View Full Version : Morrissey Needs a New Image!!!!
Sparacus August 21, 2002, 10:15 AM If I was appointed as Morrissey's manager, I guarantee you that I could turn around his flagging career. For one thing - its clear that the old boy needs an image makeover. Looking like an East -End 'bloke', crossed with an old 50s rocker with a quiff is hardly 2002. How many teenagers aspire to that?
My suggestion would firstly be an appearance change. Moz should be put on a diet to shed the 'middle-aged spread'. His hair should be cut short & dyed blonde and he should be dressed in casual jeans, with a brown suede jacket and dark shades.
A major new album project would then be announced. Having dropped his high asking price, I would get Moz signed to a cutting edge label. None of the old band would be used - but cutting edge musicians instead. The album would be a post-modern experiment , where Morrissey would sing his lyrics over a continuous piece of music - marrying techno, garage & drum n bass rhythms to classical orchestration. Fatboy Slim would be brought in as producer and the album would feature guest vocals from Eminem, Moby and the Pet Shop Boys.
For the tour, Morrissey would perform behind a screen and not be seen by the audience - thus focusing their minds on the art not the artist. Onto the screen would be projected a collage of images of Moz's own choosing.
Punchdrunk1975 August 21, 2002, 10:43 AM Your taste in the new direction of morrissey is terrible.....What next Morrissey-Kylie hard house Sasha remix????That would be better than Drum and Base Ever heard This Charming man *new york Mix*??????
What about a new band with John Squire on guitar some classic indie guitar tunes and some classic tales of unrequired love, rejection, love, hate etc etc etc etc etc
Morrissey and Drum and BASE what the hell are you on???????????????

Nah, not John Squire, I have a better idea, the band James is looking for a new singer now that Boothy's gone. Would be a classic combination IMO! And Eno always produces their stuff so that would probably give the whole thing a nice edge.

I think Morrissey doing a duet with Kylie or Robbie Williams would be great for his image acually.

Who the fuck cares about his image, the important part is the MUSIC. He has to do what inspires him creatively, it's not about publicity stunts with Moz and that's one of the things that's so special about him, especially with the state of the music business in general these days. We're talking art here, not marketing.
Salford Lads Club August 21, 2002, 11:46 AM WHAT a pile of SHIT you are talking...Go back Eminem (sic?) or Kylie or Michael Jackson or whatever talentless pop stars camp you cam from. STOP THIS SHIT...YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE SMITHS AND OR MORRISSEY IS ALL ABOUT.

Rowdy Yeats August 21, 2002, 01:48 PM I think Sparacus has a point. OK, a duet with Robbie!or Kylie! or Eminem is saying a bit much.
But I would be okay with something like Santana's album or Paul Weller. Moz can duet with some his acolytes. What's wrong with having members of Suede, Pulp, Radiohead, Divine Comedy, etc. guest and co-write.
I have respect for Mr. Lillywhite- he has produced some of my fave albums- U2 come to mind, but why not go for a Moby or Bowie or John Cale, or hell, Todd Rundgren.
I also think that the artwork needs to be great- it hasn't been up to par with the classic Smiths covers. And I also agree that it would be better to wait and put out a superior product than release a shoddy one.
And to finish off, I agree that 'Earthling' is a pretty damn good album. It hasn't aged as well, Bowie does Reznor is so early-90s. But it is an album that I can put on and listen to from start to finish.
And hell, I have heard 'Slow Burn' on the radio a few times, so let's not discount the power of a strong leadoff single.
Rowdy Yeats August 21, 2002, 01:53 PM How about showing up for yr. concerts, too? If Moz continues to reschedule concerts and cancel concerts and leave halfway through concerts, he is going to alienate people. Plain and simple. If you don't like performing live, then don't schedule concerts, it worked for Andy Partridge. That's probably my biggest criticism of Moz.

Better yet, see my reply to Punchy above.

Hey, there you go. Granted, I don't want to see moz in a group, neccesarily. and I doubt he does too (i.e. the Undertones). But why not, the Billy Bragg/Wilco thing worked fine. So why the hell not?
I still like Boz quite a bit, and Moz can still keep the band, but get some new blood in there.
And thanks for mentioning Eno. that would be great.
Rowdy Yeats August 21, 2002, 02:59 PM One more comment and I'll stop:
How about a well-done cover song for a single. That might help him up the charts a bit. It's worked for people like Marc Almond
I realize it's about art, but chart success and high visibility would be nice, too.

Okay, Okay. I get it because you can't possibly be this stupid. Well you could, but faith in humanity compells me to give you the benefit of the doubt. You are being ironic just to piss of all his fans, hence your name "Spar-a-cus". you are so very clever, now can we all stop this innane topic?

I AM talking art. I am saying that great art has to change and to innovate. Otherwise it will fail the critical test of time.

You are clearly incapable of engaging in adult conversation without swearing. u are also a fool. I understand exactly what the Smiths were about.

Yes but a duet with Kylie or Robbie is purely about generating publicity, those aren't people who would bring anything creative or artistic. They aren't musicians, they have talent but only as performers or entertainers. Neither of them have any musical talent, so the only thing they have to recommend them for a collaboration would be their names, their fame. I think if Morrissey chooses to work with new people, whether musicians, producers, or even another singer, it will be for the right reasons, because they are creative and he respects them, and I can't see it being people like those you've mentioned. Innovation is only a good thing if it is inspired as well.
And as far as standing the test of time, I'm sure you don't really think that Kylie or Robbie will. I'm not saying I don't like them, but I'm sure that Kylie will one day be viewed as Olivia Newton John is now. People will not be listening to their albums in 10 or 20 years.

I think this is a reincarnation of a previous Moz basher.
Grimace August 22, 2002, 05:53 AM If Morrissey had a new make-over, like the one you suggested (dyed blonde hair, etc...) what would make him different from any other BackStreet, N*Sync, idiot? I thought the whole point of this fan site is for die hard fans (like some of the scary posts i've seen, LOL). If he changed like that, drum beats etc... He wouldn't be the cool cat that he is. Personally, I was drawn to how different he is (and was) and not really giving a shit. I really love Morrissey's music, and if he changed it, I don't think I'd like him as much anymore. He'd be a pathetic sell out doing Pepsi comercials like all the other freaks making "music" out there. Just my opinion.
