View Full Version : New Order members form new band - without Peter Hook
The Seeker of Good Songs June 15, 2009, 08:38 PM Former New Order members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Phil Cunningham have formed a brand new band, without ex-bassist Peter Hook that is. The collective is called 'Bad Lieutenant' and also features Blur's Alex James on bass. The band has already completed the recordings of an album, set for release in October. The material is said to be more guitar based than New Order, not exactly surprising since the band features three guitarists.
New Order split last summer, with Hook falling out with his former band mates (http://www.side-line.com/news_comments.php?id=22985_0_2_0_C). Note that so far Bad Lieutenant has no website presence at al, just like New Order never had one.
Bad Lieutenant was put together in 2007 by New Order's Bernard Sumner (guitar and vocals) alongside Phil Cunningham (guitar) and Jake Evans (guitar and vocals). The band have spent over a year writing, recording and mixing the album near Manchester, drafting in additional musicians including Stephen Morris and Alex James. A single is expected to be released prior to the album.
Below is a video of the band at work bringing an acoustic version of "Sink or swim".

++++++ June 16, 2009, 03:50 AM Sounds promising. I have to admit I'm looking forward to Bad Lieutenant's album much more than Freebass' (if it ever comes out). I'm glad they ended up officially retiring the name New Order, though- it wouldn't have been the same without Hook.
Oh my god, it's Robby! June 16, 2009, 05:23 AM Bad Lieutenant was a good movie, but i have a feeling this band is gonna suck  sorry :o
Hidden By Rags June 16, 2009, 06:03 AM He never had a strong voice, but I can barely make out his trademark sound. The songs sound great on acoustic guitar alone though. Who needs Stephen Morris! Just joking.
Jukebox Jury June 16, 2009, 09:48 PM Barney looks like he's having a right shit in that picture though:laughing:

lmao
I'm really looking forward to this. All four acoustic tracks from that session (Love Will Tear Us Apart, Bizarre Love Triangle, Getting Away With It and Sink Or Swim) can be found here:

Hidden By Rags June 17, 2009, 05:10 PM 'Getting away with it', was somewhat disappointing. I was looking forward to the acoustic version, but it is nowhere near the original (and on that song hard to compete with the strings!). Bernard's voice just isn't the same, and he just wasn't meant to sing it, either. That middle solo part I agree is good though.
Fulham Road Lights June 17, 2009, 08:46 PM I'm looking forward to this album. Bad Lieutenant look to be the latest in a string of great Bernard Sumner bands.
vivabob June 17, 2009, 09:37 PM i cant wait , i thonk the last 2 new order albums were excellent so if this is on par it will begreat , hope they play live :thumb:
Biggoof009 June 19, 2009, 09:46 AM I've always read that Hook was a huge douche through the years, and was quite mean to the other bandmates? Shame, as they're a good band. Hook will do/be shit w/o them.
dave.jay1@ntlworld.com June 19, 2009, 11:57 AM Sounds a great idea that, to form a Brand new band, and then Re-record OLD Tracks from your OLD bands... ...
I met Hooky once, and he was a really nice fella ( I even seen his Willy, as he was having a Wee next to me in "Eric's" club, Liverpool...Well, You Do Lads....Don't Ya ??!!!).
Joy Division were simply STUNNING Live that night....but I could never get "Into" their Albums.........
Shipwrecked Escapologist June 19, 2009, 12:03 PM I have to say that after Technique I lost interest and not heard anthing worth listening to from them since. Loved the Joy Division set at the Manchester versus Cancer gig.
One of your children June 20, 2009, 01:32 PM sounds like electronic!
Jukebox jury yep :)
9 x Fined June 20, 2009, 03:09 PM I love Barney but that song is truly awful.

I love this. It's from one of Hookies 'DJ' sets in where he played a mixed CD for an hour. Look at him tweak that high end!

I saw New Order @ Brixton in 2004 & 2006 and they were tired.
As much as I Love Joy Division & New Order, maybe now is the time to put the whole thing to rest, eh?
Hows about it lads? Just let it go. The Joy Division legacy has been milked to death.
The_Draize_Train July 3, 2009, 08:35 PM Peter Hook is one of my favorite bass players, what I like about his playing style is that there is a pattern in his seemingly non-pattern way of playing. See Joy Division's "the only mistake"
Ryan. July 6, 2009, 09:11 AM NEW ORDER’S BERNARD SUMNER ANNOUNCES NEW PROJECT
Bad Lieutenant formed in 2007 with New Order’s Bernard Sumner (guitar and vocals) alongside Phil Cunningham (guitar) and Jake Evans (guitar and vocals). We can now confirm that they have completed their long awaited debut LP “Never Cry Another Tear” which is set for worldwide release on 5th October 2009 on Triple Echo Records. The album features sounds that have helped make New Order such a treasured, innovative force over the past three decades, but also featured is a brand new voice from exotic Macclesfield, Jake Evans.
The new album centre’s around crisp, streamlined, 21st century guitar music – underscored by keyboards and occasional melodica. The record includes Sumner’s seemingly effortless melodic invention, but now these familiar joys blend with vocals and the talented guitar work of Jake Evans.
“This album is very important to me,” says Bernard. “We’ve worked hard on it and I’m proud of it. It’s also important because it gives people the chance to hear a gifted new singer and guitar player who I think’s really talented.”
Together, the band have spent over a year writing, recording and mixing the album near Manchester, which features additional musicians including Alex James (Blur) and Stephen Morris (New Order and Joy Division) on several recordings. Song titles and live dates will be announced in due course. The live band will include Stephen Morris on drums and Tom Chapman on bass.
A debut single, “Sink or Swim” is expected to be released prior to the LP, on Monday 21st September 2009.
“There is some continuity to the music I’ve made in the past,” says Bernard. “But this is very different – because different people are playing on it. This is just how I now want to make music – it feels right to me and I hope at least a few other people feel the same.”

marred July 6, 2009, 02:01 PM I like this song "Sink or Swim". Looking forward to hearing the original version. I really like Bernard's voice and It stiill sounds as fresh as it did when he was a kid. Go Bernie! I loved Electronic and could never understand why people bagged them so much but you know what they say "You can't please anyone." :D
