View Full Version : Thoguhts on Moz
Shazza September 20, 2002, 09:18 PM There is no doubt that the Smiths were fantastic, their music is timeless and I never tire of listening to it. Also, a lot of Morrissey's stuff is equally good. However, I think he peaked with "Vauxall and I" and since then his music has been ...let's just say, on the shite side. There is the odd song on Southpaw grammar I like and I think one song on Maladjusted is ok.
Don't you think that this new record......if it is released...is going to be pretty poor?
Hibernianbilly September 20, 2002, 09:26 PM Disagree. The gig on the 17th was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Moz solo is as strong as the Smiths, take the blinkers off and listen to 'Your Arsenal' et al. 'First of the gang to die' is going to be another huge song like 'everyday is like sunday'. More anthemic Moz on the way. The Smiths are great but they are past, Moz is now and his voice is superb these days. Alain and Boz are top musicians, very talented, Marr isn't the only songwriter in the world you know.

Yes I know......I'm not a total sad git who only listens to the smiths!
And I agree "Your arsenal" is great....first of the gang to die was ok....but is it going to be the only good song on a record that like his last two wasn't that good.
Also.....didn't Alain and Boz help write the last two albums which were pretty dire?
PunchdrunkGB September 20, 2002, 10:56 PM I think "Vauxall" was a gem,"Maladjusted" I though was his worst offering to date and to be honest I though his next outing if he didnt change his band would be WORST!!!I really though he had to start a fresh.
But I rate the new songs,The only one I dont like is Mexico,The rest I reckon are great lets face it he is not going to attract the following he did in 1988-1991 but "Irish Blood" is a very good song and "Last in the gang to die" is a very strong song as well.
I'm one of those people who cant wait for another Morrissey record BUT believe what ever happens HAPPENS and he has gave us enough crackers to keep his going,WHEN I heard the chorus of "Irish Bllod" It sent a shiver down my spine and I though this is a classic,The song never really got there, but It confirmed one thing if its not this year, next year or the next 5 years Morrissey will leave us with at least one amazing GEM of an album where he will unleash some of the best lyrics and songs to date.
He is a living legend and its great to see him on the road strutting his stuff

The second night was the best. But the question was will the next album be better?.. than the previous two (disappointing) releases.
I am optimistic. All the new stuff seems to be a return to some sort of form.. but sadly (apart from English Heart, Irish Blood) still not as good as his peak work (as previously stated and to which I agree).. Vauxhall and I..
As for live, Alain is the most talented I would say. Watching him carefully from that side of the satge on Wednesday and the fills and embellishments he was doing. Boz is a good journeyman guitarist after watching from that side of the satge on the Tuesday! I think Gary Day is so cool too.. am I Gary's only fan!
And Morrisseys voice is still incredibly strong. a rare talent.

Hibernianbilly September 21, 2002, 03:31 PM I bet you never told Moz that when you were hobnobbing with him backstage !
I don't think you can say Alain is most talented. All you are seeing at any gig is the musicians playing the parts for that particular show, it doesn't give any indication of what they are capable of. Boz can play classical guitar I believe and clarinet etc. I am a rockabilly and have been for 20 years, so I know of Gary from various bands and think he's cool. I don't like the new drummer though, he came across as a bit of a wanker.

Ha ha.. I said very little and certainly wouldn't have criticised the music. In a better situation I maybe would have slagged off the bouncers for sure. Jumped up b8stards given a bit of power and oh man, look at those cave men go. Beating up the wrong guy.. (bit of Bowie there).. I tell you if they'd come in teh audience they'd have been sorted out for sure.

Yeah good point. I can't say for sure ehose best fo course. Just an opinion. But I'd say the White compositions were genreally better than the Boz ones.. (Jack the ripper and Now My heart is full excepted!)
I tend to agree about 'deano'.. the drumming on the outro of Speedway was limp.. it should be up there in the world of Bonham for the power on that song.
So. rockabilly boy. Hope thats ok as a response. Wish I'd quiffed for the night. the crowd was generally quiffs or shaved headed! And not much in between except me ! haha
