View Full Version : Princess Diana
ellroy October 25, 2002, 04:37 PM Many years (around 1985) ago I remember Selina Scott on breakfast TV talking about Princess Diana's music taste and stating that her two fave bands were Duran Duran and the Smiths. I was a bit surprised and remember Morrissey responding in one of the tabloids a few days/weeks later saying that she was ugly etc.
I don't blame her for going of the Smiths after that but in the recent case against Paul Burrell they detailed the CDs he alledgely stole from her and they were Chris De Burgh, Dire Straits and David Hasselhoff!!
My point is I know everyone's taste in music may change over time but, Jesus, I don't understand this at all.
And I totally believe she loved the Smiths at one point because I remember a lot of sloanly girls liking them at that time.

Of course as Luke Haines said the only tragedy about the Paris crash was that the two boys weren't in the back
B.C. October 25, 2002, 08:35 PM Are you sure about Princess Diana liking The Smiths? I never read that. I remember she liked Duran Duran and other fluffy-type pop music (no offense to DD) like Wham and Chris DeBurgh.

totally agree!
Also, Sloanes being into the Smiths seems as likely as Moz being a member of the Countryside Alliance. The Smiths were as much a part of the 1980s working class resistance as the Miners Strike. I remember my parents made us sit in the garden rather than watch the bullshit propaganda royal wedding (Charles and Diana) on TV. If Diana was unaware of her part in the reactionary right wing of the 1980s then she was more stupid than I thought. She tried to make up for it by being photographed with black amputees and aids victims but I never bought it. Thank god for the French! Decent wine and they always knew how to treat the aristocracy. Guillotine or car crash = fuck them up big style.
sdavenport October 26, 2002, 06:42 PM Had you been born into her position, you'd have turned out no differently, so your hatred for a relatively decent woman (as Royals go) is pretty pathetic. It's no wonder you'd place value on the opinions of Luke Haines.

sdavenport October 26, 2002, 06:45 PM I forgive Morrissey being a jerk, because at least he was (and yes, I'm sticking with the past tense here) a genius. You, on the other hand...
More evidence that Morrissey fans are primarily morons, a position I've maintained for many years now...

The Queen is Dead October 26, 2002, 07:57 PM I don't really care about Luke Haines, but I think anyone who wastes sympathy or tears on the royal family or the aristocracy should find something better to do. Also, I am no moron but an educated, politically aware working class person with a brain and an opinion. Why are you even on this site? If you are an apologist for the right wing upper class go somewhere else. I can't believe a fan of the Smiths or Morrissey could have any sympathy for an upper class airhead who lived a life of luxury, married a prince at the height of thatcherism and reinforced the odious class system of this country at the same time as the Miners' Strike, riots (e.g. Toxteth and Brixton) and civil rights abuses in Northern Ireland were going on. The tories and the upper class have tried to crush the working class and new Labour has continued the job. However, some of us won't have our heads turned by the propaganda churned out by the media, which Diana was a willing part of.
One of the reasons I loved Morrissey and the Smiths was that he/they were part of the resistance to the right wing/ tories/ monarchy in the 80s. As a working class person growing up in the 80s it was an inspiration to see an articulate, vocal and gifted working class man such as Morrissey being (as he might put it) a disruptive element in the culture.
There are so many other things to get angry about in this world, a rich dead upper class airhead is pretty low down on the list.
ellroy October 29, 2002, 12:45 PM For a very short period she was I am very sure - in fact I think his reaction to Diana being reported as a fan was the first time I think that Morrissey made any anti-monarchist remarks (in the tabloid press at least).

ellroy October 29, 2002, 12:52 PM Sloanes and thier type were very into the Smiths. Much more so than the working classes!
I am from a working class background and I knew nobody else who liked the Smiths! Yet in the somewhat posher circles I move in now everyone admits to liking the Smiths when they were my age. Not very palatable but very true.
As is the fact that the working classes are by and large much more ignorant than the middle classes.
