I've received this mailout from the people who run Club Beer in London. The event takes place this Thursday (23 May). Read on...

TMF

Yes, a mere 43 years after his birth, the bloke with the glasses out of The Smiths at last gets the sort of tribute that only real stars can ever expect to enjoy.

That's right - it's Club Beer Presents "Happy Birthday Morrissey!": An
Alcohol-Fuelled Tribute To The King Of Bedsit Angst.

The day: Thursday, later on this week.
The date: In case that's not clear, we mean May 23 2002.
The place: The Buffalo Bars, Islington.
The transportation options: best bet is to get the tube to Highbury & Islington, and head for the second door on your right as you leave the station. Unless you live nearby, in which case, walk there. Do I have to do everything for you? Jeepers.
The time: from 9pm until 2am
The price: A princely THREE of your English pounds.

Basically, it'll be a normal Club Beer, featuring our almost famous blend of Music That Only Sounds Good When You're Drunk, with three Morrissey or Smiths records involved at some point in the evening. There's a FREE MORRISSEY RAFFLE involved, details of which, thought up entirely by Ian, are included below.

In what appears to be a case of arse imitating life, we've gone all "England squad injury" prone. There will be a guest DJ spot from GILLIAN BUT NOT POLLY, SADLY, AS SHE IS OTHERWISE ENGAGED. But Gillian is by now a dab hand at such things and will, I'm sure, be ready to rock, shock and banish thoughts of defeat before the last 16 with a mixonological set of world class international brilliance.

So, to recap. It's Club Beer, basically, as it so often has been, only with a spurious raffle. It's on Thursday, it's cheap to get in, one of the bottled beers will be only £1.50 til midnight, and, should you be in the correct mood, it'll probably be something of a laugh. Hopefully this is sufficient.

Oh, by the way, we've now added ANT AND DEC to the dazzling array of stars in our online video Big-Up Boutique. Don't believe us? Try the evidence of your own eyes at http://www.clubbeer.co.uk

I thank you for your attention, and pass you over to Ian.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MORRISSEY!

This Wednesday, the 22nd of May, Stephen Patrick Morrissey, former lead singer of The Smiths and Morrissey, will be 43 years old. Happy birthday to him, happy birthday to him, happy birthday dear fondly-remembered onetime British cultural icon and paragon of pasty-faced guitar music perfect for moping around your bedsit in your cardigan tooooo... happy birthday to him.

To mark this prestigious occasion, we have decided to throw caution to the wind and stage a MORRISSEY RAFFLE at this Thursday's Club Beer.

Here's how it will work:

(1) When you enter Club Beer you will be given a raffle ticket with a Smiths/Morrissey song title on it. That will be for free. You will be given one and one only.

(2) Three songs of a Smiths/Moz-related nature will be played during the evening. No more and no less. If we play the song that is written on your raffle ticket, rush to the DJ booth and present your ticket to either Ian or Angus to receive a prize. But be warned! Others may also have a ticket with this song title written on it. The first ticket to be handed in and verified by the official judges will win.

(3) You can improve your chances of winning by purchasing extra raffle tickets. These will be blank so you can write the song title of your choice on them. Like heroin, the first raffle ticket you were given was for free. And like heroin, each subsequent ticket will be more and more expensive, until you are forced to rob houses or go on the game to pay for them. The first cost is 10p, then 20p, then 50p, then £1, then £5, then £10, then £20. If you are mad enough to pay £20 for a raffle ticket then that is your own lookout. Don't come running to us when you don't win.

(4) Some raffle participants may wish to try the trick of requesting "their song", all innocent-like, from the DJs at some point in the evening. Those planning to attempt this are advised to come bearing either (a) an alcoholic beverage for Ian or (b) a surprise for Angus to stand any chance of succeeding. [***NB: A "shock" is not a "surprise". Cheers, AB***]

That's it. See you on Thursday!

PS: If you're really bored, you could check out the RANDOM MORRISSEY GENERATOR at the site of Ian's other club, How Does It Feel To Be Loved, at http://www.howdoesitfeel.co.uk/ Or you could make a cup of tea or something. That usually works for me.
