View Full Version : Six Degrees of Morrissey
Duncan The Shammy October 16, 2002, 01:31 AM You have probably heard of the idea of six degrees of separation, whereby everyone is the world is linked to everybody else by a chain of no more than six people. That is, you may not have met a particular person, but you have met someone who has met someone who has met someone (etc) who has met that person. (You may also know it as 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon', where you try to link actors to Kevin Bacon by a similar chain of shared co-stars.)
It struck me that this would be a fun game to play using Morrissey as your starting point, considering his many collaborators over the years (not to mention the endless side projects of Mr. Marr, first link in many chains.)
You can connect Moz to some very unlikely people very quickly.
Bing Crosby? Just a couple of links from Moz and Bowie's live duet, to Bowie crooning 'Little Drummer Boy' with Bing.
"Reggae is vile"? Maybe so Moz, but Chrissie Hynde's backing vocals on 'My Love Lfe', and her guest appearance on UB40's 'I Got You Babe'bring reggae right to your door!
Arch-nemesis Robert Smith? Well, he served time as a member of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Moz duetted with Siouxsie on Interlude.
And they were all just a couple of steps. I'm sure that with up to six people allowed, you can link Moz with almost anyone of note in the music biz.
A few ground rules. What constitutes a direct link? A linked person must have contributed to a record with the linked person, or played 'live' with them. (On the same song. Sharing a bill, or being a support band does not count as a link.)Producers may be used as a link, but please use as a last resort, as the Lillywhite's and Streets of this world have worked with so many artists as to render the game no challenge. Covering someone's song or having one covered does not count as a link. Friendships do not count as links unless they have spilled over into work.
So, your first assignment.
Link Moz to Elvis.

Stoney Hando October 16, 2002, 01:38 AM Yuck! Who the hell designed those ugly ugly shirts and stuff. Why are you just selling stuff online, is this your only job? You're insane, go back to pre-school!
PS: Can you link my foot to your ass
Rowdy Yeats October 16, 2002, 01:50 AM I'm sorry but I have to play:
Moz was produced by Langer and winstanley
who produced Elvis costello (Moz also played with Steve Nieve on Kill uncle)
On 'King of America' Elvis played with the other Elvis' old sidemen (such as James Burton)

For a minute there I thought you were linking to the wrong Elvis! Good work!
I think you should get to nominate the next person to link to.

Thanks, It's difficult with Lillywhite producing so many.
Off the top of my head- I'll go with the Beatles. I wouldn't think it would be too hard, but I'd have to think about it.
OK: Moz to beatles
imacolata October 16, 2002, 02:04 AM > Link Moz to Elvis.
Hm. Well, Frank Sinatra had Elvis on his tv show to sing "witchcraft/love me tender"...so then you go Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby who did a christmas album together...bing crosby to David Bowie and bammo..Bowie and Moz live duet.
1. Elvis to Frank S.
2. Frank S. to Bing Crosby
3. Bing to Bowie
4. Bowie to Moz.
I'm sure there's a way to do it through Tom Jones, but I can't think of one right now.

I apologise that my stuff offends your sense of aesthetics so much. Of course, you are under no obligation to buy any of it. If you would prefer an 'official' shirt that just says 'Morrissey' in some Olde English style lettering, I'm not stopping you. Thankfully, it's not my only job. More of an experiment really, and hardly one that is leaving me rolling in cash.
I didn't think that adding a discreet link to the end of my messages was exactly an obtrusive 'hard sell'. In fact, I'm sure many people ignore it, so thanks for drawing attention to it. Maybe a few more people will click through now to satisfy their curiosity as just how 'ugly ugly' these things are. Who knows, they might even buy something so they can show all their friends the sheer unbelievable ugliness of it all!
In fact, to lessen the ugliness in the world, why don't you all vote for the ugliest product, and I will remove it,leaving anyone who had the bad taste to buy it with an ugliness collector's item.

The Smiths debut album featured Paul Carrack on keyboards
Paul Carrack was in Squeeze
As was Jools Holland whose new album features a song recorded with George Harrison
George Harrison...as if we didn't know...was in the Beatles.
How about Morrissey to Madonna? (I have no idea...)
Rowdy Yeats October 16, 2002, 02:39 AM and although I don't slit throats, I obviously have too much time on my hands.
OK, I cheated when I got stumped but here goes.
Moz played with Billy Duffy in the Nosebleeds
Billy Duffy played in the Cult with Matt Sorum
Matt played in GnR with Slash
Slash wrote and played on 'Always on the Run' by Lenny Kravitz
Lenny produced and sang 'Justify my Love' by Madonna.
I knew Lenny was the key, but I had to look up and see that he played with slash.
Boy, I don't know, so many choices, how about the Crashing Bore, Elton John?
Duncan The Shammy October 16, 2002, 03:18 AM > Boy, I don't know, so many choices, how about the Crashing Bore, Elton
> John?
Elton duet with George Michael (Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me)
George duet w. Aretha Franklin (I Knew You Were Waiting)
Aretha and Eurythmics (Sisters are Doing It For Themselves)
Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics) formed Vegas with Terry Hall
One of the musicians on Terry Hall's solo album 'Home' is Craig Gannon
Craig Gannon was briefly in The Smiths with....Morrissey
Duncan The Shammy October 16, 2002, 03:28 AM
Rowdy Yeats October 16, 2002, 03:57 AM Morrissey was in the Smiths with Johnny Marr
Marr was Electronic with Bernie Sumner
Sumner (w/New Order) had Billy Corgan sing vocals on one song for Get Ready
Corgan co-wrote Celebrity Skin with Courtney Love and Hole
Courtney Love was married to Kurdt Cobain
Well, I'm calling it a night, but if yr bored how about Morrissey to Jim Morrison?
Later

I personally find those products clever and much more attractive than the stuff they sell at the concert. No how about a free "Unruly girl" shirt for the testimonial?

I would love to give you a free shirt, but unfortunately it's not in my power.I supply the ideas and the artwork, and Cafepress supply the shirts and printing. They have a set base price which I cannot go below, and anything I add on is my profit. I have lowered the 'Unruly Girl' shirt to its base price of $16.99 for you if you're interested (which means i make zilch). Sorry, best I can do.
Glad you like them anyway.

I thought you worked at night? Anyway here's Morrison to Mozzer
Moz was in the Smiths with Johnny Marr
Marr worked with Ian Mculloch of Echo and the Bunnymen on his solo material (the only thing released was their co-written World Cup song 'On Top of the World)
Echo & the Bunnymen released a cover of People Are Strange produced by Ray Manzarek
Manzarek was in The Doors with...Jim Morrison
How about Morrissey to Cliff Richard?
theresa light October 16, 2002, 09:18 AM You lot are going round the houses!
Moz to Elvis was only ever one step -
1) The Smiths covered His Latest Flame. End of story.
Moz to Kurt was also only one step -
1) Kurt sang Teen Spirit on TOTP in England in the style of Moz. End of story.
It's all very interesting what you're saying but you're dancing round the houses when you could just be walking through the front door. Next you'll be trying to connect Moz with Johnny Marr in 6 steps...

well, according to Duncan the Shammy's "game rules": What constitutes a direct link? A linked person must have contributed to a record with the linked person, or played 'live' with them. wring out the shammy October 16, 2002, 04:35 PM
Rowdy Yeats October 16, 2002, 05:41 PM No, Manzarek produced the song, and thus worked with echo.
