Aye they would have. Morrissey's best solo stuff is just as good as the best smiths stuff. All done, of course, without wee marrsy.

people are stupid. without Marr's superb musicianship they wouldn't have made as much of an impact, despite morrissey's genious. Morrissey's solo stuff is atmittedly superb though.

Plus Marr is such a lovely bloke I feel inclined to stick up for him

Some people are stupid but I'm not one of them. Got that?
I change my mind on a daily basis as to whether his best solo stuff is
better than the best smiths stuff. I have obviously therefore arrived at
the conclusion that it's neck-and-neck.
Morrissey would have come to the attention of people like us without wee
marrsy, with some decent musicians who could knock a tune together. Just
like his solo stuff.
Meanwhile, the guitar genius hasn't done a single thing of note in fifteen
years. FIFTEEN YEARS!! How long does he want??
But aye, you're right - he is a lovely bloke.

What is wrong with you people? Marr is a god damn genius, he was the very backbone of everything The Smiths did. He doesn't have to do anything new, he'll forever be a hero to those who know that Morrissey would have gone nowhere if it weren't for Marr.

Morrissey needed Marr's genius to propel him. Notice that The Smiths only ever went wrong in making a covers...every other song The Smiths produced is pure genius. Morrissey has had how many mediocre attempts at good tunage? Think about it folks: back then if Morrissey had hooked up with some pissant group like he has since The Smiths, he would never have gone anywhere. The Smiths made Morrissey what he is, and Marr made The Smiths.

I know you all like to believe that Morrissey would have made it somehow or another without Marr, but that just isn't true. Show proper respect to the man who made the man you love.

It IS true. Morrissey WOULD have made it somehow or another without wee marrsy.
Moz was a permanent fixture on the Manchester music scene. He was also keen on ads placed in papers like the NME.

As an example, at a younger age, he had been in touch with the mob known as the London SS, who included guys like Joe Strummer, and who went on to spawn bands like Generation X and The Clash. It was only his location in Manchester that prevented closer contact and development.

Morrissey was the backbone. Some of his post-Smiths stuff is breathtakingly brilliant ( I don't use the term lightly). If I could have one album, and one album only from his Smiths or solo career to date, it would be the Marr-free Vauxhall & I.

It was a blessing that he met Marr and we now have the legacy of the greatest band of all time. I'm not denying that. But he would have made it. Something had to give.

Good point. His ability to be a part of things in his hometown more than prove how famous he could have been worldwide had he never met Marr. Gimme a break, what a poor excuse for logic!

Being in contact with people does not ensure jack. Even being a part of what they do cannot ensure even half an ounce of success. You are going to have to do better than that to prove Morrissey would have been what he is today without Marr.

> Morrissey was the backbone.

Yeah, because Morrissey is a brilliant musician who writes fantastic music using all of those instruments he plays so well.

> Some of his post-Smiths stuff is

Morrissey would not have made it to the point at which he did Vauxhall & I if it weren't for the previous success of The Smiths. The Smiths and the magic of Marr have been a permanent influence on Morrissey in everything that he has done post-Smiths, whether it has been completely obvious or not.

> It was a blessing that he met Marr and we now have the legacy of the

Yes, the greatest band of all time. Greatest BAND of all time. The rest of the boys from Smiths could have made it without Morrissey, Morrissey WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT WITHOUT THE SMITHS.

> I'm not denying that. But he would have made
> it. Something had to give.

Would have made it, yeah...to a dank basement with a "Hang yourself now, your dreams are dead" noose hanging from the stairway.
