You might think it's a weird song to post here, but there's a story to go along with it and where better to post this stuff than morrissey-solo? In another life, I did some volunteer work with these two old teddy boys. Real stand-up guys. They were from Memphis, but had spent the last 30 years or so working on oil rigs before retiring to Florida. I assumed they were brothers because they were nearly identical: the same deep copper suntans, rough hands, and the sort of faces you get from years of hard work out in the elements. One night we were at an awful, stuffy civic event. You could see they'd made an effort with their freshly greased quiffs, bolo ties, and perfect sideburns. About halfway through this dirge, one got up and had a few words with the deejay, and about ten minutes later this song http://download.yousendit.com/D680CCD12E5E0625 rolled out of the speakers. Then, without even looking at one another, they clasped hands. You would never have known it unless you were sitting right next to them, as I was. The little one leaned over to me with a light in his eyes I'd never seen and said, "It's our anniversary and this is our song." When we said goodbye that night I gave them both a big hug, hoping that some of that magic might rub off. Then I walked home through the park humming this song. The speaker speaks, but the truth still leaks, Where even Richard Nixon has got soul. Even Richard Nixon has got it, Soul. The podium rocks in the crowded waves. The speaker talks of the beautiful saves That went down long before he played this role For the hotel queens and the magazines, Test tube genes and slot machines Where even Richard Nixon got soul. Even Richard Nixon has got it, Soul. Hospitals have made him cry, But there's always a freeway in his eye, Though his beach just got too crowded for his stroll. Roads stretch out like healthy veins, And wild gift horses strain the reins, Where even Richard Nixon has got soul. Even Richard Nixon has got Soul. I am a lonely visitor. Yesterday I was reading the "Alone" thread opened by Zippy in the General Discussion part of the forum. I didn't want to disrespect the thread or the people on it, but every time I think of getting old and dying alone (which in itself doesn't bother me), I involuntarily remember this song. Marie Prevost was a silent movie star, popular throughout the 1920's. With the advent of talkies her work dried up, and she got depressed, packed on the pounds and hit the bottle. She was found dead from alcoholism and malnutrition in her Hollywood apartment in January 1937, age 38. They figure she was like that for about two weeks, and the really awful part is that her pet dachshund had chewed her up a little. Nobody's sure whether he was trying to rouse her, or whether he was just hungry. Nick Lowe wrote a song about it, Marie Prevost, and I'm listening to it on my birthday. And when I'm old, I'll make sure the dogs and cats have plenty of food... http://www.harrys-stuff.com/cinema/cinema-images/marie-prevost.jpg http://download.yousendit.com/50FE0CED0DC51DE5 Now I'm going to the park with the Pisan Cantos to cheer the fk up! wolve October 14, 2006, 04:32 PM Happy Birthday!
