View Full Version : Visual Impact of The Smiths - The Guardian
Tingle February 23, 2002, 10:48 PM In today's (23.2.02) Guardian 'Weekend' magazine there's a feature (p38) titled "There is a light that never goes out" by Zoe Williams. It's based around Kenin Cummins' coming book 'The Smiths and Beyond' and excitingly an exhibition 29Mar to 18 April at 'Proud Central' London WC2.
I recognise most of the photos except the pic of Johnny Marr taken in 1996 where he's leaning on a jukebox evidently filled with Smiths 7"s.
I'll read it and tell you more or try and find a link at Guardian on-line.

Thanks so much for the link Tingle, it's a very good article and I'm so pleased it was written by a fan. One to print off I think.

Yeah, very good article, but I thought Morrissey DID have bad eyesight, although she says otherwise.

Jesus, you should rename that night 'Morrissey-Overplugged'.
A really good read. Was n't too sure about the bit say no-one liked Morrissey's solo stuff though.

Agreed. And when was 'National Front Disco' ever a single? - or is my memory fading? So much was made of 'Meat is Murder' but it never was his phrase was it? - he took it from the Animal Rights folks, who I'm sure are very pleased he did. This should have been acknowledged
I do't think the author made anything of the careful sleeve design etc and Morrissey's choice of colour - who else would have cassette boxes made in 'soft apricot' to contrast so nicely with the holly green for 'The Queen is Dead'? I love the little story (news page) about Morrissey going to his draw to carefully select a coloured pen with which to autograph a poster.
Vauxhall Driver February 25, 2002, 01:43 PM Paul McCartneys solo career has been decades longer than his Beatles career but his solo stuff cannot live up to anything he did in The Beatles, the same thing has happened to Morrissey. Is it any wonder popstars go mad!

Excellent link Tingle.. I'd heard on Sunday about this article and was waiting for my mate to bring in a copy for me today, (but he's off)!! But I am pleased to have read it.. It is as good as I heard it was.
Quality British journalism for a change. And I can't help but be so pleased and revel in its Britishness.. Oh the excitement of waiting for those Smiths releases as they came, I remember how excited I was to buy my vinyl version of Meat IS Murder and rush home and feel it, taste it, belong to it for a long while.. Hence my self.. the (Rushholme) Ruffian.
Thanks Tingle. I want to marry Zoe Williams!

I think his team is Spurs if my notes serve me right, so I think he might be a bit gutted after their Worthington Cup final defeat. And just to add insult to injury I have fond memories of Sheff Utd 6 Spurs 0.

Didn't Morrissey say once that going to ----- (the name of a English stationery shop) was the closet he comes to a sensual experience? I think it might be in "Morrissey In His Own Words", and as someone who get very fussy and particular over which pen to write with I applaud him.

I don't particularly like this article, as she goes down the road where Moz was accused of being racist, I think this requires a little more in depth discussion. Obviously she has got a word limit, which hinders exploring such things in more detail. And the remark that no one liked Morrissey's solo material is a bit of to say the least, he has produced plenty of gems to rival The Smiths stuff, just not with quite the same consistency in the latter years.
She makes some good points though, I like the bit about Union flag wavers Oasis and Geri being totally non-threatening, and seen as luvvy dubby patriotism.

Yeah, You're right Billy Budd.. Tottenham Hotspur is my team.. And yes, they lost on Sunday and yes, I was drunk in a pub at 7pm, but philosophiclly accepting that THFC had most of the chances compared to Blackburn and missed. Its as simple as that. No point ruing the day. Anyway, trying to be optimistic and ready to take the second sc*mmiest side in England on in the next round of the FACUP.. Chelsea. Thats the next cup final. Never met a nice Chelsea fan you know.
And I like Charlton as well.. THFC member and CAFC season ticket. It's bizarre I know.
truly February 27, 2002, 12:14 PM She also says National Front Disco was a single- I don;t this it was, was it?
I didn;t really rate the article- very little research...most of it could have been written by anyone. I'd like to have read more stuff about Kevin Cummin's pictures themselves.
Vauxhall Driver February 27, 2002, 01:11 PM Iremember when you said youd been to Charlton v West Ham, I thought you were a Hammer!
Our lass supports Charlton too (oh dear)

I forgot that bit when she mentioned The National Front Disco was a single, great track though, I think I will give her the benefit of the doubt and put it down to her working late at night. It still makes me laugh when I think of how some people saw it as an overtly racist song, this assumption is just criminal when you consider the importance of the issues it raises. I think its one of Moz' best upbeat solo songs as well.

I thought you had a piss next to Tim Lovejoy, mind you that doesn't make him a nice person though does it?
