View Full Version : One Hit Wonders From the Eighties, who were they
Librarian on Fire July 10, 2002, 01:14 AM This has been bugging me for ages now. In the early 80's their was a song which made it to number one in New Zealand which was about "didn't we have a lovely day the day we went to Bagnor". From what I remember of it, it was a silly novelty song. The band (I think) came from England. The video had some redhead girl on a beach. I've looked on 80's compilation cds, to no avail.
Can anyone remember this song and if so name the artist. Otherwise my mind is playing tricks on me in my old age.
I KNow This One July 10, 2002, 03:57 AM Day Trip to Bangor (Didn't We Have a Lovely Time)
by FIDDLER'S DRAM
Entered UK charts on 15th Dec 1979, highest chart position 3
Chorus:
Didn't we have a lovely time
The day we went to Bangor
A beautiful day, we had lunch on the way
And all for under a pound, you know
That on the way back I cuddled with Jack
And we opened a bottle of cider
Singing a few of our favourite songs
As the wheels went around
Do you recall the thrill of it all
As we walked along the seafront
Then on the sand we heard a brass band
That made a tiddly tum ta ra ra
Elsie and me had one cup of tea
Then we took a paddling boat out
Thrashing away as we sailed round the bay
As the wheels went around
Wasn't it nice eating chocolate ice
As we strolled around the fun fair
Then we ate eels on the big ferris wheel
As we sailed above the ground but then
We had to be quick 'cause Elsie fell sick
And we had to find somewhere to take her
I said to her lad, what made her feel bad
Was the wheel going around
Can't you still hear the noise on the pier
As we took a breath of sea air
Having a go at every side show
We passed along the way, we had
Our fortunes told, when it turned a bit cold
And a go on the tombola
It was such a surprise 'cause I won a prize
When the wheel went around
Elsie and me, we finished our tea
And we said good bye to the seaside
Jumped on the bus, Flo said to us
Oh isn't it a shame to go
Wouldn't it be grand to have cash on demand
And to live like this for always
Oh it makes me feel ill when I think of the mill
And the wheels going around
Ted Maul July 10, 2002, 05:23 AM Obviously a BIG influence on Morrissey. Surely the main inspiration for 'Everyday is Like Sunday', with it's talk of seaside, sand and tea. It also contains the phrase 'Then on the sand', which he lifted for 'Pretty Girls Make Graves' the 'quick/sick' rhyme which showed up in 'Our Frank', the funfair setting of 'Rusholme Ruffians', and the motif of being 'ill'.

Grim O'Grady July 10, 2002, 06:39 AM LoF,
You make me giddy, what are you on mate? Trouble is I'm now playing the song (only in my head). Next you'll be wanting Terry Wogan's version of the Floral Dance, arrrrggghh I can't believe I've just written that! Now if you want class of the 1 hitters, you need the Worzulls (can't confirm the spelling) the Combine Harvester song circa mid '70's which was a skit on Melanies, Brand New Key song from around that period.

The Magic Fairy July 10, 2002, 07:31 PM Oh God! I HATED that song! I was at primary school at the time; the evil Scottish witch teacher who used to play piano during assembly used to get the sheet music for every toe-curdlingly horrible novelty hit song from the period, and make us sing it! Wail!! The flashbacks!! "Hallelujah" by Milk & Honey... "One Day At A Time" by Lena Martell.... Sob! She was evil. EVIL I tell yer! Burn the witch! BURN HER!!

Librarian on Fire July 11, 2002, 12:45 AM Thanks all for your comments and most importantly, providing me with the answer I sought. Yeh, it was a really crap song. Now I have to find it to listen to again. I need it to *sob* get on with my life. All novelty songs are shite tho aren't they?
sissy July 11, 2002, 03:05 AM wow, you people are making even me feel young and I'm 30!!!...
