the friendliest thing ever.

For the first time in my adult life I have a cat, and I need advice:

Do you cat owners leave food at all times so he decides when to eat, or

do you feed them 2 or 3 times a day? (which I would hate)

Because this guy was raised by a wealthy family and ended up with me ;P
Among other things, if I leave a plate with food all night there, cockroaches will party.

Cats eat as much as they like, feed him sensible amount of food.

Feed him in the morning and in the evening, always give him plenty of fresh water. :)

I prepare the amount he's supposed to eat in a day and try to keep the plate with something at all times...

But if I do what you say, what do i do when he sits in front of his eating place and cries?? :tears:

You may find it very hard, but you have to ignore him.

Imagine you have a child who demands food all the time, but sensible parent does not feed a child whenever he/she asks food.

It may take some time, but eventually the cat gets used to it.

But... but... but....

It's up to you.
If you give him too much food, he'll be obese.
Eventually your vet will tell you to put him on diet.

I know. I have this problem all the time with my cat, who's on a diet. She will sit in front of her bowl, staring pitifully into its empty depths, crying endlessly, pawing around invisible food, dancing around me every time I get up...it's tough to ignore at first, but it's worth it. It's :o for all when the vet eyes the cat, scowls at you, and tells you it's time for a weight loss clinic :tears:

My cat is on a diet now and only gets 6 oz. of food a day. It still doesn't seem as though she is losing weight. She is an indoor cat and gets very little exercise. My vet gets angry with me every time I tell him that she eats as much as she pleases. She was actually pre-diabetic and since I didn't want to go that route, I am now feeding her less. She seems content with less food, but still has the big belly. She weighs about 18 pounds:

I know. I have this problem all the time with my cat, who's on a diet. She will sit in front of her bowl, staring pitifully into its empty depths, crying endlessly, pawing around invisible food, dancing around me every time I get up...
Oh God! That's painful! :tears: He's far from fat yet, I was more interested in eating hours more than quality/quantity

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! What a sweetheart! I feed her at 6 in the evening and between 6 and 9 in the morning. This keeps her going most of the day.

Aw, he's also very cute.
Your sister is very lucky to have someone trustworthy to look after her cat when she's away.

Normally you feed a pet in the morning before go to work and in the evening when you got home.

It's easy to set the meal time.
