View Full Version : Hand In Glove-A Mistake ?
Hibernianbilly November 6, 2002, 01:32 PM I felt quite sad when Moz played HIG. The place came alive, it was a beautiful moment. BUT, it also had the downside of putting the previous hour in the shade. The girl I was with said the same thing.I have always been a big solo fan and never bought into the idea that the solo stuff was less accomplished. But, last night......I dunno folks.......I dunno.

Well 'Irish Blood English heart' for me has the makings of a classic. But like you Hibsman.. I would take Smiths over Morrissey solo. But last night at Brixton it worked well as a mix.. I got quite emotional during HIG.. like I have said, 16 years on from Brixton '86 and hearing it again about the very same place I stood all those years ago. Just 10 yards in front of the mixing desk... was emotional. As, it must be said, was the performance of Meat is murder.. in the same kind of context.

Tingle November 6, 2002, 02:03 PM One has to marvel at the brilliance of 'Hand In Glove' as a first single. Who would credit it that someone could write such a dazzling first song? It's great whether it's a first or 21st single. I beg to differ from your opinion though. I don't think it put the previous hour in the shade. It's good but not that good. HIG is loved by lovers in particular I guess. They all think it's 'their' song because of the lyrics. It's interesting that I don't think Morrissey has penned such an overtly romantic song since (bar, perhaps 'the line 'to die my your side is such a heavenly way to die'). Since there are dozens of excellent Morrissey and Smiths songs I find it quite impossible to identify the 'best of'. I get very excited about the 'new' songs (he didn't introdcue them as new did he?). It's like trying to decide which chocolate eclair is better than any other.

You misunderstand, I dont even really like HIG. I clearly point out the REACTION to the song by the crowd. The echo of HIG drowned out the solo stuff-Hope that is clearer.

Some people think I am saying HIG is a great song, I dont like it that much. I think you know what i am saying. The HIG seemed to summon a time gone by and remind us all what was lost.

But... I love BOTH of those songs (although my violinist friend thinks "Vicar in a Tutu" has a "detestable" drum part).
