Mel Carter: Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill Me (1965)

This song has been running through my head all day. You might think it's a weird song to post here, but there's a story to go along with it and where better to post this stuff than morrissey-solo?

In another life, I did some volunteer work with these two old teddy boys. Real stand-up guys. They were from Memphis, but had spent the last 30 years or so working on oil rigs before retiring to Florida. I assumed they were brothers because they were nearly identical: the same deep copper suntans, rough hands, and the sort of faces you get from years of hard work out in the elements.

One night we were at an awful, stuffy civic event. You could see they'd made an effort with their freshly greased quiffs, bolo ties, and perfect sideburns. About halfway through this dirge, one got up and had a few words with the deejay, and about ten minutes later this song

http://download.yousendit.com/D680CCD12E5E0625

rolled out of the speakers. Then, without even looking at one another, they clasped hands. You would never have known it unless you were sitting right next to them, as I was. The little one leaned over to me with a light in his eyes I'd never seen and said, "It's our anniversary and this is our song."

When we said goodbye that night I gave them both a big hug, hoping that some of that magic might rub off. Then I walked home through the park humming this song.

"...Well I see Jane's awake --

She sends her regards.
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.

If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.

And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear"

Ocean Rain Lyrics

All at sea again
And now my hurricanes have brought down this ocean rain
To bathe me again
My ship's a sail
Can you hear its tender frame
Screaming from beneath the waves
Screaming from beneath the waves

All hands on deck at dawn
Sailing to sadder shores
Your port in my heavy storms
Harbours the blackest thoughts

I'm at sea again
And now your hurricanes have brought down this ocean rain
To bathe me again

Can you hear its tender frame

The song, it's beautiful. I was compelled to play it twice while watching the storm roll in (true bliss). I'm buying that bad boy when it comes out... I used to listen to Air compulsively, so this will fill that space a bit.

As ever, thanks:D

A re-edited version of the track was released by 4AD, a couple of days ago, as a single; I'm sure it will be carried soon in the States.

Campigner - Neil Young

I am a lonely visitor.
I came too late to cause a stir,
Though I campaigned all my life
towards that goal.
I hardly slept the night you wept
Our secret's safe and still well kept
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got
Soul.

Traffic cops are all color blind.
People steal from their own kind.
Evening comes to early for a stroll.
Down neon streets the streaker streaks.
The speaker speaks,
but the truth still leaks,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got it,
Soul.

The podium rocks in the crowded waves.
The speaker talks of the beautiful saves
That went down long before
he played this role
For the hotel queens and the magazines,
Test tube genes and slot machines
Where even Richard Nixon got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got it,
Soul.

Hospitals have made him cry,
But there's always a freeway in his eye,
Though his beach just got
too crowded for his stroll.
Roads stretch out like healthy veins,
And wild gift horses strain the reins,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got
Soul.

I am a lonely visitor.
I came too late to cause a stir,
Though I campaigned all my life
towards that goal.

The Lesser Saints (mp3) (http://download.yousendit.com/F5C7B48C2387FD0B)

At a seaside home for convalescence,
I took his name in vain during piano lessons.
Three nuns like shadows came and dragged me up the stairs,
then beat me black and blue with my book of prayers.

I closed my eyes until they were gone and then fell asleep with my headphones on.
I fell asleep with headphones on.
I dreamt about poetry and woke up on the floor...

You were our patron saint yet still they blame us for only praying to be famous.
Is Nothing worth dying for?

I don't even know whether to post this:

1. It was not quite at the seaside, but very close
2. They never actually used the prayer book for corporal punishment, but I sometimes made involuntary contact with paddles from those paddle ball things they'd confiscated
3. They took away my headphones, but an old transistor radio earjack fooled them.

If you have a weak stomach, skip this post.

Yesterday I was reading the "Alone" thread opened by Zippy in the General Discussion part of the forum. I didn't want to disrespect the thread or the people on it, but every time I think of getting old and dying alone (which in itself doesn't bother me), I involuntarily remember this song.

Marie Prevost was a silent movie star, popular throughout the 1920's. With the advent of talkies her work dried up, and she got depressed, packed on the pounds and hit the bottle. She was found dead from alcoholism and malnutrition in her Hollywood apartment in January 1937, age 38. They figure she was like that for about two weeks, and the really awful part is that her pet dachshund had chewed her up a little. Nobody's sure whether he was trying to rouse her, or whether he was just hungry.

Nick Lowe wrote a song about it, Marie Prevost, and I'm listening to it on my birthday. And when I'm old, I'll make sure the dogs and cats have plenty of food...

"Man-Slag". Written and performed by my thirteen year old daughter. I think she has rather confused feelings for this boy, lol! Here's the lyric:

Man-Slag

"You're such a man-slag and a two-timing tart.
I'm writing about you and you're wasting my arm.
My friend says she loves you and I say that you're hot,
But you know you're not really breaking my heart.

You got a bj off the class slut;
She was a wannabe Vicky Pollard.
Every time you joke at me and turn me down,
I remember the time you wore my bra

Every day you flirt with me. You feel my arse -
I think it's kinda sweet.
Everyone else says that you're a pervert,
But I think you're kinda neat

Me and Abbie think that your favourite subject
Is definitely your penis.
We both think you're really obsessed
By your small and shrivelled penis."

And to think, at that age I was gazing at my Bay City Rollers posters and sighing romantically....

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht

Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
and that you would never leave

But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you.....

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all of the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you.....

Who do you reckon this song is about??? Everyone says its someone but I think its someone else. maybe we could have a new thread?

There is a whole page on her website about this :D

http://www.carlysimon.com/vain/vain.html

Personally, I liked this explanation best:

"I've never, ever told who You're So Vain is about. But I will tell you since you're so very pretty in that pink sweater....it's about the young Oprah Winfrey."
:p

about You're So Vain, Carly once said "It's about Mick Jagger pouring catsup on Warren Beaty's hamburger."

If you're real old you might remember when Carly's "Anticipation" was the theme song for Heinz 57. nOW dOES iT mAKE sENSE?
